    I’ve always been amazed at how quiet, simplistic and efficient those motors are. 👍🏻

    Those look like Otis 219HT machines. The braking mechanism on those machines is quite unique.

    This is literally exactly what the Westin elevator machines used to look like. Just a lot more plates on the “pie plate” selector. Those are 1000 fpm tho.

    Basically a giant version of a brushed motor.

    • @dieselshadow
      @dieselshadow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It’s definitely a brushed DC motor. Huge and slow, but very powerful.
      Instead of having permanent magnets like most smaller DC motors have, this one has field coils and interpoles. The fields are controlled by varying the current to strengthen or weaken the magnetic force they make to control speed and torque of the rotor. The interpoles do the same thing only uses the same current the rotor uses so it’s self-governing.
      Pretty cool stuff. 👍🏼

      @@dieselshadow Universal motors use coils instead of magnets too so I guess the design is very similar.

    I believe the elevators at Sutton Place here in Wichita still use this type of selector system. There is only one working, though, and it's a shame because it's only has a 2500-pound capacity. The freight elevator has been down for nearly a decade now, and that really complicated things when they had to rebuild the old R-11 chiller.

    • @dieselshadow
      @dieselshadow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yessir, it could very well be. This is a faster elevator used in "express service" as in a bottom lobby floor and then all the way up to a collection of upper floors. For example floor 1, then 15 through 30. It wouldn't serve floors 2-14. Shorter building don't typically have express elevators and are usually slower in speed, mostly 350-500 feet per minute. Most low rise elevators in building with 5 floors and less use a hydraulic elevator which "pumps" you up to the floor and releases the oil back to a tank to lower you back to the lobby. Hydraulic elevators are slow and very inefficient compared to the traction elevator in this video. Traction (elevators that use cables) motors only have to overcome the difference in weight between the car and the counterweight.

    • @upanddownadventures
      @upanddownadventures 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are the fixtures & cabs original? Or have the replaced & redone them to make the elevators look modern despite still being mechanically original? I think it is rare to see a high rise elevator that still has a relay logic controller (note that I am not an elevator technician, I am an elevator enthusiast that especially likes older elevators).

      I think those machines, the guys who installed them, and the engineers who designed them were amazing. There was a process and some pride they took that the industry has lost in recent decades. I miss that the most.
      The machines that have survived and are still in use are in dire need of replacement. They simply don’t have the safety devices today’s machines have and just plain worn out. But modern packages are so thin, so lightweight and flimsy, they won’t last like these machines did.

    • @dieselshadow
      @dieselshadow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These large motors are DC. The controller is fed with 480vac through a transformer into a drive. The drive regulates DC voltage and current to both the armature and fields to control speed and direction of the hoist motor.

    • @TheTheo58
      @TheTheo58 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just for clarification, I did see an MG set in the background the DC traction motors. So they MG sets have been disconnected and the 480VAC transformer within the controller rectified to 480VCD connected to the induction fields and armature ? There was still a lot of noise in the machine room, thought maybe the MG's were still in operation.

    • @dieselshadow
      @dieselshadow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video, most of the old systems are still in place and in service. You do not get to see the new controls, drive, transformers, or chokes. Perhaps a new video is in order?

    • @TheTheo58
      @TheTheo58 6 ปีที่แล้ว
