You can fully control your character while typing when using a separate input such as touchscreen or a controller. If WASD is used only in typing, then your other input can still change your direction. I play on ipad, therefore can control my character while typing with my thumbstick.

Just hold the swipe and hold the Joystick, want with your other thumb, you type the keys on the keyboard that’s built in to your device. Since you were still holding the joystick, not only does it not effect your typing, but you can still move. However, the only drawback is that you can only type with one thumb.
