Daft Punk must really love Digitech stuff since I’m 99.9% sure they used a Digitech Bass Synth Wah as the presets are spot on with the tones you hear on Human After All.
I was able to get a similar sound on a mini nova using one of its presets, basically like playing a vocoder/talkbox, but with no synth carrier. I always see people covering digital love and something about us with a regular vocoder and presenting it as how they actually did it and I get a lil peeved cause it's very obviously not that.
I've had one since new (original, not EX), but only recently found it in a box of music gear that was stored away. Thinking of putting a sax through it to do section sounds and other effects.
Hey Chris ! You did a really great job on this one ! It seems that this patch is not the one you used on "One more time". I wonder, would you agree to share the patch/starting point and the modif you did in order to achieve such a close result ? Cheers
I think you might be right on the money about Daft Punk running their guitar through the Vocalist for the Digital Love solo. Also, as a side note, there are many VST equivalents to this harmonizer - AKAI's DecaBuddy, Steinberg's VoiceMachine Processor, Izotope VocalSynth and VocalSynth 2 (in PolyVoice mode), Eventide's OctaVox, Image-Line's Pitcher (in Octave mode with MIDI control on and Formant setting engaged), Antares Harmony Engine, and probably a few others.
Do they use a similar algorithm, or do they not sound close? Because Digitech is known for developing their own distinct sounding algorithms in everything they've ever made. Especially their vocalists, which span almost 10 years with the same sound.
@@SiliconPrairie Digitech would be using a proprietary algorithm that all harmonizers use. How they implement it (and add additional processing) is what makes the difference
@@SiliconPrairie The way they implemented the ciruitry in the unit almost certainly but not the algorithm. Interestingly, it's the same algorithm Celemony built upon to create Melodyne
I own a Vocalist Workstation and it absolutely uses the same DSP tech this one does. Completely identical sound. Interesting thought on the guitar. What notes do you think were original versus pitch corrected? Perhaps just the handful of chord changes, and the vocalist for the insane solo? I assume this was all before the distortion pedal.
There are other products that came out afterwards that can do the same and more. TC Helicon took over the harmonizer market with better products, such as the VoiceWorks Plus and the VoiceLive 3. The VoiceLive is much better for live performances because it has better automation and dynamic features, such as an automatic voice EQ to enrich vocal quality without having to be an audio engineer to learn what's being done. Most people aren't vocal effects engineering specialists, so it's not so easy to track the technology changes that have been happening over the last 15-20 years. The VoiceWorks Plus is basically a vocal synthesis rack, with a very clean low-noise Burr Brown-based mic preamp, but you need to know audio engineering rather well to use it properly. The VoiceLive is more usable by non-engineer vocalists. The Daft Punk duo are basically music engineering gear-heads who've been at the cutting edge of vocal processing. Imogen Heap and BeardyMan are the only other artists I know who are in the same category. BeardyMan is the king of live vocal processing performance and composition. See his recent youtube LIVE from a Soviet Fishing Vessel to see what I mean.
I have a voice live 3 .. it’s the WORST investment I’ve ever made as far as music gear ⚙️ is concerned.. also I have never heard this effect in my machine and I have had it over 5 years now .. plug-ins sounds much better the the tc helicon.. and it was $800
TC Helicon is IVL. It’s the same company, just after a few changes in partnerships and ownership - TC Helicon was formed when they teamed up with TC Group, which was then bought by Behringer. The VoiceWorks uses the same algorithm as the Studio Vocalist EX. Imogen Heap used a DigiTech Vocalist for Hide and Seek.
There’s a few presets that can be used, but it’s easy to set up. You just need to use MIDI notes mode with the dry signal volume all the way down, and play the MIDI notes into the MIDI in via a keyboard or sequencer. On the Studio Vocalist EX, preset F38 will do what you want. The presets are different across different models. On the Workstation EX, 33 is a good basic MIDI notes mode preset.

@@CHAYsounds In stereo mode the dry voice is mixed with the vocoded voice. Is there a way to mute the dry voice and hear only the vocoded one in the output? 🙏🙏🙏
@@bernyboss Yep, you can just turn down the volume of the dry part. That way you just get the harmonised signal. This is possible with all the DigiTech Vocalist models I’ve tested (Workstation, Workstation EX, Studio EX, VR, VL3D etc).
I believe it can, but the older Vocalist models sound a little different. The main upgrade for the EX models was better pitch recognition. The older models can do MIDI notes mode (incorrectly called “vocoder” for earlier models). Take a look at the Vocalist II manual to find out how to set it up. :D

That video is no longer available, but I’ve upgraded a Vocalist Workstation (1.02 firmware) to use the EX firmware (2.02). It required flashing a new chip and swapping it over. I was only able to do this because I also had another Vocalist Workstation with the 2.02 firmware.
