  • This episode of Grounded takes a look at the rise and fall of Canada 3000 Airlines, one of the first airlines to collapse in the wake of 9/11 their downfall began months earlier when they acquired Royal Airlines / Royal Aviation from a serial airline entrepreneur. At the time of their demise Canada 3000 was the second largest airline in Canada, operating a fleet of nearly 40 aircraft to over 100 destinations worldwide including the only non-stop services from North America to India. Sit down and fasten your seat-belts as we take a look at the Canada 3000 story...
    If you haven't seen the episode on Royal, that video is available here;
    • Grounded: Royal Airlines
    If you are new to my channel, welcome! The Grounded Series gives a detailed look at airlines of yesteryear, whether they have gone bankrupt, merged or simply re-branded.
    I really hope you all enjoy this episode, it has been really hard to get this one done within such a short period (as I am literally going on holiday tomorrow). I had to cut several things for timing purposes too as well as speak a little faster in an effort to keep the run-time below half an hour...
    Thank you for watching, I really appreciate your feedback and suggestions for future episodes.

    Thank you for this video. I actually quit Royal in 2000 to join Canada 3000. I’ve moved on and am just transitioning to the 787 , in my 20th year at WestJet.

      Thanks Alexander, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 20 years with WestJet, that's a great achievement. I hope you like the 787, it's a bit bigger than the 737 😉

      Yeah, it did seem a bit more organised and less "hodge-podge" as it ended up following the integration of Royal and Canjet :) I'm glad you liked it :)

      I did a year with Air 2000 and still remember a painting hanging up in our crew room, a C3 757 landing with a plaque underneath "Happy 10th anniversary to our friends at Air 2000 from your friends at Canada 3000" - it was still there in 2006 and always gave me a lump in the throat when I saw it.

    When I worked as an aircraft mechanic in CYVR, I knew quite a few Canada 3000 Mechanics in the early/mid 1990s. They said Canada 3000 always treated their people well and never has any of the labour problems that plagued the other two big Canadian airlines. In a lot of ways, modern day Pre-Covid-19 Westjet reminds me of Canada 3000.

      I heard similar things myself when researching this episode and I agree regarding WestJet, I'd like to give them a go if they ever come to Manchester :)

      With regards to Westjet, they sort-of weny downhill especially since the take over by Onyx Corp. The biggest change was "firing" all their counter employees outside of Toronto Pearson, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver airports, and contracting out to lower paying companies like Swissport and Strategic Aviation. These two companies already provided ground baggage handling to Westjet. I used to work at YYT St. John's International and most of the former WJ staff never switched to Strategic Aviation. Two actually got hired with Air Canada and a few switched to PAL Airlines.

    Flew with Canada 3000 on the 757 aircraft from Glasgow to Vancouver with a refuelling stop in Reykjavik, Iceland. Having previously flown with Air 2000 from Glasgow to Orlando with a refuelling stop in Bangor, Maine, also on the 757. Both great airlines and are sadly missed. Have you done one of these on Air Club International? I always remembered those flying into Glasgow...one of the few airlines that flew the 747 into Glasgow back then

    The orange and white headphones they handed out were amazing as a kid, I remember being made fun of for wearing them at school but the sound quality was totally worth it... until they broke because they were made from cheap plastic of course, but for years they were my #1 headphones. I recently found a pair at Value Village, and wow! They still sound amazing after all these years!

    I flew on 3000 a couple times and enjoyed the airline for a budget airline. The planes were clean and seat pitch was good for what it was. I was a surprise when they bit the dust. Thank you for the episode, Canada 3000 was a good solid airline for the non business type. They are still missed

      @ExpoAviation  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment :) The closest I got to travel with Canada 3000 was flying on some of Air 2000's 757s which had been shipped over on lease, I'd definitely be using them a lot had they still been around today :)

      @@ExpoAviation back in summer 1996 I went on holiday to Florida on a Rich International Tristar. They went bust halfway through the holiday so we came back on a Laker DC-10 (the later iteration of Laker). Hope to see vids on those airlines in due course!

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, I never got a ride on a TriStar or a DC-10, I hope you enjoyed the ride :) I have glanced at Rich International in the past and have started a file on them, as for Laker, well, I have been on holiday overseas for a week and spent a good chunk of that reading a very large book on Freddie Laker. It has always been my intention to cover the three Lakers, I'm not old enough to remember the first one but do remember seeing Laker Mk2 at Manchester (Even snagged a safety card) :)

    • @RossForsterFraser
      @RossForsterFraser 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ExpoAviation the Rich Tristar had been all round the houses - the overhead signal were in Japanese (ANA), the entertainment system was Hawaiian Airlines, and the food/beverage carts still had Pan Am signage on them! The staff knew the end was coming, they were almost demob happy. The meals weren't very big, I remember one of the flight attendants saying 'two of them make a meal'. The Tristar hadn't been painted in the full livery, just all white with titles. The Laker plane was beautiful inside, it was all blue leather seats in economy with tv screens in each seat (not so common back in 1996). I remember it was a long, low takeoff out of Ft Lauderdale. Great flight, I think the plane was called Columbia Belle or something similar. This was late Aug / early Sept 1996 😊

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting, I'm glad to hear that they were still in good spirits despite the circumstances :) A lot of old galley equipment stays in the system long after the airline goes bust, depending on what it is it may have the name plated over but not always. Whilst at Excel / XL Airways, I found all sorts including Dan Air, Flying Colours, JMC, Inter European, Air Europe and bizarrely quite a lot of TWA oven shelves. Yes the 90s Laker really had potential, and he was very proud of the seatback entertainment though he had a lot of trouble with it, the first aircraft was delivered without it and had plastic covers in place of the not-yet-ready TV screens. There is a very interesting BBC documentary available on YT in several parts, I can't link to it but it's "Sir Freddie Laker - Trouble at the Top" and covers the launch and inauguration of his 1990s airline :)

    Absolutely superb video, always had an interest in the airline due to Air 2000 links but learned so much I didn’t know from this video. Remember flying on a Canada 3000 757 operating for Air 200 from Manchester back in the day as a kid with Canadian crew on the flight deck (they gave me a Canada 3000 sticker when I visited the cockpit 😄). Loved watching the Air Scandic and Peach air videos which brought back memories of summer holiday flights. I never realised the Air Scandic A300’s were so unique. I’m really pleased I flew on them now but at the time I was far from chuffed, I just wanted an Air 2000 757 😂

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Gareth, I'm really glad that you enjoyed this one :) I never got to travel with Canada 3000, got many miles in with Air 2000 (and later worked for them after they rebranded to First Choice), one memory for me was spotting at Manchester when Air 2000 still had it's original livery it was always a guessing game trying to work out if it was an AMM or CMM 757 on approach ;) I'm glad you liked the Air Scandic and Peach Air episodes, I enjoyed making them as they bring back memories for me too :) I know what you mean though, I used to grumble when my airline used to make me deadhead with Ryanair on old 737-200s rather than shiny new A320s with Aer Lingus and these days I'm really chuffed to have flown on so many old 737s while those A320s are still here :)

    Excellent as usual. Had to listen in two parts but it’s been interesting to see what happened, and how the connection with Air2000 played out. It doesn’t seem that European-style holiday airlines really work in North America (which for the US I would expect, but not Canada). Maybe some day...

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, I appreciate that :) It was a bit of a big one today, I was tempted to split it into two parts - a rise and a separate fall but decided that all as one may have been the better option and just hope folks came back for a second sitting ;) The US & Canada is an interesting one for holiday airlines, the US especially. I think it's only really been the last 20 years where it has changed in Canada, with Canada 3000 and Skyservice being the two notable ones.

      Crikey, which airline do you start with for that one.....British Airtours, Airworld, JMC, Air 2000 lol

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm planning on doing one side then the other, so Inter European - Airtours - MyTravel, BEA Airtours/British Airtours - Caledonian, Flying Colours - Airworld - JMC - Thomas Cook. (A later bit would cover the overseas airlines, Scanair, Premiair and FlyFTI) It's such a mammoth task what while I am working on other episodes I am slowly accumulating documents, articles and other bits to go into their respective research packs.
      The issue being that once I publish the first episode I've got to keep going until the end :/

  • @zacktong8105
    @zacktong8105 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is far too much speculation and the markets are far too thin dependent upon seasonal traffic which is short. Today following turn down of the merger with Air Canada Air Transat is operating a very slimmed down service with A-321s with the rest of the wide body aircraft parked for an extended period and Covid shutting down a good deal of vacation travel.

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seasonal traffic is ok as long as you can shift the excess capacity during the quieter months and bring in more to capitalise on the busy periods, that's what has been great between the UK and Canadian carriers over the years though due to consolidation the options of "who to place aircraft with" has been reduced. TUI & Sunwing have a deal, that's pretty much all that is left now :/
      It is a shame that the Air Transat / Air Canada merger has collapsed, more so with it being down to the European Commission (they shouldn't be able to comment on such matters) however in a way I am a little happy, I like Air Transat and should the merger have gone through then they would no doubt have been merged into "Rouge" and disappeared. I am sure that as soon as travel picks up again the A330s will be back, they are great aircraft, I'm still sad that they retired their A310s before I got to have a spin on one :)
