How to replace Ignition Switch on R50 Mini Cooper and stop the Wipers from running on on their own

  • This Video explains how to replace the Ignition Switch on R50 Mini Cooper.
    As mentioned during the Video, the reason why the Ignition Switch needed to be replaced was because the Car wouldn't start. But prior to that, the vehicle had developed a strange problem; the Windshield Wipers would start working on their own and they wouldn't turn off till the Vehicle was stopped and the Ignition Switch was turned to the Off Position.
    Sometimes the Wipers would turn on as soon as the Ignition Switch was turned to the On Position, either just the Front Wipers or Front and Rear at times.
    Extremely annoying situation, and embarrassing to be driving on a clear day with all the Windshield Wipers going at full speed for no reason.
    At that point there were 2 Options:
    1- Baptize the car by the name "Herby" and paint the Number 53 on the Doors with racing Stripes and live with the problem or...
    2-Repair the problem so the car doesn't act like it has a mind of its own.
    As previously mentioned, while researching the issue, it appeared that it is not the Body Control Module that is the cause of the problem but a Faulty Ignition Switch.
    A week later: No remaining issues with the Wipers, the Ignition Switch was the cause of the Windshield Wipers turning on by themselves and why they would run all the time and wouldn't turn off.

    Easy and painless. This is exactly what my R53 needed. Couldn’t figure it out. Changed the starter then the clutch safety switch. But this was it eventually. Thanks for the help.

    Thanks for the video, perfect example of how to do it. Our Mini wouldn't start( no sound or anything when turning the key), we were told that it was probably the Starter motor, so I replaced the Starter and there was still no ignition, I came across this video and ordered and replaced the ignition switch and presto, it started. Thanks again for the in depth video.

    Great video & thank you so much. My mini was doing the same thing plus radio didn't turn on like normal unless you pressed the power button, when I'd turn the car off the radio stayed on, AC wouldn't turn on & the round airbag light with the person in it would flicker.
    Fingers crossed mini is this ignition switch as well. I have a new starter motor coming too just in case.
    Again great video going through this simple but extremely important issue.

    Great video. I had my ignition switch fail suddenly, left me stranded. How BMW can make a simple switch fail is beyond me. But then their parts are poor quality. Also, BMW are the only manufacturer where I've bought new parts from them that have been faulty.

    • @MrEaangelo
      @MrEaangelo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Carlyle what Iv found is that the switch itself is good it goes bad where the metal goes into the switch from the lock cylinder the plastic wears out that turns the ignition switch. In my book is pretty cheap. If you take the switch out and use a small flat head screw driver it will probably start because your taking up the slack in the plastic. FYI lol

    Mine will run the wipers as well as lose power to the climate control and stereo. If it does this prior to starting, it will not start until I get the wipers to stop. I traced it to a single wire running into the ignition switch. The wire was longer than the others in the harness and had a bad crimp in it, but by wiggling it I could get power back to the climate controls and the wipers would stop. I ended up cutting it down to the crimp, reattaching the connector, and running the wire back into the harness connection. The issue is about 95% better, but occasionally it will run the wipers one quick time when I first start it, and the blower motor will run at half power for a few minutes after starting. Do you think replacing the switch is the fix I need or is the issue still in the wire? I'm wondering if the wire's insulation might be broken further down in the harness and it is arcing between other wires, or if maybe the switch is just going bad and improving the connection of the wire just bought me a little bit of time.

    Great video and makes it appear very simple. One question I would have is - what exactly was the failure mode? When the key was turned, was there no activation at all of the starter solenoid, i.e. no "click" when the key was turned, as you would notice if the cause were a flat battery?

    • @simonrichards5430
      @simonrichards5430 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      666dogg666 on my 2005 Cooper S, the symptom/s were “all lights on/no starter” when the key was turned to ignition. Also had an intermittent issue (while driving) where radio would go off/ABS came on/power steering stopped while driving. Resolved all with replacing the switch. Job took 15mins being careful
