My music teacher left primary school the same time I did , went to an academy the same time as me and will never be forgotten as one of the catalysts of my musical journey. Every kid needs a good music teacher
@@violator7964 Really ? I think he was on about the enthusiasm . As a musician who has been paid for his work , I would have to disagree . All of that effort for a gag about a soap, love it. I almost wonder if this is bill wanting an alpine horn and trying to find a way to make it tax-deductable :)
Maybe it's the fact that I'm watching this at 1.30am having had very little sleep the previous night but the coronation street punchline had me in fucking stitches.
Never seen a telescopic alpenhorn before! Great to go busking with because people will wonder how on earth you manage to travel with such a long thing.
In my view they are one of the under appreciated hands of the 70's. Musical virtusos. Was lucky enough to see them in Torquay back in 1973 (?) ..went out the following day and bought their first album. Liked them ever since
@30Ciaran You can see his lips are perfect on the instrument, no-one would mimic that so damn well just to not blow, especially seeing as how easy that is being played. As undermyskin said, it's actually a good thing to not puff your cheeks out.
Awesome. Jus'wondering, please what make of acoustic steel string guitar Mr Cmdr Hadfield is playing im in this yt feature, please? Fender? C.F.Martin? L.R.Baggs?
@30Ciaran On the contrary, that makes him all the better player. Puffing your cheeks out reduces the high pressure air stream you build up when blowing a wind instrument by allowing it to move up and expand in your mouth more. Any videos of people blowing their cheeks out are bad/inexperienced wind players.
@30Ciaran Dizzy Gillespie did the same thing, but they're both jazz players, and the ideal sound for a lot of jazz musicians is to blur the classical sound that used to exist in their instrument to fit in with the new genre. A good player, doesn't puff their cheeks out for something like this. He's really not miming, especially considering the amount of musical talent he shows on the piano and guitar previously in the program, I would've thought you'd give him more of a chance.
Brass player here. He certainly played the first two little toots while he was making jokes (fracking both pitches, just like he did when he tried to demonstrate the alphorn on QI), but the long notes were actually being played by one of the french horns in the orchestra (the response was probably played by the french horm player right beside them, but with their hand up the bell). You can even see him inhaling at 1:49 while the note is already being sounded. Bill Bailey is one of my favorite comedians, and indeed a very talented musician, but he's not a professional brass player. He was lip-synching here, and the comment section needs to stop being so gullible. He was only pretending to play that alphorn, for comedic effect.
Pardon my ignorance. I have seen a few videos now of bill with the orchestra. Is this an actual event that he does. Or is it a little stint within the orchestra?
I had a Scottie, and they do like to be carried when they've had enough😂. She would howl when my daughter practised her bagpipes, then my daughter would give up playing because between the howling and everyone laughing, it was too ridiculous
Alphorns have been around since at least the 14th century. There may not be any relation to the French Horn, but they're certainly not a Victorian era tourist gimmick.
I hate it when I get a joke then they explain it, I'm like uhh jaa I got it thx. Also hate it when I don't get one and it's not explained .. thanks comments section. Never watched TV
The oddest thing I noticed about this was the conductor conducting the tiny snippets. As a musician I thought that was odd and kind of pointless, even a little unprofessional, like she didn't trust the skilled musicians (who clearly had a score which must have included Bill's segues) to play three notes at approximately the right time. Kinda flattened the joke for me. Although maybe I'm just sore because I sang professional choir for years where the conductor was known for micromanaging everyone, even the organist during organ solos (you can imagine how popular that was)...
That’s quite insulting to both the musicians and the conductor. The trumpet may very well have requested her to keep time, and even if they didn’t, the lack of any other instruments playing makes it much harder to keep time. It’d be weirder for her _not_ to conduct.
@@yakobsoulstorm5187 It's not meant to be insulting, I'm just saying that for me it didn't work. One is allowed to have an opinion about matters of performance, without it becoming a character assassination of the performers. My point was that there's no need to keep time at all as it's just a humorous interjection that only needs to happen at the right point in the joke, not strictly in time, not in time with any other players; therefore conducting it took away the joke for me because it removed the sense that it was "ad hoc" and not entirely scripted.
Swiss dont wear this hats or these clothes, ( maybe tyrol ) and this is not an alpine horn , Alphorn, or cor des alpes, you want to show you a geek, but you are unable
Bill is the mucic teacher every kid should have....
Adore Bill, but there’s a lot more to being a music teacher than this. To being a teacher full stop really.

Plus, the end of it makes a handy place for people to drop money.

Half past seven! Magic! :)
The Alpine Horn: for a perfect average of the Countdown and Superman themes
Bill should have said "The roadie will now give me the horn"...remarkable restraint Bill ;)

Am I the only one who expected the Mastermind theme?

2:00 Coronation Street
another example of the sound of an ensemble of alpine horns: th-cam.com/video/S826jMJLOyQ/w-d-xo.html
You can take an eye out with one of those
That's John from Count Arthur Strong!
Can someone explain why the trumpet cracked everyone up?
It's the theme tune to coronation street, a British soap opera that's been running for about 60 years
@@Thecrazyvaclav That airs at half 7, I think. I'm not sure, I've never watched it.
How to spot someone that isnt British xD
I have actually seen someone busking with this in Geneva.
Ok I'll bite, were they in their own home?

An actual event. (almost 2h of Bill going through the different parts of an orchestra and music).
@jeanpauljh Me too! Near one of the trams and in the train station.
ie gotta get myself 1 of them haha

I'm fairly sure alpine horns were designed for tourists in the 19th century, they're not the precursors of the modern french horn.
Ludovico Maletti I cant remember but I think he’s a comedian...?

this is how the quartet of alpine horns sounds: th-cam.com/video/VC2u6eLboP0/w-d-xo.html
How did you get an entire mariachi band inside that accordion?
@JeroIron Coronation street song
Where did he get the horn
So clever
Wheres Ksi
ACTUALLY the Alpine horn sounds EXACTLY like a Euphonium that has be unrolled. French Horn psssst!
For us not from England, is that trumpet sound a theme song for something again? =P
JeroIron It's the theme to the popular soap, "Coronation Street", regularly on at 7:30pm.
IDK what orchestra this is.
Only sanjay leela bhansali recreate or creares magic with two top dancer
Half past 7 lol
I'm actually swiss.. but why is the dude with the alpine horn wearing a bavarian costume? It has nothing to do with switzerland
So are you Swiss-French, Swiss-German, Swiss-Italian or Swiss-Romansch?
So you can only wear Levi jeans if you're American?
whats the difference ? no wait ... i dont care .
That’s the joke

Wonder if Bill learnt how to play that horn from Sean Lock?
Looked like a huge ‘Church warden’ pipe….
François?
Ja 😂
The bald guy with a long hair
I don't get the joke :(
The tune at 2:00 it the theme of coronation street which used to come on at half past seven.
So you here that tune you know it’s half past seven.
Then I let the Alpine play.
