There's a lot of talk about the Wii U version of Sonic Boom, but what about the 3DS version? Is Shattered Crystal a mess or a bright spot for the series? Find out in our in-depth review!

Shattered Crystal decided that, instead of being stupid and unfinished, to be short but finished and at least enjoyable, which worked on its favor.
You know there's a problem with a game series when the Handheld version of the game is better than its console counterpart.
Now for those of you who only play handheld games only, no offense to you, but in this case, it is kind of sad that the handheld Sonic Boom pretty much blows the console version out of the water because they simply follow the only Sonic formula that actually works.
Wow Pokemon must be really messed up.
Lion Day But he has a point. Plus, Pokemon will never work as good as being a handheld game, because of the compatibility and the "trade pokemon, battle everywhere" part of the game (DO NOT TAKE ONLINE INTO CONSIDERATION).
Pokemon can be seen as one of the very few exceptions to my comment, but only because there have been very little (if at all) Pokemon games that launch both a handheld and a console version at the same time. Still, much like Paraguai said, Pokemon has almost always been designed to work on handhelds and has done it well enough to be one of many reasons why gamers purchase handhelds to begin with.
mas8705
Its okay I was jokeing.
I understand full well what you mean.
Heck most people would even agree that the 3DS of Smash is worse than the Wii U version.
Paraguai123 I think that's only the case because there are simply more people owning handhelds than home consoles. If they'd make a Pokémon game like let's say "Ni No Kuni", I could imagine that would bring a lot of people to want a Wii U specifically for that. If they could do something like linking 3DS and Wii U so that the handheld game earns all sorts of extra features from owning the Wii U game even yet it would probably encourage people even more. I'm pretty sure Pokémon could play out a lot of its slumbering potential in a grand Wii U game yet. At least the ones who enjoy Pokémon a lot would be the ones earning the most from it. Shame though it's mostly about how ThePokémonCompany can make money on yearly basis the easiest way. *sighs*
What I really hate is that people assume that this game is bad due to Rise of Lyric's failure. I really enjoyed this game and I do not see anything wrong with it
Yeah I think the 3ds games and the show's were amazing just not the Wii game though
The only thing that I didn’t like was forced exploration but Fire and Ice fixed that
It’s 6 years late and now I think I may try it since y’all are saying it’s good.
Oh there's alot wrong with it bro.
I wish Sega would just make a game about the Classic gameplay in Generations, I would love something like that with whole new levels, Generation's classic stages were enough to get me to buy the game, the modern stages were okay, but I don't really care for that gameplay, I would love a spin off game where the whole gameplay is classic Sonic.
I've been thinking about a game like that ever since Sonic Generations first came out, and it's a fantastic idea that I think Sonic Team should consider.
True, I had the most fun with the Classic Stages in Generations, not needing to rely on boosting or homing attacks, it was good o' fashion Speedy platforming.
The Sonic Advance games were also great at doing this with Modern Sonic
Wait, you DON'T like the modern stages? I LOVED them.
as much as I really just can't seem to get into the classics (might be the ports I play I dunno) it is very odd they haven't made a full classic Sonic game even just to satisfy the part of the fanbase that still holds the classics as the highest
Link100200
They weren't horrible, I still had fun playing them, but to me they were just filler for the classic stages.
wow the game is better than the version the company itself tried to make better....
That's a first.
Sega didn't make the wii u one.
It did dumb shit
over10000 wat
over10000 No, big red button did. I don't use offensive language. It's not nice.
Link100200 No. Sonic Team didn't make it. Big Red Button and Sega made it.
Glad to hear this version didn't bomb like it's console-version brother. I might pick this up at a cheaper price in the future.
Shattered Crystal is underrated.....
true
It’s a Ok game but Fire and Ice is way better
Yet again, the 3DS version of a Sonic game is the better one.
Generations: Awesome
Lost World: Okay
Shattered Crystals: Meh
Rise of Lyric: More like Lack of Effort
Shattered Crystals : Meth
Forces: Meh
Sonic Colors: Great
Wow a handheld version of a Sonic game that's actually better than the console version. That's something you don't see everyday...
I mean Sonic Colors DS is almost as good as the Wii version in my opinion, but yeah games like LostWorld 3DS and Generations 3DS are not as good as the console versions
@@theminecraft2516 eh, i enjoyed them more than the console versions
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric - Looks like it was made for the PS2
Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal - Looks like it was made for the 1st generation Nintendo DS...
that's way too much of an exageration, neither of the games graphically look good, but they both look better than a game on the PS/Origial DS.
ANY game looks like it was made on the DS when you blow it up to TH-cam size. SSB for 3DS looks awful on TH-cam, but great on the tiny screen.
If you see the game up close the graphics on the 3ds aren't that bad not great but good
The gamecube has better graphics than this sonic boom
OGREMAN McGeehan I'm not exaggerating. Considering Tomb Raider: Anniversary for the PS2 looks better than this garbage, that's saying a lot.
Interesting review. When I first heard about how incredibly broken Sonic Boom was, I kept wondering "Does that go for both versions?", because the demo seemed very fun and not broken in the slightest, so I was very confused. The fact that it's this fun is encouraging, and I hope people will recognize this is an okay game instead of looking at the Wii U version and going "SONIC BOOM MORE LIKE SONIC '14 SONIC BOOM IS LITERALLY THE WORST 0/10" and such. Granted I'm not saying the Wii U one should just be ignored because of how bad it is, but we should at least give something decent a chance, dontcha think?
Either way, I know what I'm getting this next christmas. Maybe.
I tried the demo, and I do really like the focus on exploration, platforming, and humor a lot more than I though that I would! It's essentially what I'd hoped that sonic boom would be, but it's still too bad that it's overshadowed by the horrendous console version and not as fleshed out. Still, I really hope that they try this type of sonic gameplay style again in the future, because if they flesh it out enough and maybe mix in the boost mechanic and presentation of sonic generations classic stages, then I could easily see a promising future for sonic!
nice picture, nobody never talks about that game.
if the controls weren't so loose it would be perfect
TheAwesomePokemonGamer
Are you talking about THIS game,or sponge-bob battle for bikini bottom?
I'm talking about this game, I actually love bfbb
TheAwesomePokemonGamer
i prefer the movie, but a great game on the gamecube/xbox.
That moment when you get here so early it's still 240p. xD
The gameplay of the 3ds is in 240p dude, sorry to burst your hope xD
Well, there is still a visual difference between the regular gameplay, and regular gameplay in 240p. And either way, I got here so early the only option was 240p.
Why does SEGA have to ruin handheld Sonic? It was the only place to get guaranteed awesome Sonic games until Lost World showed up
*Dimps & Sanzaru Games
Well this looks WAAAAAAY better then Sonic Boom WIIU so it IS better in that regard...
Being better than Rise of Lyric shouldn't be a complement lmao
Sega didn't ruin anything...since this sub-series here wasn't even developed by them. Also until Lost World? Unless lesser versions of Console games weren't bad until Lost World....decent Handheld Sonic games stopped a while a go, way before that game.
Sonic Generations 3DS was last decent handheld Sonic game
I had a feeling after seeing Rise of Lyric that this was actually going to be good.
Getting this for christmas. Smash and ORAS comes first. Even though Sonic is my favorite of the two... (I mean Sonic and Pokemon. Smash is a "once a Generation" sort of spiel.)
"sort of spiel"? Is that something people say in the English language, or do you happen to be German?
Albert_ I guess he's German and forgot for a second that he had to write in English xD
Albert_ No, once in a while people who speak English will say it. It is a bit uncommon, I guess. But I know I say it here and there, if that means anything.
The first one. Though i am not a native English speaker. Nor am i German.
Joma Gotta say, you seem to have a really good grasp on English. But what's your native tongue?
So, unlike Lost World, this is actually a GOOD handheld Sonic game, not horrible like the Wii U version of the game? That's all I needed to hear!
The conclusion? Don't listen to IGN.
Got the demo for it and it seems to fare better than the Wii U version.
i got Sonic boom Fire and Ice recently. I really like it! Im interested in Shattered crystal now too actually
It's WAY better than Rise of Lyric. Its not perfect, but Sanzaru Games did a good job for a Sonic spinoff
Gioh!Zuma Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice is a fantastic game. Although Knuckles still is dumber than ever, I like the game.
Seems better than the wiiu at least... Which is a very, very easy achievement .
So with the exception of Sonic Generations all sonic handheld games seem better then what ever console version comes out.
+likenem I loved the 3ds verison of Sonic Gen
that is an insult to sonic 1 and 2 on Sega genesis.
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is totally good, it's definitely not laggy.
Why does sonic have to go from good to average to bad so much?
Also, first, because all the cool kids are sayin it.
When you let other companies to make their own "reboot" of an existing franchise, this happens...
Pogohg That was a joke. People who say that are stupid.
***** That was a joke. People who say that are stupid.
Sonn Teh Hedgehoo What a terrible joke.
Ok number 1 cool kids don't say first
Number 2 classic games rant that good and modern games get hate because there diffrent
JD Odnetnin COMMENT REVIEWS! Sonic Boom, Shattered Crystal!
ofgwpq;qfwepfwefb transition go now omg plz
I liked it! Now, here's the deal: You need to go play this with a more open mind. If you thinking "It's gonna be like the classic Sonic games" then, don't bother. But, like GameXplain said, it's kinda like Metroid. But, if you go in thinking "Ok, this is a spin-off type of game, it won't be classic Sonic" then that's good! Now, in terms of graphics...depends. The gameplay looks good, I think it almost has a neat sort-of style to it. But...the models at the results (and I think cutscenes too) could look better. I've seen worse things though. Music...decent. I'll be honest, music is an important part. How? Imagine fighting a GOD boss or something while the Thomas the Tank Engine theme plays. Just, take a moment... Good? Alright. The levels seemed fun to play, and I know about the "repeat levels to beat" thing, but still.
All-in-all, I think this game os worth getting. Some say it could be too easy and for children. And that is true, but I'd ALSO recommend it for people who are new with the franchise...well, adventure levels anyway. (Based off the demo I played)
Or suck at Sonic games, like me. XD
Pros:
-Good for newcomers
-Portable (Added that because why not?)
-A good job of blending speed and adventure
-Art style looks nice, some say "Oh it's like old DS" but even if I grew up w/ GBA, the DS actually was probably the thing I'd played most.
-Music works with the game (It fits the theme/levels)
Cons:
-Cutscenes/Result models look kinda...ugh.
-Tunnel and Race levels were fun, but the difficulty seemed too easy based off the demo levels.
-Controls can get a little confusing. (Like "A" is the Enerbeam and "B" is jump, which threw me off a couple times)
-Shield enemies are annoying.
All in all, from what I've seen in the demo, 7.5/10.
Sanzaru Games. Nuff said.
I wish SEGA third exclusive game deal with Nintendo was a new F-Zero game and not this...
***** Yes, we all know Other M was bad. But it should also be remembered that Team Ninja was in charge of the gameplay, which was the better aspect of the game (not by much, but still) and that most of the problems stemmed from Sakamoto and his lack of writing skills.
Also, SEGA has done F-Zero before. One of their smaller teams did GX which was the one on Gamecube and that was very well-received.
Ive never played or seen the metroid series besides super smash bros
But ive heard other m is bad my question is how bad
You know, people might actually like this game if they just changed the name. No matter how good it is, people will hate it if it has the words sonic boom in it. I'm not saying this game was amazing like colors or generations, but it's not terrible like how people make it out to be. Sure, it's annoying to not be able to speed through the levels, sure it's ugly, but it's not a really bad game.
because they're bisaed
They just hate it because it's different.
Doesn’t look ugly at all don’t know where you getting that from
Under 301 Club!
Wait, so this game has a story that's completely contradictory with the WiiU version of the game?
As good as the Sonic Boom show is so far, they haven't even mentioned the events of the games or acknowledged Lyric's existence.
I mean, with a big-budget transmedia business venture like this, you'd think they'd at least try harder for some internal consistency.
It's this game that Actually makes the concept of Sonic Boom SO MUCH better!! This is a MASSIVE improvement over the LITERALLY broken Console Version!
this doesnt look that bad. I think why people are saying it doesnt feel like sonic is the really smoothed out camera movements (that almost trails behind sonic during fast turns and whatnot. Makes the action look a whole lot slower despite the characters still moving relatively fast, kind of like in donkey kong platformers. But... you can just play donkey kong country returns 3d. this game looks meh, and considering that sonic games lately have rarely been better then "meh" I really don't see why they should keep trying after this.
Why can't the guys and girls behind Rayman Legends not make a Sonic game!?!!?!? That would sooooo awesome! :)
I wish handheld Sonic games went back to the Advanced art style, I just don't think 3D models are that charming
While Rise of Lyric so far still gets a negative opinion from me Shatter Crystal at least gives more to offer with a few nitpicks here and there, but I still find the game fun even though I've only played the demo it's still a good game. Heh hard to believe the handheld version is better than it's console counterpart.
Good to see this was actually not a bad game. I played the demo and thought it was actually not bad at all, very playable really, which before the Wii U game released, had me hoping both would be good, but we know how that turned out. I'm probably not gonna get this, just because I don't want to pay 40 bucks for a very short game on a handheld I don't play often, but maybe once it hits the budget bin, I'll grab it.
There's something I'm struggling to understand. What could go on in a video game company, like the one that made the Sonic Boom games, that causes the protagonists to switch back and forth between knowing the villains and not knowing who they are? I write a lot of fiction, and it's always easy for me to check for this problem and fix it, and so why do they have a harder time?
That's a twist!
I fully expected this to be a typical inferior handheld.
Guess the main game set the bar pretty low, huh?
It's nice that they made the 3DS version pretty good. I'd probably buy it if it wasn't so short.
*looks at comment section* Yep, this fanbase gives me Ebola 2.0
over 9000!
Benjamin gutierrez oriol
What9000!!?!?Theres no way that can be right!
Mikey. B No shit.
Mikey. B Who said I was joking abotu this.
Mikey. B look im sorry for your lost but how was I suppose to know :l
you guys also liked Smash 3ds.... a much better game that has easily more than a 100 hours worth of content
Yeah but unfortunately no one is going to buy it since the WII U version is 20x better. Well except for MewTwo. That should help.
Aqua Jet it's still portable I play it with my friends at school a lot would still buy even if the wii u version came out first
I don't remember the exact reasons behind the rating and don't have the time to rewatch the whole review, but I wouldn't be suprised if Smash 3DS only got a "liked" because of the controls and the lacking settings for things like item frequency.
***** Not saying it has no use but I think the demand for Smash 4 is going down for 3ds.
Look like the 3ds version is better than the wii u version I think I might get the 3 ds version because I only have a 3ds xl and not the wii u. I might get the wii u version but I will think about it once I got a wii u console
This is becoming a sad trend in Sonic Games where the Tie in handheld games everyone ignores turns out to be the better of the two because its the simpler game.
I know that now a days is a taboo to say that a Sonic game is good but Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal is a very good and solid game.
Wow, a positive review for this game, maybe I shouldn´t be so mean with this game
See I liked this game unlike the wiiu version it's polished and fun not perfect or not one of my favriotes like adventure 2 unleashed or generations
Well this is some good news for the 3ds version.
Having played the demo I can say Shattered Crystals' is good, but does have some problems. Particularly in that the game doesn't flow quite as well as the classic games.
The tether is actually a great addition to the platforming side of the game but is crap when it comes to the shield enemies, which can only be beaten by coming to a dead stop to use the tether. Breaking the games flow.
The homing attack I also felt was a just a bit to slow, and of course as with any 2d Sonic game now, WAY to many boost pads.
It's a huge step in the right direction but needs some ironing out.
the race is like sonic rivals
I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I don't care. I liked Rise Of Lyric a lot better. Shattered Crystal was a disappointment for me. It's first 2 CG cutscenes were exciting, but the ending was honestly the worst ending I've seen in a Sonic game since Sonic and The Secret Rings. The game was too short, there weren't enough levels, or variety, and the collectables felt very pointless, especially after you see what they get you in the end. All the Shattered Crystals do is get you a low polygonic figure of the playable characters, and Amy, but you can't see the figure in 3d, you can't zoom in or out, and you can't rotate it more than just left and right. Collecting all the badges was more disappointing. All players would know before collecting them all, was that it would unlock something at Amy's house. I was hoping maybe it made Amy playable, or opened a concept art gallery, instead... It's just a looping animation of Sonic and friends dancing horribly inside Amy's house... I'm not joking, it is awful. The game seemed like fun at first, until I realized the game was over, and the rewards for all the collectables weren't even worth the time perfecting... Playing as each character felt too similar, even with their different attacks. I loved Rise Of Lyric, and don't get why so many people hated it. That game had a much better sense of exploration than the 3ds game, each playable character had unique abilities and interactions which made it fun to control all of them, the story was a lot better, the number of levels and varieties were more fun, the music had more atmosphere to it, and the game used cutscenes throughout, instead of going the lazy route, and just have the characters stand in front of a backdrop while repeatedly grunting and saying "mhm"... I don't get why people trash Rise Of Lyric for being a horrible looking, boring, and lousy game, when I had a much worse time playing the 3ds version. The 3ds version had much worse conditions than what Rise Of Lyric's faults contained.
It wasn't sonic team that made sonic boom on the wii u though......
god the graphics are horrible. even for 3ds standard. dont tell me graphics aren't everything. 3DLand looked great. Sigh. I have given up on sonic for a long time and I thought generations is gonna be a new start. guess not.
This is a youtube video though, they never do 3DS games justice
i admit the graphics look like the ds's 3d graphics just a tiny bit upgraded
Ur computer propably has bigger screen than ur 3ds and that is the reason Why the game looks so pixelated
SonicSimmer Yeah! By looking at a game like, say, Kid Icarus Uprising (play it if you haven't yet) Pit looks pretty bad, but in the actual game, he looks great! Just check out the demo, it looks pretty good.
I'm still surprised how "Sonic fans" or just "Gamers" in general keep thinking that Sonic boom is a Sonic team franchise, it has been said numerous times that this games are being developed by Big red button (The Wii U version) and this 3DS version is developed by yet another studio which i can not remember the name, but you get the idea.
Ack when are you guys gonna hate a game? I want to see that graphic
maybe it's because i only played the demo but the gameplay felt boring to me, which is weird since i like exploration games. for some reason it reminded me of Ty 2 Bush Rescue for the GBA which aslo felt bland
Probably because it's a Sonic game which makes you think of speed and you start to not like the blend. Just a wild guess.
I agree a little bit. While I thought the game was decent, that's all it was. Decent. It seemed to just drag on a lot longer than it really needed to and after a while of doing the same things over and over again, it just turned bland.
It was decent
Haven't played this but I loved Ty 2 for Ps2, not sure about GBA, didn't seem like the game that would really work on handheld.
Awesome review! I agreed with practically everything that was said.
The best Sonic game is Sonic Heroes.
+Keanu Reeves they aren't bad, just slippery as fuck
Heh, the portable version as better received than the home console version. That's rare.
Except pokemon
Very true
jack gamer But... There isn't a home console version of Pokémon.
There's games like Battle Revolution that hardly count and Colosseum which is completely separate from any main series game.
And even then they're all well received.
+TrainerPlatinum there's poképark for pokemon
***** Not a main series game though. It's nothing like the actual games, it's just a spin off, like Mystery Dungeon or Ranger.
i plaeyed the demo today on 3ds and i can say that i really enjoyed it!and i am an old school sonic fan from the era of game gear.
Its the f-baby of metroid and sonic rivals
Meh, i didn't like the demo that much :S
I am glad this game turned out fine. I want Sanzaru Games to get all the success they deserve.
Totally called that score! Bravo Sanzaru Games, bravo! :D
I think the 3DS version is better than the Wii U version, personally. I'm just waiting for a game based on Classic Sonic again! With all of it's side scrolling 2D platforming glory. I don't think SEGA realizes how many fans that would bring back to the franchise. The same mechanics but with 3D environments and backgrounds. Scrap the homing attack and bounce bracelet in a whole new story where defeating an enemy is as simple as bouncing on their heads or spin dashing through them. Just make it happen SEGA, ya know you want to!
Here's my review:
The game sucks. Super Mario 3D Land is infinity times better.
3d land is also infinity times easier.
Ooooh that guy got you there
Poke That's not what I said.
Samuel3DSWiiUGamer/∴※Samuel※∴/IngloriousSamuel except you didn't
Super Mario 3D Land is the least inpired Super Mario game ever. This game gets points for efford SM3DL gets nothing.
Great Review! Can't wait for your Wii U version review!
There is already one up.
Dude the wii u review is out
I just saw haha I guess I haven't payed much attention to the channel recently
I like this review myself
This game, outside of graphics, seems to have gotten a bit more polishing than the Wii U version. I got the demo, but since I was playing it while extremely exhausted I never gave it a full chance. I'm going to buy this game, it seems super fun and I've been denying myself so many Sonic games lately simply due to common opinion when I personally shouldn't be. Better start getting back into the groove of having my own opinions about these games.
The graphics actually aren't bad. It looks bad here because they had to blow up the picture to about 5 times the normal size. It looks pretty good on a 3DS screen :)
It's far easier to make a good sidescroller than a good open 3D game. With the Wii U version, they would've had to fine tune all the collisions with all the environmental stuff, which they didn't bother to do. The 3DS version is tile based, so they just had to design the levels.
narwhao
Oh okay, that makes more sense. I've never gotten huge into the whole game-designing concept, so clearly that didn't cross my mind. xD Thanks for the tidbit!
WHAT!? Gamexplain give Rise of Lyric a "Meh", yet giving Shattered Crystal a "Liked"? Well, let me guess. Many major critics didn't give the reviews yet from Gamerankings & Metacritic. Sheesh! What happened, critics?
.....WHAT?!?! The graphics are awful and the controls are GARBAGE! How can you recommend this?!
After seeing 2 of the goddawful reviews(Twilight Princess HD & Federation Force), this review is without the doubt one of the worst reviews I've seen from that community! Somecallmejohnny said that Shattered Crystal is "Not Worth the Full Price" due to the reasons he has explain in his review of his Sonic Boom games. This video is just pathetic. Gamexplain's reviewing skills is something I don't care anymore!
Sonic Boom news:
"Rumor has it" many BRB employees decided to drop the project in July, about half of them left because they wanted to do other things. Also, the producer of the game left around September of last year. Hopefully SEGA will do something, because apparently BRB won't. Maybe Atlus can just take the game and make it into Persona Boom Rise of Izanami or something. Kidding aside, this is really disappointing. Just dropping a project.
By the way, the whole Sonic 06>Sonic Boom or Sonic 06=Sonic Boom is just so dumb. That's people overreacting. Sonic Boom had two good things in it, the music, and the final boss. The rest of the game was completely horrid. Not only were there glitches, but the game was poorly designed to the point of being nearly unplayable without getting a game over. The Mach Speed sections, the regular levels themselves, the snowboarding sections, the vehicle sections, even the controls were bad. Sonic Boom has much more going for it than that. Okay, so there were some glitches. How about the level designs themselves? Could you get through them without much frustration? Yeah. Were the characters all playable? Definitely. Did the design of the level have you constantly dying, even though it wasn't your fault? Hell no.
Comparing this game to Sonic 06 and saying that they are on the same level is like comparing chugging tap water to chugging old milk. Sure, tap water isn't that great, but you can still drink it if you don't have any filtered water in the fridge, and chugging it isn't too difficult. The old milk will constantly be rejected by your body, but you will continue to drink it and eventually want to barf because a blue hedgehog was kissed by a human girl, and that should not happen. Don't do that. We have "that" side of the internet for that.
Sonic boom Tomorrow!!!!
I agree with the review, except the bit about the graphics. They're quite poor, the 3DS is more powerful than the PSP, so the graphics are disappointing and make the game look low budget for a Sonic game. Generations and Lost World looked better. The art style has its moments though. Beyond that, yes, the only gripe I have with the game is the amount of content. It's very fun and refreshing, but it feels like it was made in under a year. A lower price point would have been more fair -- 35 dollars/euros maximum, preferably 30.
lol sonic boom wiiu got an 4.6 ign review xD worst wiiu game so far. the upcomming games seem FREEKING AMAZING so i think sonic boom will forever be the worst wiiu game ever made.
Don't say that. We are very early in the WII U's life cycle. So I don't think this will be the worst.
hmm yeah your right. but i mean the games that are planned for 2015 are amazing. and the predictions for 2016 are amazing as well. we'll just have to wait and see :)
Yeah I get what your saying there will be a lot of great games and wiiu in next years
I think the wii u version looks amazing and the 3ds version is meh(I played the 3ds demo, haven't gotten to try the wii u yet)
IGN's reviews are a joke.
I don't know. I played the demo and 1: The controls confused me because after Lost World I was used to jumping with a so I kept accidentally using my enerbeam when I meant to jump. 2: It was a little too focused on exploration. The level was so huge that I felt myself constantly saying "Oh my gosh, how long is this level?!"
I give it 8 out 10
Man I agree with what you said. Why are other reviewers giving this game VERY low ratings? (At places I looked they were low but I got the game already and love except the part where you gotta this amount of that for this level and it's hard to get that amount. JUST ONE MORE EMBLEM to get to Scrapyard)
Like sonic boom 3ds but sonic boom rise of lyric sucks worst then sonic 06 but easier
IGN sucks as well, they rate sonic boom 3ds lower than the rice of lyric. -_-
(Sorry for grammar)
So in many senses, the 2D (well 2.5D) Sonic still reigns supreme to his 3D counterpart. Hardly surprising I know but still it's strange how both games seem to be so radically different in terms of quality considering how they are part of the same spin off series, even if they were both designed by different studios.
Is Yuji Naka a wizard? How in the HECK did he put an FMV cutscene on a game that's on a cartridge? Why couldn't they do that with the first Sonic game, then?
I just finished the game today and the experience I feel is indifferent. Nothing really wow-ed me. The game's not bad, but it could do better. If they have a better map and more levels with speed then it would be a great game. Tbh, i rather have Sanzaru create the next Sonic boom games from here on out, because it looks way more decent than rise of Lyric. Like I said its not really a bad game.
I don't think Shattered Crystal is a sequel to Rise of Lyric. From my understanding, they retell the same story, kind of like how Generations told its story slightly differently between the console and 3DS games.
Played the demo and wasn't too impressed. There's nothing terribly wrong with the game play it just wasn't holding my attention. It felt like your standard platformer. The rival races were fun though albeit a little on rails. Will pick up when cheap.
You forgot to mention one thing while on the comics part. CRUSH 40 CONFIRMED, BABY!
Who cares about the graphics?! The demo was fun and it played like a Sonic game when you did the race and tunnel stages. Anyway the graphics don't look half bad really. ;)
ummm... I see some negative opinions in the comments, yet in the video it looks llike a pretty good game. It doesn't feel like a Sonic game, they say... well, Super Mario 64 doesn't really feel like a Mario game, and it was great. Maybe I'll give this a try,
Looks like Andre's been playing Smash Bros. and Andre got stuck with the shitty Sonic games. lol
stop fucking around with the gameplay and make a new sonic game. two choices sonicadvenure/generations style or sonic 2/3 style no secret knight werewolf ring silver with guns bullshit
Would you suggest the 3ds game of the WiiU game? That's what I'm mainly picking up from this video
The only Sonic game I like is Sonic Dash the app game. I rented Sonic Colors for Wii one time and I couldn't understand the game!!! I never passed the first level and was more than excited to return it to the redbox machine.

uhm...isn't this a sequel to Rise of Lyric? What was Sonic doing throughout that game's entire story? lol
It feels more like the show because unlike Shattered Crystal, the developers for Rise of Lyric really had no contact with any of the show staff. And the TV show wasn't even released yet.
I am glad to hear that at least the handheld version of this game is not that bad, maybe it is because this version was made by a diffrent company. Hey I have an idea, if Sega ever wants to make another Sonic spin off game, give it to the developer of the 3DS version and keep BigRedButton as far away from the game as possible.
Okay, after watching this review, I decided to try the demo version of Shattered Crystal. And honestly, I have to agree with the review. It does feel a little like a Sonic game. Though it does have its share of faults.
It's a good game if you don't expect a Sonic game. Quite frankly I enjoyed playing as every other character more than Sonic
The only Sonic game on the 3DS that isn't utter crap.
generatiosn 3ds would like to have a word with you
KocoBlitz
Generations was so fucking bad. It honestly should've been a phone game, there was so little attention given to its story... And the gameplay was just horrible as always.
KocoBlitz beat gens 3DS in 2 and a half hours and never picked it back up, just found the level design bland and modern and classic sonic stages blended in due to the homing attack, but it's not definitely not utter crap it's an aggressively average game I'd say, lost world 3DS can go die in a fire though
Scott Elder I liked the 3DS version enough. Got it for a fair price but I can defiently say this is better now I think about it.
oh yeh I got it pre owned cheap to and I had no sonic games on the 3DS at the time so didn't dislike the game, think boom 3ds will be a bit better, the level design seems like it won't change much but with the exploration and other characters there's more to do in a level so will probably be not as dull to run throguh, the speed sections look like the special stages from gens 3DS but with more of a challenge (never failed one once) and this adds the races and extra stuff like the comic, and it has it's own story rather than a water down version of an already pretty bare story, better in lots of little ways rather than a huge gap
I wanted the Wii U game but it ended up being horrible.
This review made me want to get the 3DS version so maybe I can enjoy a Sonic Boom game after all.
Good review, still not that interested in the game, honestly. With my life suddenly as busy as it is, I only have time go games I KNOW I'm going to try!
I liked Shattered Crystal. It was fun! I only didn't like the excessive padding of the game! After that, it is a great game and better than the Wii U one!
This looks alright I've not seen gameplay of this game before I wasn't bother searching it up after how hard the last sonic game sucked
Playing this game for the first time in 2022 I kind of love it?
It’s one of my favorite 2D Sonic games period.
