The ending footwork with that INSANE speed is phenomenal. Nowdays skaters wave their arms and twist their bodies and feet around at a fifth of that speed and call it something. I call it a mess.
I love, love, love her footwork. So much speed and accuracy. So much better than the endless, boring footwork we see today. But today it's all about getting those levels!
If Yuka had had nailed her Lutz in the short program (she popped it into a single), she likely may have been on the podium with the free skate she gave here.
That's very possible. Her marks were a bit conservative because she skated in the second to last group as opposed to the final one. Her marks could've and probably would've been higher if she had skated later.
Surya was a great skater as well. Her performance was not as good as it could have been. I really enjoyed her and still watch videos of her skating.@@taigaforest2009
@@taigaforest2009 Surya singled her triple lutz and fell on her second attempt at these Olympics. I don't see how she could have challenged for a gold medal.
@@taigaforest2009 That was in Nagano four years later. And she missed a bunch of jumps in that program. She threw the backflip because she knew her program was not going to move her up in the standings.
I just watched Surya Bonaly's performance after reading they tied for 1st place. The judges should have awarded them both gold medals and feel there was some bias. And yes you can have to greats perform in the same competition so they should have both won the gold.
This is her performance at the Olympics at Lillehamer and she didn't won any medals unfortunately. The legendary Oxana Baiul won gold.Yuka Sato won over Bonaly at World Championship 1994.
@metsdudenj: It was meant to be a flip, b/c otherwise, as you said, it would have required a combo. She just took off with the wrong edge (something that used to be done constantly under the 6.0 system).
@SexyLiLLeilaniMya Hmm, I thought the edge was off a little since she did tap into it, I kinda thought it was a flip jump, but if it was a lutz shouldnt have there been a combo with it?
Skating from the penultimate group, the skaters besides Witt would have had to make more than 1 major error (fall) before Sato could have placed higher...
Oh, man, where was that triple lutz in the short program? If she'd made her combination in the short program, she probably would have won a medal. This free skate was terrific, but certainly would have received better marks if she'd skated in the final group and the judges could directly compare her to the top 4 ladies.
Surya made a couple mistakes in this competition. Despite of her pain and blaming about the broken system of figure skating, judges were right. She screwed-up. Face it sore looser.
After watching Oksana Baiul Skate nothing can ever compare, this Skate felt very rushed no grace and poise at all it was all about the technique for her no artistic flare imo a very forgettable skater
Opposite in fact. Oksana was rushing to keep up with her music, she was sloppy and junior level. Plus only three clean triples. It was very sad to see because her coach did not help her move to the next level.

By far one of the greatest female footwork skaters ever and I've been watching skating since the 70s.
My God, the footwork at the end was flying down the rink at mach-speed.
I love, love, love her footwork. So much speed and accuracy. So much better than the endless, boring footwork we see today. But today it's all about getting those levels!
I really enjoy her skating. She has great speed and that makes her fun to watch. She does have great qualities in her skating. 🍃💜⛸💐
Haven't watched this performance in YEARS. I just have to say - WOW.
What a fantastic performance. The best of all.
Quality 🤗
Athleticism + grace + fun to watch 😃
No, the Russian split before the 3Sal made it a jump sequence, so it was counted.
When it comes to footwork, Yuka is the queen!❤

She had really beautiful spins, for being under the 6.0 system, which did'nt pay any attention to the spins!
That was AWESOME
She deserved gold. She is amazing!
Surya Bonaly deserved Gold not her

@@gk891 She landed a backflip on one foot.. Which is the first in history so I don’t see how that doesn’t deserve a gold medal by itself

Yuka didn't let what went on before she the ice get to her. She went out there and gave it her all.
great skate! great legs! great skills!

how did Bonaly with a fall beat this considering the quality of skating and that it was also skated cleanly?
the judges tended to hold marks back for the final group... especially at the Olympics. It even happens under the ISU system!
Because Bonaly’s technical program was better that Yuka’s.
this program was better than oksana's, kerrigan's and bonaly's...so why was she fifth?
She stumble on several occasion and the spin is not as strong as the other skaters like Bonaly.
She was fith in all around because she hadn’t a great SP, she was 7th there.
So Yuka gets 5.5 for the technical mark, while Oksana Baiul gets 5.8. Makes sense.
Yuka was really third in free skate. Oksana, down the list, out of the top five. The cheque was in the mail for her!
Surya should have won the gold and the tie should not have been left up to a coin toss process, both were great.

She should have gotten better scores than this. Awesome skater!
i think the marks are appropriate. she hopped some of her landings. a hand down on the triple flip. the marks are accurate.
@@michaeljj43 Her hand did not touch the ice therefore no deduction.

those thighs.....
She deserved the bronze
The whole time I watched this, seeing how stiff and awkward her arms are, I thought of how profoundly more artistic Sasha Cohen is
