I always found it kind of touching that Kershner was George Lucas's former teacher and Lucas convinced him to direct Empire Strikes Back. The student calling in a favour from the old master.
Thank God Kershner took the job, because Empire is the best of all the Star Wars Movies! Salute to Mr. Kershner, for his contribution to the absolute best of all the Star Wars films! They made a Movie Masterpiece!
Fans consider it better than the first, but the public thinks the first is the best (possibly because it was new, and partly because the second was dark and a bummer). When they released the Special Editions, _Star Wars_ did the best, naturally, which makes me think it's the movie of a generation, beating _The Godfather, Part 1,_ and other movies of the '70s. _The Empire Strikes Back_ is, I think, the greatest sequel of all time, unsurpassed by _Aliens, Terminator 2,_ and _The Godfather, Part 2._
It’s funny he says he didn’t know special effects. There’s a a story somewhere, I think it was the C-3PO rig they had for Chewbacca’s back, just wasn’t working. It was gonna take tons of money to fix or get better, but then an effect guy told Kershner he could do it at a fraction of the cost. He went away for a VERY short time, like not even 20 minutes, and said he solved it and Kershner was in disbelief, but when he saw, the rig was moving and everything and it looked fine! It turns out, the effects guy tied a fishing rod type tool to it and it worked even better and it didn’t cost much or anything at all! So it goes to show him as well as the team he had around him of course too!

This guy deserves more credit

I really enjoy hearing these type of stories.
The most perfect person for the job! The ESB is a perfect film!
Despite the fact it doesn't exactly work as a standalone?
The best Star Wars movie EVER is made by this guy.
Lucas made the lore.
Make it better than the 1st. He said "no". That's why he was the best for the job.
Long live George Lucas.
