I built a mini semi truck to ride!

  • This is how I built my semi truck from a John Deere 115 ride-on mower. We were building a float for a local parade. The theme was Tim Burton "universe". So naturally the thought process was swift, and goes as follows; "Hmmm, ok let's re-use the carcass from our sea serpent to make a sandworm from Beetlejuice! Great Idea! We will have a proper float! Let's put it on a trailer and everything.....Oh and let me pull it with a mini semi truck, driven by LARGE MARGE from Peewee's Big Adventure! Can we actually pull this off?" The rest is recent history! (Sorry for the skipping music in parts of the video, that was an accident)

      There's a company somewhere in the U.S. that takes pickup trucks (pretty much everything but the cab) and using a custom mini cab they literally make a mini peterbilt or kenworth aka lil' Pete and lil' Kenny. Just Google mini Peterbilt or lil' Pete lol Check them out, they are really well designed and come as a complete kit (definitely need professional installation unless done at their shop) 👍🏼

    Another set of rear wheels to replace the front for equal size will help with proportions.
    For a quick parade entry, not bad!

    • @thethinkerer
      @thethinkerer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I felt the same way, I had a pair of narrow wheels from a motorcycle trailer that I planned on putting on the front originally, but I then would have had to modify how the rear axle mounts to keep the frame level, and since I had a deadline I opted to forego that surgery and let the size discrepancy remain!

    • @thethinkerer
      @thethinkerer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Holy crap, you are right! I see some new ones that have the same size but it looks like maybe the older ones had smaller wheels in the front! This is awesome for me, as a kid I was almost obsessed with bigger tires in the back, I thought it made cars and trucks cooler. This project it was just easier to not change the fronts, as I had a deadline for the local parade, someone else in the comments here even mentioned the tire size discrepancy, but now if anyone asks I can say it is just a Thunder Roller haha!

    Very cool. Seeing you work that sheet metal brought back memories. Btw, new sheet metal has an oil on it. Use vinegar to clean it and the paint will stick forever. Years ago when my daughter was little, we were at the local annual parade when she saw kids riding in the parade on four wheelers. She said I want to do that. I explained to her that four wheelers were expensive and we really didn’t have a place to ride them since we lived in town, but I could probably build her some thing That we could ride in the parade. That seem to appease her.
    Next year rolls around, we are at the parade again, she gets quiet, and then she looks up at me and tiny little voice said “you know, you never built me anything to ride in the parade”
    Yeah, you can guess how that made me feel. So I was determined to live up to my word. Working 58 to 62 hours six days a week. The following year was not really conducive to building anything for the parade. And then one day it dawned on me that I actually had two weeks before the parade . I blurted out the fact at work and one of my coworkers, who was also a pretty good friend asked me what was the matter, and I explained the situation. He laughed and said basically there’s no way in hell you can build something to put in the parade in two weeks. I told him I thought I could. He was still unbelieving and even made a bet that he would buy me a steak dinner if I could pull it off. That wasn’t the main reason, but it was further incentive to get to work. So I found an old electric golf cart, chopped and stretch the frame, added an old Wisconsin 20 hp engine right in front of the rear axle. Made framework to support the body. Bought a bunch of brand new galvanized sheet metal like you used. And went to work. What ended up happening was a lot of late nights, a few cuts, and bruises, and the making of an 8 foot long 3 1/2 foot wide, 1932 Ford roadster that had rack and pinion steering, a working drivers door that locked, chrome swing arm, front suspension, 12 inch rear, and 8 inch front tires with baby moon, hubcaps, 6 V bucket headlights upfront, a stainless steel mesh grill, and an awesome blue paint job that was sprayed on the night before the parade. Of course, I had to have photographic proof in order to win the bet so that happened as well. Got there early the morning of the parade, staged in order and waited until we finally started moving. it started pouring down rain right as we began moving into the parade sequence. A young Friend of mine had helped with the build and was there riding a ten speed along side of us. He ran into a local store, where I knew some of the workers and grabbed an industrial size black trash bag, which we poked armholes and head hole in for my little girl as a makeshift raincoat. After I was good and drenched, the rain stopped. 🙄 We decided to take the trash bag off because she was getting hot. In the process, I touched my elbow against the spark plug that was sticking up out of the body right behind the driver seat, grounding out my rain drenched body and the magneto. You want to talk about a shocking experience. As we went a little further, it seemed like the engine was missing, but it was a single cylinder so I thought that was odd. When I turned around to look, I saw that in my flailing, after being electrocuted, I had actually knocked the spark plug wire completely loose. It had been running the whole time by arching a quarter inch across an air gap to the spark plug. We had the beast for several years after that. Occasionally, I would get it out and drive it around the small town just for fun. It was pretty fun to drive. With the rack and pinion steering you could be doing donuts to the left spin completely around to doing donuts on the right all with one finger. One day an old man showed up and asked if I wanted to sell it. The kids were getting older, and it took up a lot of space in the garage, but I was still hesitant. Then he told me what he wanted to do with it. There was a pretty big parade that was held in July in a small Kansas town and he wanted to enter it as a parade float. So I relented and made him a very good package deal for it and the trailer. He came back later and told me he had bought brand new tires and fancy wheels, for it, entered it into the parade, and won first place. that was the last time I talked to him, and I don’t know what happened to it. All that’s left now are the pictures and the story.

      People sometimes act shocked that I build what I do for the parade, knowing it is a fifteen minute fame thing, and putting all the hours in. They get surprised when I tell them I don't make any money. Sort of a chalk drawing before a rainstorm. Well this build is a little more robustly built by comparison but what I am trying to say is this; I really appreciate you sharing your story here. It gives me a sense of community, and validity. I don't have any children, but I kept the Imagination from back when I was one, and it is nice to see all the faces light up, young and old, when I roll/walk/crawl by in one of my creations. What a story, thanks!
