    I have had attitude about people that seem to want a recipe to follow. Then I had to realize that I’m actually very lucky to have time to explore, try and fail, learn and grow. I think many people feel a need to get started selling ASAP.
    We all have a unique journey. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I find I need to strike a balance between seeing what other’s are doing and just trying to develop my business. 💚 I try also to focus on successes and things I get from my business that isn’t monetary.

    Erica, When a person sees something great it's hard not to want to do the exact same thing. For example I love your Etsy site. Everyday I struggle to have a site as appealing but not a duplicate.

      Awww thank you so much!
      And I TOTALLY understand, it’s so hard to not want to duplicate the things we love ourselves! Finding your own unique brand can take some time ❤️❤️

    I really enjoyed this episode, I have had this happen to me a while back to the point where I almost dropped off of social media & gave up my Etsy shop, because this person literally stalked me on every online platform and eventually things got to the point where I was dreading doing anything ( they also had a ton of followers & a clique of just really mean ppl) that I almost threw it all away people don’t realize when they literally take everything you’ve created and make it their own how devastating & detrimental that can be to the original creator. Thank you for this 🥰

      My husband tells me that I have to just let it go and keep going but its so hard. When you have put so much time, energy and sometimes tears into creating something and then someone comes along and just takes it with nothing invested into it, its heartbreaking.

    Great to hear your perspective.. it can be so frustrating to be copied 😢.

    So guilty of wanting to copy! I have that feeling when I see things that I love! Even from you! and I am like ugh I dont want to copy you or anyone else and I definitely do keep that in the back in my mind. I do always ask myself is "Ok what do i really love about it?" I try to take it apart like I did with label designs I been working on. I play around with the idea until my gut/heart says yea thats it. Its not easy because copying is easier for sure but thats not how to build a good authentic brand at all.

    I was using tins and went to black glass and realized you are using similar gear. Not intentional at all! I started 4 years ago with tins and then decided they were kinda cheap looking so I found the black glass with bamboo lids. I’m sure in terms of vessels, a lot of people have good taste like me and I would not care if they used them. Just don’t copy the label etc. you have wonderful tips and I have learned a lot from you. I watched your shipping video that was very helpful!

    This was great. I’m just starting out still learning how to make the candles. I do have an idea of what I want my labels to be I really don’t want to copy anyone I would like to stand out and be different

    Erica, thank you for this podcast. I'm guilty of being a copycat. I have amended my behavior. I needed this today. I'm a healer & artisan. I live in a coastal magical redwood forest in Northern California. My business name has apothecary in the name. I have been having fun creating labels that are artwork. Just came to me on how toads healing items to my vessels.

      Just a question. How do you get away with using apothecary in your biz name in CA? I was told it is illegal to do that but I see people doing it all the time. I would like to use it in my name as well, but I am afraid to do it.

      The state agency is the California Board of Pharmacy,
      "There is a California law that requires that only drugstores can use certain titles--drugstore, apothecary, there's a list of about six," points out Virginia Herold of the Pharmacy Board.
      Specifically, Section 4343 of the California Business and Professions Code states, "No building shall have upon it or displayed within it or affixed to or used in connection with it a sign bearing the word or words 'Pharmacist,' 'Pharmacy,' 'Apothecary,' 'Drugstore,' 'Druggist,' 'Drugs,' 'Medicine,' 'Medicine Store,' 'Drug Sundries,' 'Remedies,' or any word or words of similar or like import; or the characteristic symbols of pharmacy; or the characteristic prescription sign (Rx) or similar design, unless there is upon or within the building a pharmacy holding a license issued by the board."
      1. No person shall carry on, conduct or transact a business under a name which contains as part of the name the words "pharmacist", "pharmacy", "apothecary", "apothecary shop", "chemist shop", "drug store", "druggist", "drugs", "consultant pharmacist", or any word of similar or like import, unless the place of business is supervised by a licensed pharmacist.

      Aw I’m so glad you love listening! You’re in the “overwhelming” stage where you have so many options and ideas and it can be a lot! So take your time and write a LOT down and come back to it week after week to see if it still is an idea that “sticks”! ❤️

      I have notebook after notebook of things I’m trying to get straight. I just truly loved hearing the things you were saying today. It would really bother me if I saw my creation on someone else’s work. I really have to think about that because it’s so easy to see someone’s stuff and as you said.. just love it so much! I will be very careful.

    I really dont know how you do it! I see so many peoples candles and branding and I immediately know that they watch your videos adamantly. Ive had a few people in my area that quickly became candle makers once I started getting my name out there and it was so obvious that they were trying to copy what I do. The style and even down to the packaging. I get so angry but I know I just have to overlook it.

    • @MemoryBoxCandleCo
      @MemoryBoxCandleCo  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can be hard but it's best to just keep creating and focusing on your brand! Unfortunately we cannot control what others choose to do :/ I used to get more upset over it and now I don't even notice at all unless it's pointed out to me because my brain is focused on a million things a day lol

    There a LOT of copycats in the candle space. The worse part is they will flat out lie when called out.

    Omg.. this is so real.. it has happened with me..I know that person personally who has always constantly copied everything I did with my business, in my Insta page, every post, product photo styles, even the captions are the same, the Etsy listings, the labels style, the label makers that I was using etc etc. I was so frustrated and I blocked that person… most interesting part is that even though she had copied me she is still not able to make a single sales on my Etsy page.. 😅

    I loved today’s episode! I have found myself having to search for creators that are located in different locations for inspiration. I was wondering, why did almost everyone on my feed have very similar styles( not exact)? well turns out TH-cam was only showing me creators in my area. Which meant we have very similar thoughts on style & possibly fed off of each other for inspiration. Lol 😂 🤦🏽‍♀️ Yes, it’s very hard but doable to have your own uniqueness when it comes to styles & ideas. Plus it just feels better. 😊

    • @MemoryBoxCandleCo
      @MemoryBoxCandleCo  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Oh that’s so interesting!!
      Honestly, complete 100% unique ideas that have never been done is REALLY hard. But I think there’s a difference between taking little bits of inspo from 10+ brands to incorporate into your own brand, vs trying to replicate another brand entirely!

  • @sophielafleche3803
    @sophielafleche3803 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Being unique is definitely difficult. I feel like every time I have an idea for something and I'll google it to make sure it's not already out there - it already is. Like I would have loved to make candles themed around my love of books and coffee. But with the BookTok craze - there's a ton of that already out there. So, do I abandon making anything book or coffee themed for the sake of remaining unique? Or just take a different approach to it? And like you said - sometimes we fall hard for something we see already existing and have to make sure it's not going to influence our own work.
