- Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

If you're new around here, Venomoth is a Psychic/Flying type, you can't change my mind.
Another month of Scott. don't burn yourself out King
burnout isnt really a problem for him, he has said before that he does a lot of recording in advance (hence why this was recorded before the mr. mime video) so the entire month of content has likely already been finished
31:02 “Bruno is terrifying” 31:08 “this might be the most difficult battle in the game.”
What a character arc Bruno has gone on, truly an example of how anyone can improve themselves.
Yeah, Bruno in FRLG is way better than when he was introduced in Crystal.
@@cheesehotdog3471and his debut in gen 2 was definitely a big improvement over this random hiker in gen 1.
A reminder that it took Aerodactyl three generations, equalling 6 years of existence, to learn Rock Slide, a move it gets STAB from that was released at the same time as it did.
And it took it four, for a total of 10 years, to learn it naturally.
And to add insult to injury, Lance's Aerodactyl learned it in Gen 2 lol
The irony is that Double Edge with 120 Power is actually stronger than STAB Rock Slide. That is until it got Stone Edge.
@@shadowtitanx3962but Rock Slide can be super effective.
Game Freak up to this day in Gen 9 still have a serious issue with movesets and moves, there are still many types lacking good and consistent STABs. It's something that would really really easy to fix but Physical Ghost, Ice, Psychic and Electric moves and Special Rock, Fighting and Flying moves are still lacking despite some options creeping up but with low distribution rates or sometimes Pokémon exclusivity
@@ShadowtheTH-camr523 by that logic, this point applies to every pokemon game
1:03 Venomoth arrow is hilarious. I laughed for at least a minute!
Fitting since it’s a rock/flying type, just like Aerodactyl
Not calling October, Scottober at this point feels like a missed opportunity lol amazing content as always scott.
26:40 you can never flinch Dragonite it has Inner Focus
A Scott video right as I'm going to bed. Gonna be sleeping so good tonight with this on by my side.
Well he released it at noon for himself....
Bruh. Sleep hygiene.
Supposedly Firered/Leafgreen were made because Ruby and Sapphire had no backwards compatibility (because Nintendo had no hardware support to connect GBC and GBA games) so only 200 out of the possible 386 Pokémon were available in those games. To alleviate the missing of almost half the Pokémon, these remakes as well as the Gamecube games have been packed with Pokémon that are not obtainable in Ruby and Sapphire.
I think more than a hardware issue, it was an issue of DVs and stat xp vs. IVs and EVs.
this makes sense. never thought about that.
@@smilingindian989and abilities and natures. Gen 3 added/changed a lot of the battle system and pokemon stat setups.
While delivering a masterpiece in the process
I made it to 39:25. And no Scott, YOU'RE INCREDIBLE!
The best part about this time of year is the shear abundance of content Scott blesses us with. Thank you for all your hard work Scott!
I actually think pressure would've been slightly more useful here. You never made use of a recoil move and blastoise could've maybe been stalled out of hydro pumps
Yep. Pressure would have technically done something, while rock head did literally nothing.
@@chrisdaignault9845 Pressure would have added time, since it has to display the "Aerodactyl is exerting its Pressure" message in every battle
@@lookingglass4422 I'm not sure that message happens in gen 3. Could be wrong though.
I thought that Scott was going to get double edge in victory road. I would’ve replaced wing attack with it
Once again, I think he should’ve Double Edge.
32:33 “In his first appearance in generation 2, he was ok.” - this subtle dig was not lost on me, Scott. Well done, sir.
While we're sharing stories, I completely missed out on FRLG. I was 13/14 (not sure if they came out here in Europe in 2004 or 2005) and like Scott I had no friends who played the games (or any friends at all, much like today xd) and the only other person around me who still played them was my cousin. People bullied me in my hometown because of that and I quit playing Pokémon altogether. It wasn't until 2008 when I got a laptop and I played Pokémon Stadium on an emulator that I decided that I loved these games and no one was going to keep me away from them, but by that time it was too late to get FRLG as I couldn't find them anywhere, so I went straight to Gen IV. I haven't stopped playing Pokémon since.
Keep up the good work, Scott! Hope the October videos will treat you right 🫶🏼
That's unfortunate, you would have definitely loved FRLG
One of my favorite memories with Scott's thoughts:
I was in a camping tent, tripping really hard in the middle of nowhere with my girlfriend at the time. As I was listening to all the cars go by on the highway I started to have some pretty dark negative thoughts. I normally don't touch my phone in these situations but this time I decided to try and watch something funny or uplifting on TH-cam.
And the first video on my feed was an Aerodactyl playthrough! I instantly felt warm, cozy and nostalgic listening to you relieve your childhood with Pokemon games that I could easily relate to as the fun colors and background did all kinds of crazy tricks to my brain.
I had been watching the channel pretty regularly before you even had an actual overlay, but at this moment something just clicked and I don't think I've skipped a video since. Thank you for making my drug fueled adventure even more awesome lmao 🤣😎
10:52 Pokémon Red and Green came out in Japan first. The Red and Blue we have here is based on the Japanese Blue with the JP Red/Green’s available Pokémon.
Good to see character growth from Aerodactyl and Bruno, truly a wholesome video
Christmas comes early hearing all the new uploads we can expect. Thanks for continuing to make wicked videos Scott man!
Man, I wasn't expecting to start the video with Scott talking about an old friend who changed his life forever because of their shared love of Pokemon, and how they were forced to stop talking with each other. God, that hit me right in the childhood.
32:28 classic Scott
Bruno was, of course, introduced in generation 2! I wonder how many other jokes I've missed just from zoning out while watching your videos hahaha
Ah, MSN. Those were the days. I was in high school, hated it, and chatting with people I met via a Zelda forum on MSN was my escape. First time I had met anyone who understood me, since no one in Kansas knew how to small talk without involving sports.
My biggest issue I felt with FireRed and LeafGreen was how limited and isolated it felt. Unlike Gen 2 and RSE, your choices were pretty heavily restricted in terms of what you could get, like items and berries. It kinda fit, but also didn't because there was all this color and move variety brought over from RSE, but with a lot of the restrictions of Gen 1... but the restrictions, this time, were restrictions on what you already had prior. That's my experience anyways.
Ground not resisting Steel makes sense to me, over here with a shovel, diggin' these holes.
Dude made videos for next year back in January. Scott is a machine!
Thanks Scott you’re my favorite Pokémon content creator been a fan for years keep up the good work
Love Koga's entrance! It's as if he was a ninja or something? 😂 it's slick and fits perfectly!
Thanks for spoiling us with this series, Scott! Love from Edmonton!
Halloween Month starts with my Birthday and one of my favourite Pokemon :)
thank you for all your videos, Scott - you're awesome
Happy birthday
“Agatha is really annoying. I’m not able to one shot any of her Pokémon.” Proceeds to one shot Crobat 😂😂
I didn't see that Pressure description coming until Scott already got going, good heavens.
Love end of Year with Scott's Thoughts
Lots of relatable moments in this video. Being 12 when these came out, not really playing any gens after, spending all night on msn after school, great times 😢
Its cool to see how much better both Bruno and Aridactal have gotten sence generation one.
I subscribed when you mentioned Starcraft:Brood War! My Life for Auir!
Protoss was my favorite race!
Something decent again for boring cold nights, cheers pal, hope you're still enjoying doing the vids
Protip: Post pictures of your cat with the games you still own!
The law of Ancient Power states that you'll only get the omni boost in the most pointless of battles
FRLG was a way to get Kanto pokemon into the next gen because they didn't have the ability to connect Gameboy games with Gameboy advance games, bdsp is an unfinished cash grab that plays as ugly as it looks. I can even give some credit to the let's go games since it's a new style of game with a somewhat new story
LeafGreen was my first Pokemon game (in 2008, well after release), so I'll always have a soft spot for it! It always blows my mind that it was only 6 years between the international releases of RB and FRLG,
I'm surprised you didn't use a Brave nature. Awesome run. Aerodactyl finally doing great like it deserves to! With Rock Slide, for once!
All Hardy natures in FireRed and Platinum for first runs.
Oh sweet, an Aerodactyl run to start off Spoopy Season!
80 hp. I thought you said "it has ADHD" 😂😂
I feel like I'm one of the few people who actually likes the Sevii Islands. I liked the expansion of Kanto and the little island communities. And new places to catch Johto Pokémon.
My major issue with Firered and Leafgreen is that you can't trade non Kanto Pokémon into the game unless it's post game, AND you do a bunch of extra stuff. There's no way around this on legitimate hardware, either. I even tried doing it by trading to one from XD and Coliseum, but they went out of their way to stop it there, too. It's infuriating how much they handicapped the game until you've jumped through all the hoops.
I remember when these came out and the Kantonian Federation went nuts. There were tours for months, even little cup. 😊
Ooh, a new video this soon already? What a fine start to the Venomoth Month.
Poison, Bug, Dark and Ghost? So no Venomoth? Such a shame.
I've been binging your videos again recently (I always seem to watch in bursts) and it's been super helpful keeping a clear head while life is... well.. life. Thanks for that.
Regarding some of your nostalgic stories, it certainly hits home. I remember Firered being the first time I wasn't quite feeling a Pokemon game. I finished it and liked it, but it was with a lukewarm feeling contrary to the absolute hype I had felt starting Sapphire earlier in the generation (and also Diamond WAY later). Though to me, the Seviis were actually a fresh wind that snapped me out of that feeling. I loved exploring them, however small, and I still like them quite a bit.
There are some strategic considerations I would expect of Scott, were this Yellow where he regularly completes multiple playthroughs to optimize a pokemon. It went fairly well for a first completion of a pokemon in a game he HASN'T cleared several thousand times. It will be interesting when he reaches the point of having FireRed as polished as Yellow.
The clearest thing to consider is using Rock Slide against Arcanine for an additional ~12% damage over Earthquake to fish for a oneshot. The calc for the shown stats for the Aerodactyl vs Arcanine ware 79.3%-93.6% for EQ and 88.6%-104.6% for Rock Slide, a 31.3% chance to OHKO. Bringing in 120 BP Double-Edge seems another thing to consider, especially for the Blastoise. Double-Edge, disappointingly, would only be a 22.7% chance to 2HKO the Blastoise. Level 80 brings that up to 77.7% meaning that while worth considering, it may be better to fish for flinches.
The optimized moveset would also be interesting. Without Wing Attack, Heracross becomes a 2shot and Exeggutor becomes 64.5% to 2shot at level 80 (using Double-Edge, compared to the guaranteed with Wing Attack even at 78). Without Rock Slide, Arcanine is a 2shot. Without Earthquake, Tyranitar is a 3shot. This means the strategy would still be somewhat RNG dependent, looking for Arcanine or Blastoise to miss, at the very least. Both would be using moves with poor accuracy, just a 60% chance of both Iron Tail AND Hydro Pump hitting. Once Rock Slide misses and inopportune crits are factored in... There doesn't really seem to be a clear answer for the battle without going up several more levels, at which point the grinding would take about as long as just lucking through.
(I love the optimization that Scott puts into secondary playthroughs, being a very much numbers focused person myself.)
Don't you mean.. SCARE-O-DACTYL?
Tomorrow: Praise be Lord Helix, He who was born to dance.
Pokemon and Starcraft; two of my favourite games. To this day I'm an avid player of both!
Finally an aerodactyl with a good rock move
Halloween is my birthday, so this month of videos feels like an extra gift!
the Venomoth lore deepens. a real innovation, going beyond its legendary type changing. who knew it was actually a fossil! what an absolutely true fact!
other interesting facts about Venomoth: it is a legendary, a mythical, a starter Pokemon, the divergent final evolution of Caterpie, technically a dog, a dragon, a pseudolegendary, an Ultra Beast, and it has a secret, hidden Mega form only present in the unreleased, elusive Pokemon Star, a ROM of which someone posted on GameFaqs, but the post was deleted by mods after two hours.
to go on your little talk about the remake, FRLG was mostly meant as a means to get the older gen games into the third gen, as there wasn't a way to transfer your pokemon from the gameboy to the gameboy advanced for RSE. and yeah....extra time between remakes kinda ruins such.
irc, GSC and its remake, HGSS, was about a decade.
We dreamed of months like this
Great fossil run love it ❤ 👍
0:43 I expected an Onix pun here.
"Expect the Onix-expected"
LETSSSSSS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THANK YOU SCOTT❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😱❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic stuff!!!
Btw at 18:22; you do know that Rock Slide doesn't make physical contact right? Despite it being a physical move! (I think it's really weird Ancientpower does, even as a physical move...)
And so Scott-tober begins!
Been needing some content to watch while grinding
Sufficient pressure will always shorten the amount of PP you can use before needing a rest
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time in all of these series that a Pokemon has kept a starting move all the way to the end.
Not counting trade shenanigans Pokemon like Elemental Punch Abra.
Just an interesting achievement I think.
Fossils as zombies, fantastic
Man.. lol was watching on my tv up until the point you said puts pressure on the opponents PP lmfao had to come go find my phone to comment this cracked me up
Something worth considering is that Pressure would have helped you out a lot. Especially in the league rematches, once you gain access to Leftovers, the Substitute + Protect combination can waste 4 of the opponent's PP at the cost of only 1/8 of your health. In contrast, you didn't even need Double-Edge throughout the playthrough, as Aerodactyl already had strong physical damage in Rock Slide.
from artosis to this and now you talk broodwar Holy
I always enjoyed the gen 3 sprite art.
scott do you ever think about how gyarados has venomoth's head plastered on its face
Rock Slide redemption arc
Hey Scott! Been watching since your very first solo runs and versus videos on the channel.
Quick question, have you ever considered making podcast/audio versions of your videos? Having these on spotify would be fantastic. I love listening to your videos on long car rides for work!
I'm excited for spooky month!!
Really enjoyed the video, it's too bad Aerodactyl always seems to get the short end of the stick. If you had kept Bite instead of Ancient Power, you would've been able to keep Steel Wing on hand, giving some more flexibility. I think this would've helped in the rematches. Earthquake isn't especially useful against anyone past Bruno (with the notable exception of Terry's Tyranitar) so you could give that up for Fire Blast for an easier time against the Steelix, then teach Steel Wing for the champion fight.
I wonder what nature would be preferred in a follow up play through. Brave seems to make the most sense for optimizing your damage output overall, but Quiet would give your special moves that extra bit of oomph to get through Rock types easier.
I believe in our rocky borb!
I see a Scott video, I click
You're nostalgic story is the SAME as mine.....I'm from the UK so October 2004 I was 1 months into high school and I was so disappointed everyone didn't like Pokemon anymore because it was "for kids" ughhhhh hahahha
My god the final league rematch stretch was a rush of adrenaline!
Is there a reason to stick to wing attack instead of aerial ace ? I mean, more PP, sure, but ignoring acc. Checks sound tempting.
Only love for your content Scott 🤙
Venomoth Fact #43: The main reason why Aerodactyl got Rock Slide in generation 3 was because Venomoth personally invited themselves to Satoshi Tajiri's office and kindly reqested that he stop butchering one of their children from millions of years ago.
I think Bite was the way to go with Misty's Starmie. Prolly still wouldn't have KO'd in one hit but could have gotten a flinch and def would have finished it off in two hits
Dude a gen 4 fired red and leaf green would be awesome. Then in consequence to that a gen 5 Heart Gold and Soul Silver would be godly ... If they ever fix the level curve.
I feel like your best answer for the champion was to teach fly instead of wing attack. So that way, you can consistently knock out the heracross. And if you had the pressure, ability, your opponents will get their PP drained faster since they can't hit you and you get a bit of leftovers healing for free.
I think he should’ve used Double-Edge, as the tutor is at the end of Victory Road.
The spooks begin!
ALL HAIL THE ALGORITHM!!!!
It begins!
@Scott’s Thoughts when u do omastar video can u show the gen 1 front sprite for omastar briefly it’s so sassy and I love it
4:40 Omg no way, today's FireRed's 20th birthday in Europe!
Hopefully there's some playthrough of Drapion, Froslass or Dusknoir 😊
It’s Scottober everyone!
I’ve just played through Pokémon Crystal again, I couldn’t find any videos of you playing through with poliwhirl(spelling?)(middle stage), I think it’s available move pool could give it a pretty solid time. I know your videos are all Done for The year but just for reference in the future
I don't think I've ever seen this back sprite in any of my playthrus
Nice intro animations :)
Inaccurate: Unlike in gen 1, it has to recharge on subsequent turns.
Accurate: Unlike in gen 1, it has to recharge on KO turns.
Hoping for a Banette vs Dusclops video this spooky season!
At least Aerodactyl has double edge here, these days it literally only has take down for recoil moves despite Brave Bird and Head Smash existing as potential STAB options.
In a couple of days it will be my birthday 🎂 so can you do a solo run with Beedrill cus it's my fav pokemon😊
Spookie month time.
I think it's time to add a makes contact marker to your overlay in the current moves section.
daily scotts we're winning
The only thing that dissapointed me personally in bdsp was that they should have made the remake based from platinum the story was more intriguing
I feel substitute should be the next move you ban. In gen 1, double team is "the solution to everything" and was banned. In gen 2 you banned hidden power in your first runs because every hard battle gets a solution. Now in gen 3 you have a move that öets you take moves that would one hit you with only the damage from an initial substitute (for example set up substitue on a weak pokemon and suvive a hydro pump) while also making you immune to stat drops from things like feather dance and intimidate; and also prevents status moves. It should be banned as well.
I think I disagree. Yes, Substitute is becoming a staple strategy, but it feels fundamentally different than the other banned moves. Double Team is luck based cheese, and Hidden Power is a "pick your favorite" move where you customize beyond the "designed intent" of a moveset. Substitute helps a lot with the particular mechanics of the 3rd generation, but it requires skill to use correctly as opposed to Double team, and it provides a defensive utility rather than offensive coverage like Hidden Power.
@@sgtflintlock6904 I disagree with this, because this has more upsides than double team. Just count how opponents get shredded because of this. Only one intimidate on Blane, no intimidate on rival 6 and no feather dance. Agatha becomes meaningless, the rival rematch Gyarados becomes tribal and the list goes on. With double team at least you have to set up 2+ times and you can still be unlucky and get hit. Substitute is 100 % protection till it fades and then you can set it up again
@@FifthPromise I don't think that's a bad thing? I guess I'd rather see a playthrough with Substitute being used than a playthrough where physical attackers have to grind to the point where they can win without it. the 3rd generation really lays it on thick with the stat debuffs and status moves, so having Substitute to allow counterplay if you need it seems like a very nice quality of life option imo.
@@sgtflintlock6904 it skews the result to favor Pokemons that otherwise wouldn't be ble to finish with those times. Would Aerodactyl finish third overall so far without substitute? Of course not. At least do what was done with hidden power and have one go without it so it is shown what a pokemon is capable of when facing the opponents without what basically is a free win, then in the follow up attempts, let it be legal.
For comparison, how much faster would some Pokemons be able to finish in yellow if double team were allowed. Gengar would likely suddenly be nr 1/2 because what holding it back is the fact that hypnosis is to unreliable.
So are you advocating for one move to be banned in each generation? Serious question
As you speak of playing Starcraft... Any plans for that channel in the nearer future?
