Please do more gear reviews together. It was really enjoyable watching a comparison video that was about the guitars and not a couple of macho egos trying to outdo each other. I bet the two of you could be just as informative and entertaining reviewing a 10cm patch cable. Thank you. 🙂
Honestly, it sounds muted and like it is floating between the two sounds, and not like a proper sound at all. It has no anything to it. It is just there. Then again. I never play this dry.
With a fender tube clean tone and spring reverb, it can't be beat. Thats why I prefer the Jazzmaster over the Jaguar, even though the Jag looks cooler.
Get the JM jazzmaster and get a set of pure vintage 65s and you have the best jazzmaster available for under $1000. I would also recommend getting a tune o matic with roller saddles too but that’s not required
Thanks for showcasing Nisebelle, spent the day watching her stuff and have been super impressed - i'm a fan now. I sadly had to offload all my guitars to fund my studies but my Squier CV Jazzmaster was the sole survivor and have bonded with it so much now, love it. When I can i'd love to do some hardware swaps but they're just really great quality instruments.
It is so refreshing to see a review where it’s not “which one is better” but “which one do you like more and why” and y’all pointing out where/how other people may prefer one you don’t. There are “crap” guitars, but serviceable ones really are a matter of preferences. PRS makes excellent quality guitars, I just don’t like them. I knew it was good when you nailed my opinion on glossy necks: I don’t like them when my hand sticks, which may or may not be the case. I think you’re the first person I’ve heard call out the input jack problem. It’s so real. I can’t even buy jacks as bad as they use on
That was fantastic - like hanging out with a couple friends (who can absolutely wail!). Love the sounds you brought out of those guitars. Sorry Emily you weren't able to play (hope the finger heals up soon) but have to say Nisbelle your playing was incredible! I really liked how you brought out the J Mascis (the vaunted JMJM) at the end and confirmed that it's really a totally different beast than a traditional jazzmaster. I really love my Classic Vibe JM - question I'm working through is whether to save/trade my way up to the V2 or to upgrade the pups and trem and call it a day :). No wrong answer and in the mean time it's my #1.
honestly, the pickups might be the last thing you should upgrade. my cv jm has the pickup selector failing already and i got it for christmas 😢 im gonna replace all the pots and switches so i can make sure its gonna be reliable
That Squier is really more suited to be paired against the Vintera Jazzmaster verse the Vintera II. Pups in Squier are 60's voiced and the Vintera II has the 50's voiced and it's gonna make them instantly a different flavor and not indicative of which to get or what to expect from Squier vs Fender.
Spot on. I’ll add that I think adding some more use of the trem and a closer look at the bridges would show a bigger difference between these three as well. The stock bridge and tailpiece on my JMJM made it totally unusable as it would pull out of tune instantly, swapping to a fender tailpiece and mustang bridge made a massive difference. The squier vintage tuners also feel like a big step down, and the neck radius is a preference thing that might push people towards one or the other, but all that said all three of these are great for what they are (and their price point) - thanks for the great comparison vid!
The current Squier guitars and basses are some of my favorites to play right now...and not just "for the price" either...they just play and feel really good and I easily connect with them ....Squier is killing it
I bought a Player Jazzmaster back in like 2010, because I wanted one right away, but I could have waited 2 weeks for a J. Mascis one, the old purple sparkle with matching headstock ones and damn if I don't wish I had waited. But I did somewhat blackout the player so that works for me. I've thought about getting a neck from one of the places on ebay that takes stuff apart to sell as parts and get a maple board neck cause black+maple is so sexy. Great video as always. Glad I discovered your channel recently and even cooler that you're in Ohio, I'm in Cbus and grew up near Dayton and Springfield.
I got the same 40th anny Jazzmaster last year on a killer Black Friday deal. Liked it, but then proceeded to put major upgrades into it. Electronics, pickups, Descendant vibrato, Stay Trem bridge, some cosmetics. Now I love it!
@7:47.. what finger position is that?? Looks like Middle finger on 6th string 4th fret, Index finger on 5th string 3rd fret, and ring finger on ?? I can't tell, and what string and fret is the pinky on?? When I play these notes they sound horrible but when you play them they sound magical. Can you please show us what finger positions you are using?
Cool review vid. ProAudioStar had some bonkers Squier blowouts over the past year or so. Copped the 40th Anv JM in LPB with the neck binding and block inlays for like $300. Before that, with a tax return one of their blowout sales allowed me to outfit my band with all 3 of the "skyburst metallic" Contemporary Series models for like half retail, now we look super profesh for the 2 or 3 gigs a year we play 🤣
Thank you! Both are really good guitars but that Vintera ii sounds absolutely incredible. Debating which one to get. I love the desert sand color, too. I think i would be happy with either.
i bought the contemporary tele and debated getting that squier jazz from proaudiostar too and I wish i got the jazzmaster but I love the contemporary tele. The prices were insane like 6months ago on that site and they never restocked any squiers since haha
just bought a "used" SB vintera ii jazzmaster. I must say that I'm not disappointed : looks good, confortable to play, really good pickups... thanks for the review that helped me make my choice :)
Thanks for the video. Both great guitars, but I’m impressed how the Squier sounds at the price point. You need exponential spending for incremental improvements, but the Fenders seem like less hum/noise from better shielding. It comes down to budget and how important the subtle differences are. The tremolo on my Squier isn’t great… I think Fender and Squier ship with 9s. I replaced mine on my Squier 60s Classic Vibe with 10s and I’m going back to 9 because I prefer the lower tension
I think the "witch hat" knobs were a CBS thing. Introduced in 1965-66 when they introduced the block and binding neck's on the Jazzmaster. Not sure if the dot and binding (1965) had these....
They all sound good. I got the 40th anniversary Squier one. Yes, I got mine on sale, but in the seafoam. I have no need to change the pickups yet. But if I do, I will get some Jazzmaster pickups to put in. Right now, it doesn't seem to need it.
I have bought Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Jazzmaster 2nd hand that had Vintera pickups in it. Cool guitar, interesting sounds. Compared to what I hear in this review - mine sounds more like the Vintera for sure. I had to lower neck pickup a bit to have balanced sounds on both pickups. Thanks for a review!
i used 0000/super fine steel wool to very lightly take the gloss off my vintera jazz bass neck. it's still not as good as the nicest satins i've felt (though they aren't all good) but it's definitely an improvement to me.
I brought back a "Jazzmaster Junior Collection" from Japan a few months back, and it's a dream come true for me. It's smaller, MUCH lighter and has a 24" neck like a jaguar. the pickups sound excellent and the paint is a satin matte finish. i don't know why they called them "Junior" because they're only 94% scale, it's not for kids... if you can get your hands on one, i bet you'll love it.
MIJ guitars are premium for a fraction of american profs price point. I wish we have more fender MIJ models here in NA/Canada. Was lucky to get Boxer telly which is really good but man these Jazzmasters sound sooooo damn nice. That mid position though
Loved this! Shopping for a Jazzmaster but maybe more exciting for me is I spent hours learning what was being played, awesome and inspiring! What more can you ask for?
I wonder what the ohm reading is on the pick ups are ,you can do this on the jack and with a cheap meter... Id also be curious what the body woods are , I guess the fender is alfer and the squier is popular? Great video , I'm currently waiting for a tele with the p90/jazz pick ups to arrive should aound similar. 😅
Pro Audio Star are super cheeky, they circumvent MAP laws by exploiting the "open box" factor - as soon as they open the box, they're free to sell the guitar for whatever they want to, rather than the MAP set by the manufacturer. Here in the UK, we don't have those MAP laws, so our retailers are constantly fighting for the lowest price. Works out well for the consumer, but really stings the stores - especially smaller stores that can't afford to take a hit.
Great video. I recently purchased my first offset, a Squire 40th Anniversary (just like yours). I paid about $400. Currently, it's getting a setup job at Mike & Mike's. So far, I like it. I'm trying to get used to the JM-style pickups. a little trebly for my taste. I like the Vintera II, but not enough to pay the extra bucks, at least not at this time. Maybe somewhere down the line.
For me, the secret to a Jazzmaster is to use the heck out of the tone knob. My JM bridge pickup sounds amazing with the tone set in the 5-6 range. For the neck pickup, I drop the volume to 9 to tame just a little highs without losing sparkle. The secret to the rhythm circuit is to use it with fuzz 😀
Nice video, I have had same issue with P90 in an Epiphone, don’t like them cleanish. So the J Mascis would need new pickups for me I think. The fender is nice.
Such a wonderful coincidence that you review all three of the jazzmasters i’m currently deciding between. Well, looks like i have to make space for a Vintera this weekend ^^ Great video ☺️
@@wavetoearf yeah i got the Vintera II in Blue, love it! It’s no problem at all with the radius, super comfortable and no problem with bending etc, not with proper setup :)
Really great video you two! I enjoyed that so much! I've had a J Mascis JM for a few years and love it. I really did want something that was closer to a traditional JM but still felt good like my JMJM. I was thinking of buying a second one and doing a pickup swap, when I saw the 40th anniversary squire go in sale about a month ago for $250. I figured it was worth a shot. And it is fantastic! I'm so glad to have it. Thanks for doing this comparison. You can hear the refinements in the sounds of the Fender over the squire however, I really liked the neck sounds on the Squire better on both lead and rhythm circuits. I'm curious what it would sound like to switch out the bridge pickup on the squire with fender? I also like the matte finish better. For the price difference I'll stick with the squire. Super fun video to watch! And Nisbelle always looks so happy when she's playing, it's a beautiful thing to see that kind of joy.
@@BryanHRBrodie yeah I had actually ordered one from fender’s site and paid. I got an email the next day saying they were out. Hopped on GC’s site and grabbed one there. So glad I didn’t miss out.
I’ve got a Fender J. Mascis Jazzmaster (MIJ) The Jazzmaster is unique because of the string length from nut to vibrato, the wide wound single coils, the funky rhythm / lead circuitry, and the 1 Meg pot.
Apparently Fenders come with 10s and Squiers with 9s. I played several Squier Classic Vibe models (JM, Jag and Strat) last week side by side with their Fender counterparts and I noticed the string tension feel too. The shop clrk confirmed the string gauge difference. That said, for a casual player the Squier CVs are weirdly and perfectly good. I'd have a very hard time justifying the 300% price increase to get the Fender.
Oh geez I just realized that If you get the squier and put black pickups and guard on it it looks like the prototype that norms had for years 🤤I’ve always wanted that guitar somehow
Great and fun video! I think some important differences to consider between the Squier and Vintera are that the Squier has a modern 9.5 radius, bone nut, and truss rod access at the head. Vintera has 7.25” radius, plastic nut, and truss rod access at the heel. For the price of the Vintera you could buy 2 or 3 Squiers which have better specs if not the Fender logo.
I think they're pretty different. The amp pro ii is WAY more modern, with more action on the vibrato and a series switch where the rhythm circuit usually is. I personally love both but the vintera ii is so special to me right now. Listen to some demos and think about what pickups you prefer, too.
@kanahmal they tend to do runs of pedals from their website. I'd sign up for the email list or even ask if they have plans to make more. It's a pretty awesome pedal. There's one on Reverb but it ships from NL reverb.com/p/montreal-assembly-too-positive?gspk=Z2V0b2Zmc2V0NzQwNw&gsxid=XX7q3kABadcaRv&ps_partner_key=Z2V0b2Zmc2V0NzQwNw&ps_xid=XX7q3kABadcaRv&
@@GetOffset I'll ask em, I was mostly excited about them being $100 as I currently have my heart set on an Electronic Audio Experiments Limelight which I feel is similar but more expensive.
cool stuff. one day i'll get me a jazzmaster with the standard pickup config (mine has a humbucker in the bridge, so it doesn't do the normal jazz thing).... that squier seems pretty neat, id' get that if i weren't currently over my guitar limit.
The J. Mascis Jazzmaster pickups are more like P90's than Jazzmaster pickups. I prefer them to the P-90's I have on another rig and you can get them for really inexpensively compared to high end P-90s if you are putting a partscaster together.
What an AWESOME review not to mention such goood guitar playing. Your tone’s, cadence, and just “feel” for the moment was dope! I’ve been on the hunt for a really good JM. I had a J Masic squier but it wasn’t for me! Have you ever played the old Mexican classic series JM’s or the new American vintage ones?
Dam I really love jazzmasters now I don’t know what I was thinking before . Keep up the great work . I don’t know if you’ve discussed this yet but when I was playin shows back in the day it gets hot as hell in Australa and my hands would get sweaty and sticky yes gross . But got a way around this ?
Someone does do that from time to time! I was doing it for awhile but didn't find it made a big difference in terms of bounce or time spent watching@@Dungeon_of_Regret
j mascis said he loves loud guitars and abrasive, so it makes sense. That squier is great for noise rock, if u have ever listened to dinosaur jr. j mascis's band for those who dont know, its emotionally loud and in yuh face tamed by j .mascis soft gentle singing
I don't know the name of your guest star, but their "offset channel" has been TH-cam recommended to me a bunch. They are a sick guitar player (as are you, my friend "Get Offset"). I'd love to hear a proper song from the two of you. Great video, great vibes. PS: The J Mascis does sorta sound like a fart machine...too much bass.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for no tired, annoying blues. Also, I'm pretty sure this video has me fiending for that vintera JM now Edit: I just went out and traded in my player squire for a vintera 60s jazzmaster lol thanks guys!
@@GetOffset sorry Its a band that used to make pretty good like midwest emo, there was a part where Nisebelle played that overdriven tone that sounded much like something Remo Drive specifically would play. Could just be same key sorta thing.
@@UnderTheZero Haha I actually LOVE Remo Drive! Definitely a good chance that I unintentionally snuck in one of their riffs while I was plucking around!
Hi girls! Thanks for this awesome demo. If I were to play say, Placebo covers, which of the Mascis or 40th anniversary would you recommend? (like in this sound: th-cam.com/video/LnUXxfUSyMg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_EK7KIY_fUCJVyYb&t=261)

The playing is so much better than most of the blues rock riff bro videos on youtube...subbed.
Thanks for the sub! Make sure to subscribe to Nisebelle's channel for more of her awesome playing!
Jazzmaster middle position is THE premiere sound in all of guitardom.
Robert Smith's first Jazzmaster middle position was great. Of course, it was a Top 20 single coil that he put in there, but still.
Honestly, it sounds muted and like it is floating between the two sounds, and not like a proper sound at all. It has no anything to it. It is just there. Then again. I never play this dry.

I agree. Got me the seafoam 40th a few weeks ago and after trying to buy a few more they emailed saying they have been discontinued
@@BryanHRBrodie yeah I had actually ordered one from fender’s site and paid. I got an email the next day saying they were out. Hopped on GC’s site and grabbed one there. So glad I didn’t miss out.
I’ve got a Fender J. Mascis Jazzmaster (MIJ)
The Jazzmaster is unique because of the string length from nut to vibrato, the wide wound single coils, the funky rhythm / lead circuitry, and the 1 Meg pot.
Great video! I enjoyed every second🙂. My J Mascis is my favorite guitar that I own.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Squier sounds good, but the Fender sounds that much better, at least to my ears.
100% agree
Indeed
Fender Vintera 60's JM modified. Best deal, trem is close to the bridge. Nice break angle, no string slipping off the bridge saddles. Your welcome
Liking the cozy vibe here. Loved Jazzmasters but my body never seem to agreed with one.
Great playing!
You should check out her channel and her music!
Yeah! I really love offset jazzmaster and jaguar squire is really great I make songs with this
Emily, is the neck on the Vintera II chunky, or like a modern C, etc.?
sounds amazing!!
Oh geez I just realized that If you get the squier and put black pickups and guard on it it looks like the prototype that norms had for years 🤤I’ve always wanted that guitar somehow
Oh wow!
Let me tell you one thing. The squire 40th jazzmaster is the best!🎸💜
Great and fun video! I think some important differences to consider between the Squier and Vintera are that the Squier has a modern 9.5 radius, bone nut, and truss rod access at the head. Vintera has 7.25” radius, plastic nut, and truss rod access at the heel. For the price of the Vintera you could buy 2 or 3 Squiers which have better specs if not the Fender logo.
liking 9.5 over 7.25 is not a "better spec" but rather a subjective preference either way, the fender has the superior specs, but remains overpriced.
Question, I'm hesitating between this one and the American pro2. Having tried both what are your insights ? :)
I think they're pretty different. The amp pro ii is WAY more modern, with more action on the vibrato and a series switch where the rhythm circuit usually is. I personally love both but the vintera ii is so special to me right now. Listen to some demos and think about what pickups you prefer, too.
@@GetOffset Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it! For build quality and playability you have a preference between the 2?
Not a clear preference, no. More of a "what's my mood today" kind of thing. The Vintera ii is newer, so obviously it's getting a lot of play.@@d_cl
@@GetOffset Thanks :)
Maybe I missed where you said it, but what overdrive/distortion/fuzz where you guys using? Getting some Sonic Youth tones.
Montreal Assembly Too Positive!
@@GetOffset nice, watched your review of it, got excited and then found out it was not in production :p
You need to use Martin Guitar polish on those Glossy necks to get rid of the stickys.
I'll check it out!
Martin Polish? Like Martin guitars polish? Thx
Great video! Was 15:30 - 16:30 a real song or just free play?
The J. Mascis Jazzmaster pickups are more like P90's than Jazzmaster pickups. I prefer them to the P-90's I have on another rig and you can get them for really inexpensively compared to high end P-90s if you are putting a partscaster together.
How would these compare to the J-Mascics JM?
Sincere question, did you watch the video to the end? I hope that will give you the info you need!
@@GetOffsetI didn’t the first time around but I finally did lol thank you!
@@nickrosa1334 happy to help!
Check out more of Nisebelle's videos!
15:30 what song is this?????
Man I've wanted a JM JM for a while. I have a Squier CV, but I kinda want a JM JM for the TOM bridge, which will let me run lighter roundwounds.
Please add timestamps going forward!
I don't really have the time to do that for every video.
You can add the time stamps for her and help out around here!
@@GetOffset understand for sure, it helps for the longer ones
Someone does do that from time to time! I was doing it for awhile but didn't find it made a big difference in terms of bounce or time spent watching@@Dungeon_of_Regret
Awesome video, subbed
Awesome, thank you!
Nice review
Great review! Think it would still be the Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster for me if I got one :)
Nice review ! what is the string gauge you use on jazzmasters ?
I use 10s
Thats the most interesting slide I've ever seen...
What fuzz was used for the Squier?
This was the only dirt used in this video: mtlasm.com/product/too-positive/
@@GetOffset Thanks!
Oh wow! Moving up in the world!
I'd love to hear some actual clean tones. Like, ones that don't break up. My cleans are clean clean.
j mascis said he loves loud guitars and abrasive, so it makes sense.
She was looking at the neck the whole time, kind of like what I was saying for you do. Love you all and have a blessed day!!!
Which fuzz is that?
Iirc this was the mtl.asm too positive
The bonus comparison JMJM was a nice touch. Ultimately the Squier really held its own against the others, particularly the neck pickup.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for no tired, annoying blues. Also, I'm pretty sure this video has me fiending for that vintera JM now
Edit: I just went out and traded in my player squire for a vintera 60s jazzmaster lol thanks guys!
And you snuck a hold steady riff in there
0000 steel wool is the finest for that rubbery feeling poly.
did i hear some remo drive in there or am i losing it? xD
I don't know Remo drive
