Traditional percussionist. Hellhammer has style and charisma. Technical drumming using simplicity. This is where the real skills shine. Anyone can blast now adays. Its in proper technique, skill and command. Jan has full mastery of his field. Period.
Daniel Ness Agreed on that, it was killer. But the Drama between maniac and blasphemer was in all the talks. And maniac getting worse and worse during live shows. But great album. I love TELOCH and CHARLES but sometimes wish BLASPHEMER was still about
Too bad black metal isn't about complexity but the atmosphere. That's also why their, for example "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is thousand miles ahead of anything they've released afterwards.
+Christian Black metal was about innovation, not necessarily atmosphere. they were tired of trendy death metal. Mayhem kept inventing. Esoteric Warfare is an impressive album, it's easy to enjoy that album next to deathcrush. They're both unique.
Anyone who should ever question the validity, importance, influence or creativity of this man's drumming would most certainly be silenced and rendered slack-jawed watching this awesome display.
What I admire the most about Jan Axel is the understanding of simplicity that he has.The most difficult simplicity which is hidden in jazz.He has projected it into his fills and improvisational skills, and then he energize it up to something which fits in any genre of progressive metal/trash metal/death/black metal. So inspiring! Thanks, hilsen en fan.
I agree . Not stereotypical metal drumming style .. but still very metal ! At times my band unintentionally sounds like mayhem as my drums style is similar yet not as advanced . Hellhammer is awesome
@@6sic666666 : Honestly I can't stand Frost's drumming, 90% of the time he is so damn boring and oversimplified. (Speed doesn't matter in this regard).
@@6sic666666 Frost is very different though, much more straight forward and physical. Nick Barker on the other hand is very similar to HH. Both love to follow the riffs and the music, adding all those super cool fills with great use of the cymbals.
It's amazing to see how he developed his drummimg style, from a traditional way (being one of the pioneers of Black Metal drums) to a more avant-gardish style that for sure influenced modern Black Metal.
He has such a light precise touch. Totally relaxed. I can't stand the the way he uses trigger samples so often but he's one of the best metal drummers out there.
Wow, he's such a pro that he even looks bored as he's playin, what a talent. I sure hope he stays with mayhem & that he doesn't venture off & decide to commit to other projects etc because if mayhem lost him they'd never be the same, ever.
Actually he's still involved in a lot of different projects, many great bands and not black metal, and these days even a bit less than he used to. But make no mistake about it, no Hellhammer no Mayhem, the band wouldn't exist without him at this point.
He play with new rocks, Gene hogland play with DM's and weights. Im a drummer myself and HH is my number one influence, the first time i saw him play in NR i promised myself i would do the same, and since 2011 i have been playing with them as well and i promise to you is such a stamina and resistence builder, not to stay it builds your speed.
+Tim Brown Actually once you got used to them, boots help you a lot stabilizing your ankle and adding some power to the strokes which is very helpful when you play a direct drive foot pedal like the axis. But also with chain driven pedals it's useful to have a shoe that supports your ankle one way or another.
I've been playing Axis for close to 30 years. I was the first guy on the East coast to get the Longboards when they were released. I have a hard enough time finding tennis shoes (I wear a size 15.) I saw HH on this last tour and I was surprised that he wasn't triggering.
You can tell he wants to take off it’s hard when you have a slow song and then a fast song your body is all wound up you have to slow down your heartbeat and take a breath!!!!! JAN RULES!!!!!

Chimera is one my favorite metal albums ever
It is the most underrated thing Mayhem has released

Favourite Mayhem for sure!
The Maniac and Blasphemer era, Mayhem at their best!
@@danielness2847 Underrated by people who are unable to understand that a good band will never record the same stuff twice.
This makes you think how complex Mayhems music is compared to other bands of the same genre. Atleast in the drums department.

Eirik Hestastein another drummer who is more traditionally jazz oriented and well skilled is proscriptor of Absu. Excellent percussionist.

Also Nick Barker too. Or frost from satyricon. But hellhammer is king. His projects from arcturus to age of silence is insane!

A complete drummer, must be fun to have such freedom behind the kit.Inspiring, not demotivating:)
Never heard anything like this, this is a New Breed of drumming,Unbelievable technique
necrojazz
Hellhammer has been 1 of the best (if not the best) drummers since 1997.
What A Masterpiece Ov Drums!!!
MayheM's sound is the best in bringing hell to earth
So much accuracy in his playing! Damn!
He plays with a finesse like he's painting the notes on the drum set
One of the absolute masters
This is some fabulous stuff.. I'm always like: "Oh man".. Necro-Jazzing that shit at the ultimate level
He has one of the weirdest drum set ups i have ever seen and boy does he know how to play the shit out of it!
The best guys make it look easy..
I can do that. Hold my beer.
WHOA!!!!! Beautiful drum section!!!!!
So much to play with like a drummer in a candy store 😜🤘🏻🤘🏻🥁
The reverse fill at 2:41 is absolutely insane
he has some really interesting fills !

Amazing unconventional drummer

I can do it too- hold my vodka...:)
Totally not in to blackmetal, don't like the culture around it or the sound..
But watching this guy drum is pretty damn cool.
It's called steel toe double bass
“They have some more demands.”
but my wallet fucking hate them!!!
Look hellhammer on the Immortal Videos Blashyrk mighty Ravendark and Grim and Frostbiten Kingdom 2Songs on VHS
Just an amazing drummer..but look at this..who can drum like this?
He's the best of the best in his area
Seems odd to label him the ‘’best’’. Why is DsO’s drummer always left out of the conversation; surely he’s at this sort of level too?

They're playing it really fast. I also notice he doesn't do the blast beats in the 1:49 part anymore, like in the album.
In this song, there are no blast beats on the album version. Here he played exactly the same just like in the album.
No blast beats in that part of My Death, what he does on the record is just doubling Blasphemer's fast picked riff with double bass.
change the snare please ,anything higher than 10bucks and new one should do.
Sounds great wym

To me, he is the best technical Drummer of all Time! He unites speed with precision in very complex patterns! He is just awesome!

Is he doing this with combat boots on?? Good lord
Truly a legend. I mostly admire his work on Arcturus and Covenant, but all of his stuff is awesome AF
Probably the only trommer who uses everything 🤟🏿
