I played the first ~10 levels of the endless mode using the same "the red ones in the hand + (teal -> gold) ones on the workbench" strategy and got bored after repeating the same thing 10x times.
Yes, some of the other color like red or ultramarine colors are mostly trap. Game might force you to play ultramarine ones at the very beginning. But try to to divert from that to cyan or pure gold ones.
