Funny thing is, the beta leaks revealed that Pinsir was going to have an evolution, before it got adapted into Heracross during development! If only we had known back then…
Also, can we talk about Scott's VERY infectious enthusiasm for everything in this vid!?! I don't think I've heard as much excitrment in a video, like I have for this one!
33:58 I think solo runners in general underestimate how strong fury cutter is when it gets built up, especially on bug types. Max power fury cutter hits like a train with STAB and Bugsy’s badge.
@@xAnonymousComediait’s an art of the possible move, kind of like rollout but more accurate. And playing at 4x speed building it up doesn’t take that much time and fast resets if you don’t get the luck is often faster that the training that would be required to beat certain road blocks.

Also shout out to Shawn and yourself for the edits, getting ahead and having time to polish the editing is so fun to notice and see.
Blanket fort! Love it! I have learned there is a trainer that shares the same name as me in Gen 2, cant believe I never noticed that. The shout out at 57:41! Also, i made it to 1:20:24. And no Scott, YOU'RE INCREDIBLE!
Later on Fury Cutter gets buffed to start at 40 power; if only that was the case here - that would've made the Gastly line much more consistent and comfortable to face.
Scott, is your expansion into gen 3-4 a commercial/community based decision, or is it that you're at a point where you're actually feeling the drive toward later gens? I've done multiple playthroughs of gen 1-4 and 6-9 but always find myself drawn back particularly to gen 2. I wonder if there's a point where I'll get sick of doing gen 2 runs (currently doing Crystal Legacy runs with all final form pokemon, about 20% through).
I guess I shouldn't be TOO surprised sbout Pinsir's dominance considering how great it was in Yellow. Still, it's funny how well it did once it got Hidden Power. Awesome job as always, Scott and Team!
Love the vids Scott! I know you love consistency too so I’m gonna point out something I noticed in the overlay. When the enemy has 6 pokemon, the last one’s attack stat is orange. I notice it on Petrel every time and idk if you noticed 🙃
Let me just that blanket fort story filled my heart. I tend to watch your videos on my phone under the blankets and it brought me back to my gameboy color with my magnifying glass flashlight attachment. Also playing Pokemon. Intentionally looking for the darkest places in my house to use it.
I wonder if Sentret for Cut/Surf and then pick up a poliwhirl while surfing to cover Strength/Whirlpool/Waterfall would be a better approach to HM users? EDIT: Though this does have the disadvantage that poliwhirl encouter rate is only 10% and poliwag can't learn strength... then again, if you manipulate the encounter like in Gen3, I guess that's immaterial?
Heracross really comes into its own WHEN IT GETS MOVES. it's quite good in Gen III and Gen IV. it may do well in Emerald if it can use Leer and Horn Attack to get past Roxanne, and then it doesn't have to deal with Ghost types early, learns Rock Tomb for Flying types, Brick Break at 23 for Magneton, and it can learn Dig. you may notice that it couldn't learn Dig in Gen II, but for whatever reason Game Freak changed that going forward. which makes sense. it's a beetle. beetles dig! oh yeah and it gets Bulk Up. and for fun you could use the move tutors for either Rollout or Fury Cutter, though I don't know when that would ever be optimal. Platinum is kind of wild because it gets five Level 1 moves. Endure, Horn Attack, Leer, NIGHT SLASH, Tackle. I think either Endure or Tackle would be the odd one out. idk if Night Slash is that great, but it's quite strong, and means it doesn't need to grind to 19 to get Brick Break to deal with Roark. it also gets Aerial Ace by level-up early as an answer to Gardenia. Close Combat at 37 is pretty great. still has Endure/Reversal if you want it. Rock Tomb, Rock Slide, Dig, Earthquake, Bulk Up, Shadow Claw, and uh, it has theoretical mid-game access to Swords Dance via the Game Corner. its speed does become more of a liability with Speed Creep in later generations, for sure. investing in Carbos is still not a bad idea.
Pinsir is so goat but I love my man herracross he just looks so silly and goofy! Loving the amount of uploads so far Scott happy Halloween! Make sure you don't burn yourself out though
It's insane that you had two different S tier Pokemon in one video but there was still a five minute difference. Awesome runs. Heracross did surprisingly good I think.
the timing of highlighting level up moves at the exact moment is just 😘 n1 cutter edit: the side to side comparison of the stats looks great too (that’s new, right?) man your vid quality is awesome. All the small details and it still keeps improving …
I’ll always say. It absolutely comes down to moveset. Almost every time and these two bug types are the truth. What a difference a single move makes. Yeah return, curse, and rest are going to be staples for the end game. But it’s the Pokémon’s early moveset that sets the tone for the rest of the game.
Griping about submission, sweeping with swords dance, losing to Blaine. Did anyone inform Pinsir that this is a Crystal run and not a Yellow one? Great to see endureversal put to use. Fun move synergy like that was something I liked about Gen 2. Gen 1 moves felt like they were meant to function well in a vacuum, but Gen 2 moves felt like they were meant to be used in tandem.
I love that blanket fort bit. I remember my siblings, an older friend and me actually built pillow forts to play Pokemon Gen2 sometimes. It was very cozy. Tauros, funnily enough, was the first and only solo challenge I tried based on your channel, because it's one of my favorite Gen1 mons and because it gets Rage. I'm not good with 4x speed though and grinding to Pursuit for the Gastly after Bugsy was a major annoyance, so I remember putting a pin in that. It stomped pretty much anything but Ghost though. In that sense, it's pretty similar to Heracross.
1:08:46 can someone explain what the numbers mean underneath the damage range that Scott is pointing out? Like how it says 204-204 for Espeon but then below it it says 180-180
I loved seeing how flavorful these two Pokemon got to be, especially in their first solos. It’s fun when something gets to break the mold and be gutsy at times by not using the basic strategies in Crystal.
Hercules is the best name for heracross. He is super strong like the Greek mythological Demi god and like Hercules beetle which he sort of looks like, although I believe he is inspired by a different species of beetle. 😁
If you want to do Tauros in Crystal one day, I think it'd be fun to see a Tauros vs. Miltank video. Put the two bovine mon against each other. Now, people will mention that Tauros is way better than Miltank, and that run would be unfair. It's actually not. A long time ago, I saw someone else do it, I think it was Squidgy? And Miltank won! Because it has a better moveset. If I remember correctly, I think it was because Miltank gets mud slap, but Tauros doesn't, so it's another one in the Heracross and Gligar club, who will also struggle against the rival's Gastly in Azalea town. But yeah, I think with Scott's approach of using hidden power on the 2nd playthrough, Tauros might win the 2nd time, but Miltank will get better 1st run results. It'd be interesting to see, I think. Pd: I just checked, and Miltank not only gets mud slap, but it also gets the elemental punches. All 3 of them. The only thing holding it back is its puny sp. Attack stat of only 40. Ofc, Miltank has a little bit less attack than Tauros, but base 80 is still decent enough for it to get one hits against everything with stab return and headbutt. And the fact that it gets a self healing move in milk drink by lvl up, gives it more longevity. Like, it'll die less often. So, if he ever does Tauros vs. Miltank, I believe Tauros might win by the tiniest of margins (like, the difference between them might be of two minutes or less), but Miltank would have less resets. That's what I think.
Is it wrong that I say a Slow growth rate could be advantageous if your Mon can afford to beat the game at a low level? I mean, you’d go through less bars of dialogue in battle than if you were using a faster levelling Pokémon.
3:07 I have to mention this but gen 2 OU is mostly centered around offense teams and stall is very weak. Its just that the offense is slower than any other generation
I was here for the heracross live stream, and i remember recommending using rock smash against the magnemites because it would have a higher effective power than headbutt. Im glad to see that ended up in the runs!
I don't know about pillow fort, but as a kid, I once got in trouble because I was caught playing Pokemon Yellow in class. I was forbidden from playing any video or computer games until the school year was up. Thankfully, it was only a couple of months, but that is an ETERNITY for a kid. Therefore, late at night, I'd sneak down from the top bunk and play Pokemon Blue on my brother's GBA instead. XD
I'm wondering if it'll ever be possible to be under 1 hour, even theoretically. I think it would have to be something with high BST and a bunch of egg moves to juice the learnset at the start, so the player almost never has to heal.
Watch the Kangaskhan video on my channel Feat. Snowy. I'm not sure in my format if I'll ever get a sub-hour time. But I do think it's theoretically possible.
One thing I've noticed about your recent versus videos that I haven't liked is that you don't switch back and forth between the two Pokemon enough. You used to go two or three gyms before switching now you go half the main storyline before you switch.
I appreciate the feedback! Just for some context, I will always be trying new things. Making the assumption: the way I have always done things is the correct way or the way things should always be done, is creatively lazy. There are other projects that are in the pipeline that have the older format, but I am working with both right now as an experiment. I may settle on one, or I may choose to employ both going forward depending on how the runs played out.
Outstanding performances! Scott you did go beyond expected! I love your crystal solo runs! You play it the best way in my opinion! You are not overleveled, you choose the most precise moves, you predict every possible scenario for the Pokemon's performances! You tend to have the perfect control of all the possibilities! Honestly, you're the best played! No doubt you do what you do masterfully! You must be a very intelligent guy, man, frankly, dedicated people like you tend to stand out amongst many others! I can't thank you enough Scott! Your crystal runs light up my days! You tend to get formidable results, because of your deep analysises and numerous attempts! I was right about you since the very beginning! You are excellent in what you do! You have improved so, so much! Congratulations on your work with every single Pokemon! You can be sure, one thing has been proved by you, maybe accidentally maybe not, and that is... Do your best ever and the outcomes shall ever go beyond your expectations!!!
Talking about gen 1 Pokémon like tauros, how would a voltorb do in gen 2. With rollout it could do better, but I think it would learn an electric move way later then in gen 1.
Did you happen to do the calcs for using Thief against the Goldenrod Dept Store basement rival fight in the first playthrough? I feel like it would have taken the luck out of the fight, but maybe I'm wrong.
I'm surprised your overlay doesn't show the volatile statuses like confusion, curse, leech seed, and attract. I think there's room for it near or next to where you put the accuracy debuff.
If Scizor was introduced today just like it was back then, it would no doubt in my mind be classified as Scyther's convergent form like the Toedscool, Wiglett, and Poltchageist lines.
While their both great Heracross tends to NOT get a ATTACK Fighting move to beat Whitney's Milktank IN 1 hit or at least not in the Gold/Silver versions not sure about this one though.
Ive been doing my on Heracross only Crystal run for a bit. Early game ghosts are the worst. Only learnable move to deal with them was fury cutter and swagger

I second that.
Scyther is unique in the facthat his evolutions are sidegrades instead of straight upgrades so it would be interesting to see
I've done kleavor in crystal on my channel. It was incredible
I like it but I think you need to use modern move sets for each
Scyther v Scizor v Kleavor Crystal
Past (Kleavor) Present (Scyther) Future (Scizor)

One thing I've noticed about your recent versus videos that I haven't liked is that you don't switch back and forth between the two Pokemon enough. You used to go two or three gyms before switching now you go half the main storyline before you switch.
Seconding this
I appreciate the feedback!
Loving this run dude just a question can you do a heartgold/soulsilver run?
"Whenever I can have a bigger PP; im happy" 😂😂😂
Yeah most of us guys are lol
Did you happen to do the calcs for using Thief against the Goldenrod Dept Store basement rival fight in the first playthrough? I feel like it would have taken the luck out of the fight, but maybe I'm wrong.
I'm surprised your overlay doesn't show the volatile statuses like confusion, curse, leech seed, and attract. I think there's room for it near or next to where you put the accuracy debuff.
If Scizor was introduced today just like it was back then, it would no doubt in my mind be classified as Scyther's convergent form like the Toedscool, Wiglett, and Poltchageist lines.
is November challenges going to be themed around pokemon that could be food?
Excellent video as always =)
We've had Heracross vs Pinsir, and next week is Scyther vs Scizor... but what about the REAL gen 2 bug vs bug video: Ledian vs Ariados?
We'll have to find out ;)
You know the run is a struggle when the rival is a problem after the azalea town fight
About how much difference could the missing Rare Candy have made for Heracross, relative to its tiermates?
It's in the 1:14 range, having Mega Horn for Karen wouldn't have moved it up much. The normal-types are all clustered around 1:10
Scott's a fellow Bug type enjoyer, nice
Heracross bears Rival 4 at exactly 1:00:00 real time and I need someone else to know that.
With it being Halloween, I can’t help but be curious what each Gym Leader would dress up as for the holiday. One thought I had was Pryce being Ebenezer Scrooge 😂
Rock/Ground in Crystal this year, as bad as Onix…Are we getting a Pupitar playthrough?
;)
