The 909 sounds used in combination with the Jomox MBase were great, as well as the same for the 808 sounds in the "Electronic" card. One cool trick is that you can use pitch bend on all of the drum sounds to create "Drum and Bass" loops just using an external sequncer. Bravo, and enjoyed the demo at the end for sure. Was that "Jazz Brush?" Bravo and Danke!
It just blows my mind how efficiently you set-up, link, use and record with all these different tools most people find bad and make enjoyable music every time... I've had my own current set-up for a few months and don't even have it up and running hahaha
I bought R-8M after watching this video! Fortunately, I was able to purchase the ROM cards "DANCE (909)" and "Electric (808)" for about $80 each! It sounded really great! I would like to thank AudioPilz for introducing me to this machine.
For 1990, having a drum module with 8 outs and a TON of sound options (with 3 expansion slots) was awesome. This was long before the term DAW was a thing. Having 8 simultaneous outputs for drums saved 8 tracks of tape when recording and sync'ing your drum machine to something like an 8 track reel to reel (6 tracks, plus FSK/timecode and a guard track). I have owned one since forever. Originally bought to go with a Pad 80. Also owned a Yamaha RM50. Still use the R8M for latin percussion via stereo out. You can easily spend more on the Electronic card than the machine itself.
@@AudioPilz . I've never bothered with the cards. They don't really do much that you can't achieve yourself with some braincurdling menu-diving. The sonic capabilities are well stashed away, which was standard midi rack practice back then. As a percussion module, it's more than adequate.

That's actually a long-running urban myth. The timing cannot be used as a modulation destination, neither on the R8 nor on the R8m. It was possible to do it manually though on the R8's sequencer by changing the timing ever so slightly using the data slider.
I bought one off of ebay about a decade ago and at the time, the SN-R8-10 (Dance) card, I believe, was the rarest and most expensive card! If I remember correctly, it cost almost as much as the unit itself!! It was so hard to find! The others seemed more common. I also have a RAM card, the 4 (Electronic) and the 9 (Power Drums USA). And I remember when I first got the dance card, I couldn't access it and I forget how I was able to use it finally. Though I loved this machine, I think my favorite drum machine though was the Kawai R50e.
The phrase "multi-terrabyte sample landfills" clinched this video for me! Sums up modern sample packs perfectly, a LOT of shitty samples, in a glossy package, only good for the bin. Great video as always!

The R8 is as distinctive sounding a the X0X, imho. Cool to see you tearing up a piece of gear I actually owned!
I have not one but two R8-M modules (I was using each of them in two separate midi setups a while ago). Anyhow, I have two "Electronic" cards with the 808 sounds, one for each R8-M unit, and I have one "°Dance" card and one "Dry" card. The 808 sounds are very good and the 808 bassdrum kicks butt. The 909 bassdrum on the "Dance" card kicks butt too. These cards were a bit on the expensive side when I bought them years ago and they are even more expensive today. Based on the quality of the sounds, it's understandable why they cost so much. I'm never selling mine. BTW, I had an R8mkII before I bought the modules. The drum machine did not work well as a midi sound module (sloppy timing) so I sold it after buying the R8-M. The module also has other additional features not found in the R8 drum machine such as the ability to actually create and save kits or "Patches," as well as the ability to respond to midi pitchbend in realtime and allow you to set the pitchbend range!!!!! The Roland R8-M is definitely not what I would consider "Bad Gear" by any means. This is definitely pro-level equipment as well as a secret weapon used by many in pro studios over the years. BTW, nice 808 track demo in your video.
Yeah, nowhere near bad gear for the R8m. Way better than the Yamaha RX15 I had back in the day. Today I have this module, the Electronic, Dry, and Dance cards. IIRC the module also had a card built in that the "normal" R8 didn't have. Oh, and I have the Yamaha RM50, The Alesis DM Pro and D4 for dedicated beats type sounds. Maybe someday I'll buy another Yamaha RX, but for now it's covered. And yeah, every 90s ROMPler had some drums, except maybe for the dreaded Emu Classic Keys. Pro Tip: Run the snare through an exciter - it's.. um... exciting. (You saw that coming, didn't you? I know you did.)
I had the R8's smaller brother, the R5. It was great for pounding, stadium rock style drum tracks but without the need for a drummer and hours of tedium at rehearsals while said drummer set enormous kit up.
@@AudioPilz Mostly recording each drum separately for total isolation in the 80s. Using samples in commercial rock stuff really took off on the early to mid 90s. Fun fact, Nirvana's "Nevermind" was lauded by critics for an apparent return to raw recordings, but was actually massively produced with most of Dave Grohl's drum parts overdubbed with triggered samples.
For years the Roland R8MK2 was my drum machine. i couldn't afford a mighty Akai MPC3000 that everyone else was using and i got made fun of at a studio once(i remember those things!!! Lol) . later i got a MPC2000xl and today i have MPC Live. and as dated as the sound i use many samples for the R8. some of them are pretty cool i think.
Always nice to see an A&H Zed mixer, was my very first :' ). Few years later and now I have a mammoth 32 channel GL2200 and a room full of quirky synths, it's been a fun journey.
Once again, amazing video. I've been all over the R8 over the years, along with every other dinosaur-drum unit, but.. None of them have anything on the Yamaha RX5, the IDM/glitch-beast from hell. Thanks for uploading.
@@emmarossignol4445 .. I was mostly in love with the sound design options, although I liked the sequencer as well. In fact, all the retro-crap drum machines had some redeeming quality, in my opinion -some inflection or some flavor, for lack of a better definition- which I find appealing. Now, with the recent popularity of synth/retro music, the terrible drum units are getting expensive, lol.
Wow! That last 90's tune with the terrible (brilliant) video was the closest to a time machine to the 90's we will ever get, I know, I was a teenager in the 90's...
I had a the massive Akai ASQ10 sequencer (MPC60 minus the sampling) so didn't need additional sequencing... and then Roland released the R8m - brilliant sounds and easy programming in a 1u module. Add some extra cards & you're off to the races! Perfect. I still use my original new one & even added a second. Brilliant once you get in to it... and did i say so damned easy to edit?

Thanks! A lot of reasons to keep the R8m busy!
Cool, I have the exact same cards here!
I had the R8's smaller brother, the R5. It was great for pounding, stadium rock style drum tracks but without the need for a drummer and hours of tedium at rehearsals while said drummer set enormous kit up.
I assume they ALL used drum machines instead of real drummers ;)
@@AudioPilz Mostly recording each drum separately for total isolation in the 80s. Using samples in commercial rock stuff really took off on the early to mid 90s. Fun fact, Nirvana's "Nevermind" was lauded by critics for an apparent return to raw recordings, but was actually massively produced with most of Dave Grohl's drum parts overdubbed with triggered samples.
It's a brave man that throws in a shakuhachi sample ;-)
Those who dare...;)
That snare in your intro sing is explosive :)
Pure dynamite!
The R8 is Aphex Twin's 808 on SAW85-92, go buy these !
Good to know!
was about to post the same thing!
no, the Electronic card that sells for like 100$ is Aphex Twin's 808 on the R8
OK, OK, OK, I admit it. I've become a collector of drum machines. Cheap? Makes drum sounds? It's on my list.
I feel the same way!
The zoom in at 3:17 was legendary.
EPIC!
I love the drum jam out at the very end! This thing sounds amazing.
Consider the Alesis Airsynth - just try to get a useable sound for the intro from that pseudo-theremin tchotchke. I dare you.
I would have to make an intro about failing to do this ;)
I had never touched the R8M Module version, but i have the R8 drummachine still at my studio and i love it
R8 is a total classic. It has the feel;)
The OG R8 is legend!
Always nice to see an A&H Zed mixer, was my very first :' ). Few years later and now I have a mammoth 32 channel GL2200 and a room full of quirky synths, it's been a fun journey.
Love them A&H
Wow that Drawn Together reference.
Dumpy the Wasteman!!!
Once again, amazing video. I've been all over the R8 over the years, along with every other dinosaur-drum unit, but.. None of them have anything on the Yamaha RX5, the IDM/glitch-beast from hell. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks!
Do you think the RX5 has a better sequencer? I love how my RX5 sounds but I always wonder if I would have a nicer time with the R8.
4:52 Theme song for hip cop drama. Love it!
Yeah, stoner cops!
Please tell me you're making an album soon! I'd buy it in a heartbeat! your beats are insane dude!
Thank you so much. Working on it!
Love the snare
Weapon grade snare drum
By now you should understand that I love your videos my dude
I highly appreciate it!
Annnnnnnddddddddddddddddd
*My Friday just got better*
Thank god it's friday!
@@AudioPilz Its Saturday but Australia forgives you
@@AudioPilz so when travel restrictions lift you'll come to the states and do a show right?
I'll bring the 🍄🍄🍄
The video w the neon dolphins on reverse and the lions making sexx was a true masterpiece
Thank you so much!!!
Not bad gear, R8 is a Classic.
Why not both;)
Wow! That last 90's tune with the terrible (brilliant) video was the closest to a time machine to the 90's we will ever get, I know, I was a teenager in the 90's...
Oh, a fellow 90s youth. Thanks!
I loved the original R-8 for the sounds (at the time, 1991-ish). But those hard plastic pads - ugh - they were painful misery. Barely playable.
They seem to be an acquired taste
I didn’t know I needed one of these until that jam at 4:51 came on. Wow 🤩
It has quite some classic sounds on it!
The R-8M is good gear. The Korg DRM-1 is bad gear. Good luck finding one with the remote.
True, that's quite a challenge...
@@AudioPilz I actually like the sounds but the reliance of a remote for editing puts it in the "bad gear" column.
man i love the background song that plays for the first two minutes. Sound like some cool game music
The jazz factor is high on this one...
OK, I've never been a Roland guy but I've never even heard about this thing.
It was new to me, as well (although it is quite a classic)
The Roland R8 is a classic
I had a the massive Akai ASQ10 sequencer (MPC60 minus the sampling) so didn't need additional sequencing... and then Roland released the R8m - brilliant sounds and easy programming in a 1u module. Add some extra cards & you're off to the races! Perfect. I still use my original new one & even added a second. Brilliant once you get in to it... and did i say so damned easy to edit?
Never been a Roland guy...? You must have been born in the last 20 years where they just did all the wrong things
8:01? awww that sweet, sweet ad revenue ;)
great content, great humor, keep it up
Oh, you noticed;) Thank you so much!
