No, Really, You Need to Visit West Virginia

This video is about visiting West Virginia. West Virginia is home of the Allegheny Mountains. The Allegheny Mountains are a part of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The Alleghenies run for about 400 miles (640 km) from north-central Pennsylvania, through western Maryland and eastern West Virginia, to southwestern Virginia. They comprise the rugged western-central portion of the Appalachians. In this video we spend a lot of time in or near Monongahela National Forest. Established in 1920, Monongahela National Forest provides visitors with scenic vistas, country roads, flowing streams and abundant plant and animal life. It's one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the United States. It protects over 921,000 acres! It's huge! And it's one of the most remote places in our part of the world, and it's the most remote region east of the Mississippi.Elevations range from just under 1,000 feet to 4,863 feet above sea. One of the most amazing features in the region are the unique valleys. Much of the Monongahela (West Virginia), George Washington (West Virginia, Virginia) and Jefferson (Virginia) National Forests lie within the Allegheny. Mountains. This video is also about visiting West Virginia, and really thinking that people are really missing out by not exploring West Virginia. There is a problem, however, in this video. There are scenes that are not actually in West Virginia, but actually in Virginia. I'm going to talk about this in an upcoming video.

I love West Virginia…. I use to live in Martinsburg and I fell in Love with it. Every once in a while I go back to visit. Martinsburg has been really growing. I would love to move back but it is getting too expensive for me to live there now. When I first moved there in 2006 I was paying 650 dollars for a two bedroom it was a very nice spacious apt. The reason why I moved there is because I couldn’t afford where I was living in Maryland my apt. In Maryland was way too expensive my rent was 1395.00 a month just for a one bedroom so I had to go. So yes…… West Virginia is a place that was so peaceful and calming, the people are much friendlier than where I came from.

My wife and I travel by motorcycle and live just North of Pomeroy, Ohio which is just across the Ohio River from West Virginia. In 2002 we were on our way home from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Our friend wanted to come across rt 55 which we never heard of. What a beautiful ride. On the Blue Ridge ad Skyline Drive we were up on the mountains looking down. On Rt 55 we were down in the valley for the most part looking up. Either was it was beautiful. We stopped at Senaca Rock where we ate some of the best pizza ever! Blue Rock, Cass, and Elkins. At took RT 33 home.
In more recent years we go to Davis WV (Blackwater Falls) and Thomas, WV. where you can get up close to wind turbines and a great overlook just West of Thomas WV. We also travel to Hawk's Nest, New River Gorge, Summerville Lake and every place between. One of my favorite stops is Berdine's 5 and 10 in Harirsville, WV. Berdine's is the oldest still operating 5 and 10 in the country, an amazing stop about 20 miles East of Parkersburg.
West Virginia is a hidden beauty. But I also like Virginia and Kentucky. We live in Ohio and there is beauty there too like the Hocking Hills region and any where along the Ohio River.

I'm really considering moving to West Virginia. I'm originally from North Alabama and currently in Montana.
While Montana has some of the most beautiful places on Earth(Glacier), there's also a lot of dead grass, smokey air, cloudy skies, and burnt trees.
West Virginia looks like a good middle ground between the vast, wild Mountain land of Montana and the Lush, vibrant color and vegetation of Alabama.

West Virginia reminds me of some places out west in many ways. It's different than anywhere else east of the Mississippi. It's definitely different than Alabama, or SE Tennessee (where I spent a total of about 20+ years.) Some of the scenery is comparable to the ridgelines in Northern Alabama, or Middle Tennessee. It's pretty much the same chain of mountains from West Virginia to Alabama. Alleghenies in the North, Cumberlands to the South. But West Virginia is entirely different. Climate plays a huge factor! We only recently moved to Virginia. This part of Virginia reminds me a lot of other places in the south, and the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains are beautiful. But as soon as you cross one of the mountains into West Virginia everything changes. I have an entire playlist on West Virginia. There are a few videos that are somewhat repetitive. But if you can handle watching a lot our shtick, you might find some answers you're looking for when it comes to your potential move. We love West Virginia! Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!

Love the vid and am sharing it to FB. Love watching it and saying to myself, " I know exactly where he was standing for that shot!" I live in Ritchie right now but have lived in Tucker and Pendleton, with Pendleton being my favorite county for sheer beauty around every bend, picturesque little agricultural towns and sweet, sweet spring water. Thank you for making a positive vid about my state....I agree with you, I love it that we can't get cell service here!! Oh, and the reason why more people don't come to Pendleton, Hardy, Grant, etc. are the limited places to stay....all those counties have not invested in any good hotels to accommodate tourists. Even across the line into Monterey, VA , one of the most beautiful towns you'll ever see, you have very little place to stay that's comfortable and/or doesn't cost your firstborn. Then there is also the lack of good restaurants in these counties...there are a few hidden gems but mostly not much to choose from.

That last white building is one of the last remaining one-room schoolhouses in Pendleton County. Nice views of Germany Valley! If you visit Franklin, you'll be able to take a walking tour and see 39 historic homes - one of the corner buildings is an old pharmacy and doctor's office! This area is full of history - prehistory, with hundreds of years of permanent Native American settlement around Seneca Rocks, log cabins like Sites Homestead at Seneca Rocks, built as a one-room cabin in 1839. George Washington was tasked by the Virginia governor to establish forts to protect settlers from Indian raids and there are dozens of small forts listed in early land records. During the Revolutionary War, Tories took refuge in the mountains west of Seneca Rocks - there's a sign on 33 that details this. During the Civil War, Pendleton County was divided between those favoring the Union and those supporting the Confederates. For those visitors interested in geology, this whole region typifies karst topography - lots of sinks, caves, underground rivers - for spelunkers, this is a rich area! Geology students from JMU make trips here each semester to learn about the rocks. Hunters can find turkeys, bear, and deer - even bear with a V-shaped spot of cream-colored fur on their chests - that's the native species of WV bear. Several species of trout are found in the streams and rivers here. And if you like rock climbing, several local companies offer instruction before taking students on Seneca Rocks. I love the old barns - some timber-framed. I moved here from Northern Virginia after falling in love with the area - visitors would do well to come with an open mind, try what's here, and listen to the locals. Ask questions - but nothing like, "So how come you don't have cell service?" Leave your home at home and really experience life in WV. Living here is a bit more rustic than a lot of people are willing to take on. We have no Starbucks, no McDonald's, Walmart is 45 minutes away or more, grocery shopping can be 35 minutes away. There is nothing that screams "tourist". Enjoy the waterfalls, the streams, the mountain views, sunsets from Spruce Knob, wildflowers in three seasons, the small country roads. I absolutely love it here!

The Appalachian mountain range is four million years old compared to the Rockies that is realitivly new only around one million years old . Which made more underground caverns some filled with water .
The name of the road by my camp is an old Indian name for hollow mountain.

West Virginia is my home state. I love it soo deeply and I want the rest of the US to love it as much as I do.
Sadly what keeps a lot of people away, and drives people out (myself included) are a lot of the state's socioeconomic downfallings mixed with the resident's resistance to change.
"If its not coal its treason" kind of thing.
I've heard WV referred to as a "fly-paper state" its easy to get here and get established, but nearly impossible to get out. Its fsily cheap to live in WV, but the infrastructure across the state is horrendous, with some roads being easier to drive covered in snow. And the opioid crisis is running rampant in the Southern part of the state.
Despite all that, the people are some of the kindest, most generous people anywhere, and has a culture and origin unlike any other I've seen.
I'm really happy more people are getting to see WV for what it is, rather than ABC's Cop Drama needing a back drop for a meth kingpin.

Great comment. Occasionally we make a serious video, and I’ve considered doing a deep dive into West Virginia. But videos like that can be unintentionally offensive, not to mention the fact that they’re extremely time consuming and extremely difficult to get right. I think we’ve made about 40 videos in West Virginia (obviously, we love the state). But in making so many West Virginia videos (and more to come) we’re trying to showcase the very best of West Virginia! However, we want to include more West Virginians, because they’re so kind, and hospitable. West Virginia is amazing! Love the state and especially the area I am from. I also love how quiet it is, yes I want more people to know about this area but I also like the peacefulness of being "alone". From where I live in Grant county you are within a short drive of Smoke Hole Canyon, Dolly sods, Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls, Spruce Knob and so many more. Everytime I visit these places there are always a bunch of out of staters visiting but not enough to make things crazy.

WV is going to explode with growth soon. The tourist industry is going to boom! I'm glad we're getting to visit now. But I know the state needs the revenue too. We love it!

I live in Elkins not far from where you were at. No far from there you had the Greenbank radio observatory with one of the largest radio telescopes in the world the Cass Railroad and some of the best skiing at Snowshoe resort

I am so happy to see that you made it back from West Virginia all in one piece… You really need to be careful out there Bigfoot mating season has ended but mama Bigfoot is now sitting on her eggs which makes her extremely volatile and dangerous…Beautiful footage of a beautiful state by the way…
