Cleveland’s new fireboat, Marine 21, was christened as the Garret A. Morgan. It was delivered earlier this year, and was only recently placed in service. It replaced the old fireboat, the Anthony J. Celebrezze, which was built in 1961 and which fought several of the fires that burned the Cuyahoga River back in the day.

Nearly 25 years in a Chemical Plant, I had the distinction of being an Instructor for 8 Years on aspects of Industrial Hygiene, my particular contribution (there were well over 1000 people, in groups of 30 or so - until everyone was through the course for the year, that attended mandatory Industrial Hygiene Training Each Year) was Air Purifying Respirators. Due to the Chemicals in the Plant, Jobs Done on Breathing Air (Supplied Air) and for Emergencies (SCBAs) were taught by others. Some chemical releases; where I worked, and at a number of other Facilities in the Country; are so deadly that a Totally Encapsulated "Level A" HazMat Suit is required, the SCBA is Sealed in the Suit with the Employee and the Suit must be Burped periodically to allow the air to escape. But the limitations on Air Purifying Respirators must be known, they don't supply Oxygen, they don't filter certain chemicals, the Atmosphere cannot be Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) except, I think, in Limited and very Specific Escape Only Respirators, the Maximum Use Concentration needs to be known and not exceeded, etc. Employees were required to wear a Gas Monitor that was used to Detect and Alarm on Specific Levels of Low Oxygen, or Above Certain Levels of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Carbon Monoxide, (CO) and Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), and Act Accordingly for the Conditions that cause the Monitor to Alarm. Employees were instructed to wear the Monitor at Breathing Level (often on the Shoulder) because Gas Stratifies and what is Safe Standing Up may not be Safe when Bending Over (for Example) or when working at Different Levels in a work area. The Monitors are Bump Tested Each Day before initial use, and Calibration Gas is used allowing the Alarm to Occur and the Bump Test Station to determine if the Gas Monitor is working correctly. I watched this episode with Great Interest, thanks for bringing it and so many other wonderful shows.

In 1971 similar explosion happened in Lk Huron for the Detroit water tunnel. 21 dead after the blast. Another died later from his injuries. Tunnel was nearly 5 miles long. Same thing, they think natural gas collected at the lake end of tne tunnel where they were welding. At that end (lake end) all they heard was a little rush of air and heat. The tunnel acted like a rifle barrel and shot debris 5 miles away out the other end of the tunnel in Port Huron. I was a child then only 6 yrs old, but I remember eveyone talking about it for a long time. I lived in the next town and it seemed everyone knew someone who died in the tunnel. Years later I met a MI OSHA instructor/teacher for construction. He told us he was at the mouth of the tunnel and had just exited it turning up a slight incline to the right walking towards a construction trailer when the explosion occurred and blew him backwards 30 or more feet. He was uninjured, but men around him that were in the direct line of the blast were cut horribly by the flying shards of metal that were ejected by the blast. He was a trusted individual at the work site and was tasked with retrieving jewelery from the limbs of the men who perished for identification purposes. They were cut to pieces by sheet metal that turned to flying razor blades propelled by the blast. There is a history video on YT Port Huron tunnel expolsion.
My Dad was a Commercial Fisherman along the North Shore of Lake Erie. There was a Fishery almost every mile. Lamprey Eels and Gill Netters ruined that for the Fisheries.
So much history has been lost from generations before. We are sadly ignorant of the successes and failures of our forbearers and as a result, there is little gratefulness for the efforts of "common" ppl to reach beyond the confines of economic/racial/educational/gender status.
