"What I love about rap is it’s like puzzles to me. Words are like puzzles and it’s about trying to see what word can go here and how many words can I make. Like, if I can take a rhyme, like I’m real into the craft of just like. MC’ing.
So, I’m like, how can i make the words at the end rhyme, but maybe take some in between and like sandwich them, make them rhyme inside of the phrase and then come back outside and try to rhyme with the word that I ended on the snare.” - Eminem Interview on The Art of Rap
In this clip from Ice T’s Art Of Rap documentary, the lauded Slim Shady hits upon one of the key factors that has helped to mold both his revered freestyle game and penmanship and that is the willingness to refine your writing.
    Refine Your Rhymes
Although Eminem has pulled off obscene feats in an off the cuff fashion, such as sculpting the dizzying “Rap God” ‘off the dome’ in around six minutes, Em’s adeptness at contorting words at will may be a pleasure to behold, but it’s not a god-given talent.
Instead, it is something that has been honed over time, with Shady’s brain serving as a tireless assembly line of entendres, metaphors and intricate, multisyllabic experiments.
Where others take the path of least resistance, Shady looks at his rhymes from a bird’s eye view.
Meaning that when it’s time to step up to the plate and prove his skills, he’s already done the legwork and created a mental environment that’s conducive to turning out an exemplary 16 before he gets to the mic.
Plus, as he’s made clear, having a wider range of lyrical tricks means that you can retool any word to your will with the right manipulation of syllables.
“Yeah, it’s just in the enunciation. People always say that nothing rhymes with orange and that kinda pisses me off, because I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange.
If you’re taking the word at face value and just say orange, nothing’s gonna rhyme with it exactly.
But if you take it and make it more than one syllable, like -or-ange’, you could say like I put orange, four inch, door hinge in storage and ate porridge with George. You just need to figure out the science.” -Eminem on Anderson Cooper
    Expand Your Vocabulary
Where some see limitations, Em is always seeking to expand his repertoire of tips and tricks and that blends neatly into the next element of Marshall’s approach that separated him from the pack from his days in the Rap Olympics all the way through to his current status as one of the greats and that is the desire to expand his vocabulary.
"Anderson Cooper- I heard that you used to read the dictionary
I want to be able to have these words at my disposal in my vocabulary at all times whenever I need to pull them out, somewhere they’ll be stored and locked away.” - Eminem on Anderson Cooper, 2:03
During his days on the underground circuit, Eminem commanded a fearsome reputation, leaving his fellow MC’s overmatched and outgunned.
“Everybody knew Eminem was the king of all that s**t”, reflected his D12 running mate, Bizarre. He was undefeated. He was like Floyd Mayweather in a rap battle.
Instead of being a matter of luck, Em’s prowess in the freestyle came down to the fact that he approached hip-hop with a scholarly eye, pursuing new words in the same manner that an honor roll student studies for his exams."

Eminem isn't the only one who would pick up a dictionary and treat it like any other book by simply reading it. When I was young, I also would read the dictionary. Some words would lead me to look up the meaning of other words and it would become a snowball effect. My mom was my inspiration. Whenever I would ask her what a word mean, she would tell me to look it up. She would never give an answer. When I would ask how to spell it, she would tell me to "sound it out". This helped me with my chosen profession as an adult. I still read the dictionary, except now, it's not a hardcopy. I'm doing it on the internet.

I think the reason why it always sounds like Em is about to rhyme when he talks, is because he cant shut it off, its not a job, or hobby, or fun for him, it is him, he studies it, eats knowledge, hones it, I can imagine bars are constantly floating around his sub subconscious at all times, he has no off switch, even doing mundane things, his mind wanders to a track he wants to perfect, is most likely a perfectist that thinks the art he creates is never good enough...

My thoughts on using memorized sentence(s) in freestyle rap:
Freestyling involves using your fluid intelligence and ability to come up with clever rhymes that make sense and fit the lyrical environment created in the rest of the freestyle rap (or the opponent's insults in a rap battle) as well as crystallized intelligence in the form of remembering a large arsenal of words, their definitions, their rhymes (and alternate rhymes). As such, he's prepared himself by honing these aspects of his mind, so memorizing phrases to use in freestyling doesn't really bother me since it's basically the same as any other aspect of rapping. Memorizing a phrase is useless unless you know when and where to use it for its best effect, just like any other single word or thought. It's all about using what you know to create something new, and as long as he hasn't written & memorized an entire song, it should be fine. If he did do that, he wouldn't be able to be adaptive or organic with his responses in a battle or his flow in an impromptu freestyle, so it would be pointless anyway.
Some might see using a memorized phrase as going against the whole point of freestyle, since it's not "thought of" on the spot. Then again, neither is the rest of his vocabulary, and yet he uses those. Neither is his ability to freestyle either, since that's been practiced and honed for years before stepping onto a stage, and yet he brings that with him, too. A phrase or a couple of sentences is just another tool in his arsenal, and all that matters is how he uses these tools to create something fluid and responsive in an unpredictable environment. That's the spirit of freestyle, at least in my opinion.

I want to know if he gets the beats to rhyme over first, and fits the lyrics on top?
Or if he just takes whatever lyrics he wrote, and spits it over whatever beat.
Because if he has the beats already, its a bit easier to create a rhythm around that...
If he writes the words first, thats insane because he's coming up with rhythmic elements too!
One of my favorite part about Em's rhymes is how rhythmic and bouncy it is.

He says "puzzle" .. I say "mathematical equation" - I know exactly how his thought process is bc I can totally understand what he means.. I sleep and dream about a verse and spend 3 months thinking about 16 bars until perfected .. I can wake up with half the song done within minutes sometimes after 2 weeks of not being happy with anything I have thought of so far. I get compared to him, logic, mac, and NF.

    Harry Mack is the man

    • @BForceSD
      @BForceSD ปีที่แล้ว

Yo, don't get me wrong, I like Harry Mack, but what he does is at more a simplistic level in order to continuously throw bars on the spot using objects in the scene and the present environment he's performing in for better audience enagegement and bigger reactions, but he always comes back to using his name to transition lines in order to adjust his next bar to rhyme with the words he was provided by the viewers to rhyme with in the beginning, which is something I think he's been working on, but I imagine its better branding for doing what he's doing where he's at currently at and trying to get more exposure. He's broken down his way of doing it one of his videos but he will even tell you he doesn't get close to touching EM in terms of off the top freestyles with extremely sophisticated and complex bars, along with subtle but direct disses that take you a bit to analyze the metaphors and symbolism he tends to use to really have those types of disses hit harder. Still got love for Harry Mack though and hope he continues to grow out his following to get his name on the map.

I can understand his raps. I can't say I like everyone of his songs but he's definitely a go to on my play list.
But I'm old school. I'm from the Era of Big L and Das Efx......Das Efx is serious context driven metaphor rap. If you don't understand the context of what they're saying they will lose you. Its the reason why I even listen to the ones most of you don't... such as Celph Titlted, Vinny Paz, Merkules, NF, Vin Jay, Apathy.....and a host of others. People give Kanye a lot of props...and I'm not going to hate on him but when you hear the guys above, your minds will be blowm.
KRS One said it best...'Rap is something you do but hip-hop is something you live'.....

Em is easily the best rapper ever. Anybody who says he isn’t (not to call out anybody) is either 1.black and lowkey bias towards other black people without realising 2. Doesn’t actually understand rap and music for what it truly is 3. Is a kid. Ain’t never heard anybody who raps as good as him to this day. I don’t even like Eminem’s music, don’t listen to him. Apart from sone of his music for motivation for fights, but it’s no real challenge to pick who is the best. Nobody has even come close
