The vibrato feature is brilliant! String player meets keyboardist. Pure genius of instrument design, all from 1928. There is nothing new under the sun.

A great video demonstration of this lovely vintage instrument!
Please don't forget the Novachord too - this was a 1/4 ton, 163 tube, 100% electronic 72 note polyphonic proto-synth from 1939 which was decades ahead of it's time.
Do a search for Novachord Video if you are interested in seeing a recently restored example of this super rare instrument in action.

funny you should say that, because we have a concert featuring what is purportedly the "North America's largest glass harmonica" next week...
Will see if we can get some video of that in action :)

    Brilliant!
As used by legendary composer, Barry Gray (James Bond theme, Thunderbirds). Gray used it on the soundtrack to the Gerry Anderson film, "Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun"......
Thanks for posting, very, very interesting instrument, I'm sure it also influenced another legend, Dr. Robert Moog........

that's what a synthesizer is. a tone generator. this just a beautiful sounding analog synthesizer :)

An amazing instrument, decades ahead of it's time - like an electronic Glass Armonica.

Actually, I just tried it out..
Simply setting the pitch to increase w/ more pressure gives a very natural vibrato feel.
But still, that Ondes Martenot is an amazing instrument. Especially for it's time!

Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater uses touch sensitive vibrato, im not sure what make his synth is though.

Actually, these days most synths or midi keyboard controllers will do that. Just set an LFO to change the pitch, and set it to do that w/ after touch or w/ a high velocity (if you dont have aftertouch)
Then, press the key lightly, no vibrato, press it harder, vibrato.. press even harder, faster vibrato.
(I know my 10 year old Nova does that, as do the Nords, Korgs, the Waldorf.. like I said at the beginning.. most any modern synth)

The difference is this is not a synthesizer or sampled instrument, it is a tone generator just like a theremin.

are there any reasons why they settle with the left hand controlling the tone and not some kind of foot pedal?
