We are getting all of ours in this week...red kidney, yellow eyed, black beans. Just picked yellow waxed and a green bush bean as well. We didn't think our heirloom green beans were going to do anything...but they finally did...lol

We plant beans and peas, not every year but often enough. I find the seeds keep a long time too. We grow white beans, pintos, purple hull, black eyed, crowder and cow peas. (The hubs loves peas) The deer like the peas we find, but we plant extra for that reason. Have a great fall weekend!

Considering that the dried beans approximately triple in volume once cooked that's a lot of free healthy plant protein for your efforts.

another option instead of dehydrator is to pull the plants, tie upside down until dry or spread plants out on a tarp in a sheltered area (such as garage/shed/porch) in a single layer (so they don't mold/rot).... looking forward to your chicken feed growing experiment, am hoping to try growing buckwheat, millet, oats, field peas to supplement chicken feed if prices skyrocket or feed is hard to find....a rule of thumb i heard is that if you can grow regular green beans in your area, you can grown dry beans..

I don't know if it's true of not but I heard somewhere that once you vac a seed it won't sprout.

I love dried beans and if I could that’s one of the main garden plants I’d grow. I love yellow beans so sweet and they hold their shape well. You must make another canning beans video for us. Thank you Rene

I didn't get much cannellinis - especially since I didn't stake them. I should have. The Good Mother Stallard were awesome, as were the Tarbais beans! The borlottie were quite productive for as few as I planted. Looking forward to planting cannelinis again next year and this time, stake them so they don't mold.

I have come to the conclusion after observing them, that even bush-type beans will benefit from some support. I want to add a lot more trellises to the garden next year.

I grow tons of dried beans . It takes me days to shell them all. So easy to can . Get some black turtle ( spicy black beans sooooo good ) beans are cheap yes , but mine are free and organic . I haven't purchased seeds for years. replant and can the rest. I like the light red kidney too. They make great refried for burritos . I take the plants that haven't quite dried and just hang them in the shed. They dry in a week or so. If you have a PO Renee I can send you some fun ones to try. Pole and bush. I even grow beans that I never eat Scarlet runner have beautiful purple seeds and I have a emerald green variety ( I don't remember the name ) I just keep them in jars and stare at them . lol. You can leave your green beans to mature and dry. never have to buy those again either. This year I went crazy seed saving . Afraid there will be shortages next year.

Scarlet runners are commonly grown here (NZ) as a whole green cooked bean. Delicious. Pretty plant.
Eat the whole thing raw, from the plant too.

I love dry beans and I can get kinda evangelical about them! I grow about six different kinds and they are great sources of plant based protein and fiber. Plus they add nitrogen to your soil. They've got great self life and also provide a lot of entertainment value if your family is anything like mine. Hey, farts are funny!

Hahaha -- maybe next year. I've heard you can use dry green bean seed like northern beans so I'm saving all of mine beyond next year's seed and seeing if that's true.
