  • @randomdevices

    This was my first piece of MIDI gear, bought from Musician's Friend at over 75% off list price in 1993. I put in a lot of time with that manual - Korg should have offered a certificate program to those who managed to decently operate the S3. The main reason I haven't let go of it today is because of all the time I've spent learning it.

    • @AudioPilz
      @AudioPilz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I pulled the S3 out recently and I would certainly fail the certificate test;)

    Since I watched my first video in this series, I knew the day would come that you would be reviewing this unit. As a previous owner, I can attest to the cryptic operating system and serious menu-diving required to operate this unit. However, I was extremely fortunate to have owned the Alexander Press "Learn It Right The First Time" manual for the S3. What a difference for understanding how to operate this beast! While it was lacking in storage space, the Alesis Data Disc solved this admirably. I miss it terribly. Never should have sold it. Thanks for such an interesting channel!

      I had to like and reply because I have the exact same set up. The book, S3, Alesis data disc. Also both the Instrument and Dance expansion ROM/RAM and a couple RAM cards for storage before I got the Data disk. It was my 1st drum machine ...I didn't know any better! One feature that was barely mentioned is the SMPTE time code generator. I used to stripe tape with a Tascam Portastudio 4 track cassette and was also using a Roland rack mount Guitar Synth (RA-100 I think?) for external sequencing. It was a total pain in the ass but it worked. Another note worthy S3 feature is the ability to disarm the 4 pattern tracks and use as a stand alone 8 track sequencer. That and the 6 audio outputs, the time code and 2 midi outs made it a pretty serious piece of gear at the time. It may have been late to the party as a drum machine, but it does have some pretty unique features and depth of editing available. Like a previous comment, I purchased the S3 brand new just above cost when they were being discontinued. Years later a friend loaned me an Alesis SR-16 and I met my first "friendly" drum machine. The S3 basically has no preset patterns, it was all about programming it. I bring it out every once and a while and the sounds are still very usable. In a sense I am proud to know the S3 is considered BAD GEAR because I made it work at the time!

  • @lundsweden
    @lundsweden 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The Korg S3, never heard of it despite being deep into music tech since the 80s.
    I remember around this time the fashion was to buy a workstation keyboard and either use the internal sequencer or an external computer based one.
    This was the original "in the box" concept, so drum machines were considered passe back then.
    Only really excellent machines such as the Roland R5, R8 and R70 could compete in this hostile late 80s/early 90s anti drum machine environment 🥁

    I bought the Korg S3 because of the realistic drum sounds and SMPTE in 1991 and use it up to today. Specially the brush kits are great with sweeping !! Using the SMPTE and a Tascam Porta 4 track we could add a bass guitar to the drums, which we used to perform live. But this is a loooong time agoo....

    1. That beat LED might blink so short that it might be shorter than your camera's frame time -- and so not get captured every time.
    2. If you plan on keeping that S3, find somebody who does electronics repair; 1990s gear is plagued by bad quality electrolytic capacitors that leak and destroy gear. Weird hum and noise issues are typical symptoms of caps in the output amp giving out.

      @ZetaCarinae I find for individual sounds that simpler is adequate. My Waldorf Attack has ADR and a ‘shape’ stage. Since sounds tend to be short and quick, all you really need is that variation in the attack vs sustain.
      Now if you want ‘one finger jams’ or short perc loops .... 8 stages is cool.
      Of course in a DAW any knob movement can be automated, or in hardware anything can be MIDI controlled.

    It sounds interresting. I presume this an subset of the M1 repackaged in the for of a groove box. It certainly has the looks of the M1. Ironically enough a lot of M1 users used the 909 for their drum sounds. I didn't even know this thing existed. I have heard of the X3, with it's cool demo-cd!

    These were either 599 or 699 UKP when they came out. If I'd paid that for mine I'd have probably wanted Korg's design team at the time rounded up and imprisoned. Some years after they got discontinued I saw one for sale in the local free ads paper (that shows my age huh) for 50UKP, and was curious enough to buy it. I met the seller guy at a petrol filling station about 5 miles away, and since my car was busted at the time, I went to pick it up on my bicycle. Lucky it didn't start raining on the way back
    As mentioned in the video, the UI is appalling. If you don't use the thing for a week or two the method of using it just slips from your mind and you have to plough through the manual again. It's not as bad as the Roland D110 or the Yamaha TX16w original os (shudder) but still...
    Also alluded to in the video, there is nowhere near enough internal pattern/song memory. If you can get more than three songs programmed into it, you're doing well. If that wasn't enough, if you fill the memory up and try to save everything onto a RAM card, then it won't fit! You need to use no more than something like 7/8 of the internal memory and then save it. It won't play back patterns and songs direct from the memory card (like you can on e.g. a Roland TR707) either.
    Another problem with the thing is that there isn't enough polyphony. If you record a pattern featuring something really obscure like a 8th note ride cymbal, then it pretty soon starts robbing layers from the snare drum, which sounds terrible.
    It's frustrating because the basic concept is good and the method of creating drum sounds by layering a strike sample and a shell sample is great and I think unique to this machine. I wish they'd released the S1.

    This was the drum box I waited and waited to be released because I heard you could edit the hell out of the samples. During the wait Roland released the R8m, which was perfect for me, and I jumped on it. No regrets, as the S3 got a lousy review in Keyboard mag. I also have the Kawai XD-5, which allows synth-style editing (2 ADSR's, 2 filter's, ringmod) of drums and other waveforms to make some crazy sounds. I think it also was a market failure. They're not expensive and worth checking out.
