  • In an effort to be more comfortable during our Pacific NW winters, with the freedom to go drop the hook even if it's freezing out, we installed a new Wallas 40 Dt Forced Air Diesel Heater from Scan Marine Equipment in Seattle. We compared the Wallas to Espar and Webasto, and while the other two have slightly higher BTU output, the Wallas was by far more energy efficient with better fuel economy. It's also known as the quietest of the marine forced air systems, which any neighboring boats will appreciate!
We're very happy with the performance of our Wallas heater. You can hardly hear it running from outside the boat. And while in our slip we no longer rely on electric heat to stay warm. Looking forward to year round cruising! For more information on the full line of Wallas heaters, stoves and ovens visit Scan Marine Equipment at www.scanmarineusa.com

I like your choice, I use a Newport by Dickinson propane furnace in my Almar primarily because there's no diesel aboard. Wondering if we'll see you at the upcoming boat show in Seattle, I'll be there filming the first weekend.

I have one of these and find it will only work for a few days then there is somehow always an issue. Possibly blow out from the fresh air intake.. Not really sure why. as all you get is a blinking light to tell you that your furnace has stopped working. You must then go through the start up procedure which can take upwards of 15 minutes before finding out it has failed to start.. Every thing has been checked out, new filter and such..

Hi Alex - Sorry for the delay in responding, but have you either spoken to or taken the unit in to the guys at Scanmarine in Seattle?

Great video! Gotta question: Although the Wallas seems like an great unit, Wallas states that their heaters aren't intended for live-aboard use and implies that such use will void the warranty. Did you find this warning not a serious concern for your installation?

Hi James - I'm sorry we never saw your comment before now! (I thought we would receive comment notifications.) To answer your question, we did know but after talking with the folks at Scan Marine felt it would not be a serious concern. We do get the unit service annually, which keeps us confident in the heater's continued performance. As of today, it still runs great!

Thanks for the video, just in the process of buying one of these and wondering how to plumb in the fuel supply without having to drain, disconnect and remove the diesel tank to cut the hole for the dip tube. How did you go about this?

Hi Bernie - The fuel draw typically comes from the top of the tank. Call the guys at Scan Marine and they can walk you through that part of the installation. It was pretty easy!

Get a chinese diesel heater, tiny fraction of the cost and the quality isn't bad as it's a copy of the German webasto and eberspacher heaters that cost near 10 times the amount.

I don't believe these heaters are rated for continuous service. Not for livaboards. Perhaps I'm wrong ?

Hi Stephen - It's true they are not necessarily marketed to liveaboards, but it has not been an issue for us. We typically turn the unit on in late Fall and essentially leave it on until late Spring. We do shut it down if we leave the boat for an extended period of time, though (Thanksgiving trips, Christmas vacations, etc.).
