Omg, I absolutely LOVE Magus of the Library. I have those exact six volumes sitting on my shelf right now and am so deeply awaiting the seventh. The entire world is fantastic, the overarching theme of understanding the world from another's point of view, the simple and beautiful joy of diving into the world between parchment pages, everything about it just spoke so dearly to me as someone who grew up in-between the "Once upon"s and "So it end"s. Absolutely ecstatic to see this magnificent series covered!!!! ♥

This sort of reminds me of "Fushi no Kami: Rebuilding Civilization Starts With a Village". The afterwords from the author are all written from the perspective being from a historian in the world that is compiling the story that unfolds.
Thanks for covering one of my favourite ongoing manga series! I love the level of detail Mitsu Izumi puts into the art and lore of the world, and I wish more people could give this a shot.
Mitsu Izumi even shares extra tidbits on Twitter leading up to volume releases in Japan! Earlier this year, she wrote about the regions of the world and a bit about their respective histories leading up to the main story.
Oh my god, those illustrations are amazing! That level of detail! You know, I'm already reading Witch Hat Atelier, with those gorgeously drawn robes, and this looks very much like something I'll enjoy. The illustrations alone are enough to draw me in. I'll see if I can get my hands on these!

I’m glad to see Magus of the Library getting the attention of people here. I stumbled on its first 2 volume blindly in our local library about 2 years ago, and now i’m excited that Volume 7 is out, just waiting for the English adaptation to be released.

Frankenstein was my favorite book as kid, but the most recent series that has sucked me into it's world is "The ancient magus' bride" it's helped walk through some really deep routed trauma

Yayyy, I love this series ^_^ I'm arabic so I like to see that setting portrayed in magical stories. I was happy to see a hijabi and various other modes of dress. Now I want to grab the physical versions for myself!

I haven't been reading manga for a long time and this one really lit up my interest in reading more again. Will be checking out Witch hat atelier next :)
I would recommend 'Bird in Wonderland' manga if you haven't already, it's about adventuress Isabella Bird and her japanese guide traveling in late 1870s meiji era Japan, learning about the culture and how people lived back then, based on real traveling diaries written by her back then. It's another one I couldn't put down after I started reading it
Isabella Bird in Wonderland sounds great- but unfortunately there doesn't appear to be an English edition? I could only find reference to a bilingual edition (which would be fine) but even HMV Japan does not have it.
Since I can't read Japanese, it seems I won't be able to access it.

That is so strange as there is an official finnish translation of it up to volume 5 now, I didn't even think to check 🤔 but you seem to be right, could only find a fan scanlation of it in english.. That's my bad then, I do hope it gets an official one someday as it really deserves more attention

Britta, I so hope you have read A Bride’s Story by Kaoru Mori. If you haven’t, I can’t recommend it enough based on your manga interests. It is also full of hand-drawn, extremely detailed, breathtaking artwork. Like Magus of the Library and Witch Hat, she focuses on interactions between characters to compel the reader. It also has middle eastern influence which evokes such richness in the textiles and scenery. I think you’d love it and I’d love to see you review it!
Thank you, I do have the first few volumes of A Bride's Story. I'm in the process of slowly acquiring the full set.
Magus of the library reminds me of The Neverending Story and Inkheart in many ways. It's a fantasy story for people who adore fantasy stories.

@@Food4Dogs Only up to volume 4, but hope to get the rest soon! If you enjoy this, I think you might enjoy Nicola Travelling the Demon World. Also love the classics you have there-- you might enjoy the old Paul Creswick adventure books!

I don't know if you've read this already, but I would highly recommend A Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori. I won't say too much about it's story, but it is set on the silk road during the 19th century, and the author's art and attention to detail is astounding.
I have the first 3 volumes and absolutely love it! I'm sure I'll be talking about it in one of my "manga videos" once I've read a bit more.
I did think of Witch Hat when I saw this thumbnail and I think that's just because of the fantasy elements in a BEAUTIFULLY rendered format and (as I suspected) a monthly frequency in japan and online. but I can tell that this is doing something else entirely and I would love both adventures simultaneously and in different ways
I was just able to finally read Volume 7 recently (which spiraled into me rereading the entire series) and was happy to see this video get recommended. There's an absolutely abysmal lack of Magus of the Library content on the internet, so any chance for a 2nd video now that you caught up? The end of Vol.4 made me drop my jaw and Vol.7 was absolutely captivating for how dialogue heavy it was. I would love to hear your thoughts on it all.

This review reminded me to Magi - Labrynth of Magic. It has a great setting and beautiful worldbuilding.
And since you enjoyed the One Piece live action so much, the manga is unparaled in it's scope and one of the greatests worldbuilding in modern literature.

I ordered a copy of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End as soon as vol. 1 became available here (that was back in March last year), but it did not gel with me at all, I'm afraid. I then had a quick look at the anime when that started up and saw that it seems quite faithful to the source material (although I have to say the anime looks visually much better to me than the manga). But I simply have no interest in it. I'm probably one of the few people, bc it has great review scores and almost everybody says they love it.
I'm ofc glad they enjoy it. Sometimes things don't work out, and they didn't for me in this case.
I recommend all the mangas from Mori Kaoru, such as Bride's Story or Emma are my favorites, her art is amazing and stories are great as well.
I have the first couple volumes of Bride's Story! It is lovely. I need to order the next ones ...

I haven't read this manga, but from your review it seems right up my alley! I think you would enjoy "Ascendance of a Bookworm". It is about a woman from our world who loved to read but died in an accident, and whose soul was transported into another world, possessing the body of a 5 year old girl. This world has vague medieval inspiration, and books are considered luxury items, only the nobles have enough money to buy them. Since our protagonist was a bookworm, she starts creating her own books. But, because she's "just a child", the people see her as a genius. Things that were ordinary in our world are considered revolutionary inventions, and she even signs a contract with a merchant guild when she's only 7! The world-building is phenomenal, and it slowly becomes more fantastical when she discovers an hidden power inside her...
