I'm Brazilian and I've been following your channel for a while. I was happy to see your reaction to the sound of "Sepultura" (its pronunciation is correct), undoubtedly the best known band in my country. About the martial art shown in the video, it is called "Capoeira". An interesting fact is that such a style of struggle was created by black slaves to defend themselves against abuse. That's why it's like a dance. To disguise the practice before the slave-owning lords of the time. Anyway, congratulations for another fun and interesting video. Greetings from Brazil. I hope to meet you in my country one day (sorry for the lousy English). From your fan, Tiago
Hi Alex, meaning of the song in Max Cavalera’s own words; “It's about belief in yourself. Powerful but simple lyrics. Just being down with your own roots and belief in your roots." First Sepultura smashed the boundaries between punk and thrash. Then they invented a whole new genre with the Roots album, and it changed metal forever. They wanted to go deep into Brazilian culture on this album, so they went into the Rainforests and hung out tribes, even recorded with them. It gave the whole album such a unique sound.
I am brazilian from Rio de Janeiro and i love very much Sepultura. I saw all concerts in last 22 years in Rio de Janeiro (and one em São Paulo). Great band. Pride of Brazil.
That Brazilian ju-jitsu you speak of is called 'Capoeira' I guess the significance of it in this song 'Roots bloody roots' can be directly linked to when slaves were transported from Africa to South America, during the middle passage. Capoeira was used by the people as a weapon against there oppressors; disguised as a dance, as it was illegal in the 16th Century for a slave to learn self defense or fighting skills. I guess this song in more ways than one is a cathartic exercise for them recognizing the negative effects of the history using the symbolism of Capoeira in it's religious or spiritualist context by summoning up the strength of there ancestors and fighting the powers that be.
The roots they are talking about are slavery, catholicism... I mean, man, it was all there in the imagery used in the video! From Wikipedia: "The music video was directed by Thomas Mignone and won the Kerrang "Video Of The Year Award" in 1996, as well as a nomination for the MTV Brazil "Best Rock Video" Award. Filming was done in the catacombs underneath the city of Salvador, where the Brazilian slaves were sold. The video is distinguished from other heavy metal imagery by its atypical use of the natural beauty of Brazil, including its traditional capoeira fight, Timbalada percussionists, and Afro-Brazilians people, as well as the reference to the religion of Candomblé. The video also shows scenes of Catholic churches." That mixture of african slaves, european conquistadors, native brazilians, their different religions, all the suffering brought by the church and the europeans, all of those are the bloody roots, most of it nearly invisible to many people nowadays.
Decent song, but they have MUCH better songs (Inner Self, Chaos A.D., Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells to name a few.) Anyway, Decapitated: Spheres of Madness, Fleshgod Apocalypse: The Violation.
Nolan Void You’re on point. There are so much better songs from sepultura than this one that actually defined the band, and they have quite a different musicality from this one.

excellent choice to hear with the video ...Cuz it show some very important aspects of a part of Brazilian culture... even though the music refers mostly to the natives ( the indigenous people), can easily relate to the slaves brought from Africa.... and the video, to be easier to make was filmed at the most, "African dependent" part is Brazil, the state of Bahia, that created a lot of the mixed cultural aspects of modern Brazil, like religions( the guys with big buffing skirts, straws and cloths on the head, dancing, who are deities of a african-brazilian religion), dances, music, and ...fights .... very nice music from a great band with a hell of a video .......

My favourite band! This song talks about never forgetting who we are and where we came from. That our roots are our basis as a character. The clip was recorded in Salvador, Bahia (BR). It shows a little of our Brazilian culture. It shows the capoeira (only truly brazilian martial art), street sambeiras, a olodum group and other things. Now watch Sepultura's Territory or Convicted In Life!
You should check out the Chaos A.D. album that came before this. It was the first album where they were exploring adding world music elements; before that they had just been a pretty straight death metal band. On Chaos A.D. the rhythm went from that standard death metal sound to a more groove-oriented world sound that meshed with the metal really well. On Roots they really took the fusion to a new level, but its cool to hear the beginning stages of it on Chaos A..D.
Damn, never heard this song before but holy hardcoreness lol awesome beat, & the riffs are sick as hell. I love your channel because I like a lot of metal, but you still introduce me to some new music as well. Rock on dude 😎🤘🏽 awesome!
The old Sepultura songs are great, and Max and Igor Cavalera, the founding members ( vocals and drums respectively) did a tour last year called 'Max and Igor Cavalera return to Roots', where they played the entire album Roots. I saw them 3 times with that show. But ever since Igor left the band, none of the original members remain and they kind of suck now.
Wintersun -Loneliness(winter) Wintersun is a incredibly underrated band. World class musicians. They are amazing try them out Alex i see alot of people recommending it here one particular song of them /Sons of winter and stars. Which i also don't mind you trying!
Would recommend Loneliness after learning about songs that show off their capabilities and the usual style more, so you get to appreciate the range of their music (Jari is a damn amazing composer and musician, not to mention the musicianship of the rest of the band). But other than that, I would agree with you. Amazing band that is totally deserving of more attention than what they are getting. Also am a bit jealous about NA fans, who get to see them and Ne Obliviscaris on their current tour. :D
I’ve met Max 3 years ago preforming at a local bar in Houston as Calvalara Conspiracy, Max is a beast, they also came as Soulfly this year to Houston with Nile. Listen to We Sold Our Souls To Metal, i think you’ll like it.
Brings me back to high school and having a couple foreign exchange students from Brazil at my school and rocking out to Seplutara. Those where the good days.
This song is about the Brazilian culture. It was built over a pile of African blood shed by the Portuguese, which I guess is why it's a "bloody root". HOWEVER, because of all the different European, African and Native American cultures that generated the Brazilian culture, it has developed into something unique: "We're growing every day / Getting stronger in every way". The song is about not throwing our culture away trying to fit in an "American/European Way of Life", including the religious pressure to convert people from African religions to Christianity "I pray / We don't need to change / Our ways to be saved". You can hear this in the heavy use of percussions that are typically from the Brazilian Northeast, which the drummer makes huge use of during this and other songs. It's like they're saying "We're a heavy metal band, but we can develop Brazilian-sounding metal". The clip is made in Salvador, which was our first capital and it is probably the biggest hub for African-Brazilian culture. From the Capoeira to the Olodum (the percussionists) and the traditional dances, they tried to expose as much of what can be seen of the roots of our country.
Yes, they are from Brasil. I saw them at a free concert on the beach in Rio de Janeiro in 1991! At that time & for many years, the could sing in English but didn't speak a word of English. It is called Capoeada.
This video was filmed on Salvador/Bahia, in Brazil! My brother was there closed on footages and told me than saw Sepultura right there, i say: "What?... It's awesome, man!" I'll never forget it!
Yo! That is still not Eluveitie - Rebirth man! I guess I'll have to rewrite it again and again and again 😂 Eluveitie - Rebirth Eluveitie - Rebirth Eluveitie - Rebirth Eluveitie - Rebirth Eluveitie - Rebirth 😈😈😈

I saw these guys live about 12 or 15 years ago (not long after their new vocalist had joined the band) and they were absolutely superb - tight, brutal and professional.
The fight style you see during the video clip is not Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s an Afro-Brazilian dance form of martial art called Capoeira and includes elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality!!!
Sepultura started as a Death metal/death thrash band in the early 80s and in 1989 their "beneath the remains" turned into their signiture thrash style. This album "Roots" was the Last album with Vocalist/Guitarist Max Cavalera. This album was also a stylistic shift from the Thrash metal of the 80s and early 90s. They went from E standard tuning to Drop B tuning.

That's the best part about being a hefnerd ;) \m/
Anubhav hell yeah! lol
If you liked Sepultura, try Territory or Refuse/Resist. They're really great songs
Check out chaos AD and Roots for their best work, Derek Green sucks!
In flames - moonshield
Yes!!!
Finally, someone recommending the good shit from them! Old In Flames ftw!
YES! Or the "medium" period, like Cloud Connected
Sepultura a melhor banda do mundo.
Great band. Please, Epica - Consign to Oblivion, live at Zenith!
SEPULTURA DO BRASIL !!!!!
You should react to Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells.
Classic
Yes oh yes ☺️
Wintersun -Loneliness(winter)
Wintersun is a incredibly underrated band.
Alex u seem so damn cool totally like someone I would hang with . Keep up the reaction positive vibes and being you . Your awesome brother
Finally a Brazilian band 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
If you want more different metal get on some Finntroll with the quickness. Trollhammaren would be the obvious first song from the IMHO for you Alex.
Yessss!!!
Yes. This.
From fintroll i like under bergets rot
Yes, they are from Brasil. I saw them at a free concert on the beach in Rio de Janeiro in 1991! At that time & for many years, the could sing in English but didn't speak a word of English. It is called Capoeada.

Hey, Do Eluveitie!!!!
'Ratos de porão' - thats the brasilian band you should react to
I saw them in concert in the 90s. They are one of my favorite metal bands.
The song Bloody Roots is about the roots of (Brazil) and a bunch of other countries that was builded over the blood and sweat of black and indigenous people, this video has tons historical references, pure art.
Alex I hope you know that we re all waiting for Maximum The Hormone right?
Thank you for finally reacting to this!!!
'Christian Woman' by Type O Negative ... so dope!
daga_kk Excellent choice! I'm even more 'hooked' on 'Everything Dies'! Great song & video for Alex's first time with TON, yes? Stay Negative Friend!
Stay Negative! He should try 'Black No.1' also... And btw. he reacted to 'Love You to Death' like 4 weeks ago.
That's right! Thank you for the reminder! I also DID maybe, once, play Christian Woman for my ..um icky Mom? She was not as amused as I was! Rock on!
Type O Negative is one of my favorite bands!!!!!! I love Wolf Moon, Love you to Death, Black No. One, Green man, Red Water, My girlfriends girlfriend, bloody kisses, their cover of Paranoid, Everything dies, Christian Women, and September Sun
Fear Factory! - Shock or Regenerate
Dielectric 😎
I saw these guys live about 12 or 15 years ago (not long after their new vocalist had joined the band) and they were absolutely superb - tight, brutal and professional.
Dream theater- as I am 🔥🔥

U know it !!
Man, he cant do a dream theater video...even a 2 hour live wont be enough to listen a single complete song hahaja just kiddin XD
Ne Obliviscaris-Intra Venus 🤘
The fight style you see during the video clip is not Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s an Afro-Brazilian dance form of martial art called Capoeira and includes elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality!!!
3:21 It´s called CAPOEIRA Alex lol
Nice to see you reacting to a brazilian band
You should react to hatebreed destroy everything
SKULLFACE 99 Yeaa!! I’ve been requesting “I will be Heard” for weeks now
My Fav.... Doomsayer or Call for Blood :D
YES!
worst>>>>>>>>>>>>>>hatebreed
SKULLFACE 99 the only proper way to react to hatebreed is to eject the cd and throw it straight into the fucking trash.
React to those bands:
