    The game looks fantastic, easily one of the best-looking fighting games on a mainstream home system at the time (i.e. excluding the likes of the Neo Geo). And the sound is great, too! Impressive for a stock 1988 hardware. Just too bad that they didn't include Earthquake due to the developers cheaping out on the cart size (24 meg if I'm not mistaken, could have been 32 or 40 meg and thus included all the characters and moves).
    As someone who grew up with the Neo Geo version, I have to say that, if I didn't have a Neo Geo back then, I'd have been very happy with this version.

    Possibly one of the most technically impressive ports on the system (much more so than the Mega/Sega CD version), and a completely different approach to the SNES version. Big sprites, clever use of colour, and mid frame palette changes to keep the game as colourful as possible. The latter is something I'm surprised that more fighting games didn't do on the system. There were tradeoffs for doing that (CRAM dots), but it could be worth it.
    Unfortunately the cart just wasn't big enough and cuts to the moves were made. It's a shame it couldn't have had a 32Mb cart.

    By no means an arcade perfect port, but pretty repectable on its own compared to its SNES counterpart, with 6-button gamepad support, closed-in (No zooming in the 16-bit porfts) view for more detailed sprites, and uncensored blood/gore compared to the SñES "orange juice" and that awkward control scheme where you had to hold the L/R triggers to do the heavy attacks and zoomed out arena view. Only sad part is that Earthquake was omitted from this version, but the good far outweighs the bad.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Genesis version was cut so much though, all that to get bigger sprites. They should've just gone with a bigger cart size, because the amount of stuff they cut out of this version is astonishing.

    The SNES version despide the tiny graphics had more faithful backgrounds, color and the music was awesome, but the sound was just terrible, the sound of swords clashing was so diluted, and there were no slash sounds. The voices were a bit bad ported, some sounded as if they were inside a can. Genesis was way more solid in that part. I think SNES wins for the graphics, more detailed backgrounds and the music. Genesis because of the size of the characters and the sound, which adds a lot of emotion to the game. Despite Genesis version missed a lot of the original animations, it kept the arcade feeling by keeping the animation of the finger pushing the button rapidly during pressing attacks, the jump of the characters at the beginning of the match and yes, those fatalities. A 50/50 win un this case I believe.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find the more I play the Genesis version, the less faithful in gameplay it feels to the arcade original.

  • @021881mt
    @021881mt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Something has to be said for all the extra animations and details featured here for choosing to go big, the SNES version is extremely cut down graphically when it comes to the characters.
    SNES was great for giving you more of the arcade experience like the flawless cut scenes, win portraits, medium attack, Earthquake, and overall more frames and better backgrounds.
    To do what Sega did though would have required them to scale back tremendously as well, and viewing the arcade sized characters here really make up for what's missing kinda.
    Tie for me but SNES "technically" was better.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @goduskychris Chris Godusky But is the ugliest version of the game for a console (handheld versions look worse due to further limitations of the hardware), and in this day and age looks even worse. Yeah it was ugly back in the day too, but compared to MK 2 (which still looks good) on the Genesis, it is an eyesore to look at.

      The massive amount of cuts they did to this version, they must've used Haohmaru's sword and went to town cutting out things just to fit in the bigger sprites. When you mention the cuts to people, they plug their ears and go "nyah nyah I can't hear you". Very annoying of course, but ultimately brings the game down several notches, but thankfully doesn't kill the game.

    a perfect arcade port for megadrive

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, lots of stuff missing from arcades, do some research. No 16 bit port was perfect, the Sega CD port stunk, the 3DO port was a bit overrated, the Japanese PS1 version suffered from load times. The arcade version is only matched by the PS2 and Wii Sam Sho Anthology, which if memory serves me right, uses the AES version's (except SS 6, which ran on Atomiswave arcade hardware) and not the MVS versions.

    • @Capcomgirl25
      @Capcomgirl25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Bloodreign1 First off, no one is denying the arcade versions is the way to go for most arcade fighters as nothing is cut and everything is as it should. However, for ports that saw cuts still manage to look good on their own merits considering 16-bit console's tech is from the mid 80s compared to more updated 90s tech as seen in the arcades. The only time console ports was better then the Original arcade versions was Contra, Super C, Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon I and II but those are unicorns. When she meant "perfect port" she was referring to the fact it was good for the Genesis' standards and not comparing it to the arcade version. Now had she said this looks nearly as good as its Original then that be a different story. My point is yes these 16-bit ports are not perfect but for console standards they hold up on their own. I mean seriously you are acting as if this is a shitty port of Time Killers and World Heroes that Genesis got LOL.

      More animation and background detail helped the SNES version out. In Charlotte's stage, in the SNES version, you can see the entire background portrait on the wall, in the Genesis one, you can only see the bottom of it, even when both characters are in the air. All the other stages seem to have missing elements in them as well on the Genesis version, like no rain falling in Wan Fu's stage on the Genesis version. Bigger sprites meant that details and animations, as well as Earthquake were axed, such a shame as the game isn't too bad to play on the Genesis, and on the SNES.
