Very nice video! I ordered my first Alden Indy boots on Saturday. Birthday gift to myself. I’ll be 54 this coming Sunday. I wish I had bought a pair when I was 23 years old. They would have been on many adventures as a result of my time traveling in Asia, across the United States, and the Middle East, when I served in the Marines. It’s ok, I plan to wear the sh..t out of my Indy’s far into the future. God willing of course

Thanks so much, Jason! They are amazing. My most worn boot, no doubt. I’m on my second pair, and will have as many as needed to make it through my whole life :).
Hey! I see this video now and really appreciate how you articulate it and express your experience with the shoes... Great humor too! On my side never tried the Aldens but a big "fan" of Vibergs.. It's always a pleasure to wear my service boots and go for this hipster coffee + walk.. I hope to try Alden one day (although I wish to stay minimalist and not to be tempted to buy them).. Thanks and cheers from Geneva 🇨🇭
Thanks so much! I hear Vibergs are top notch, but haven't had the pleasure to experience them. I too am pretty minimalist with my core products and usually just stick to one version of them. Cheers!
I've owned my Indy's for more than 20 years, and am on the third, soon to be fourth set of soles. They are bullet proof. I don't give a shit if they have leatherboard midsoles, as they are comfortable, hard wearing and have been riden hard and put away wet for two decades. I have a pair of Alden tassel loafers that I purchased in 1988 and wore daily for many years. Just had them rebuilt and rewelted, and they still look and wear great. Say what you will, these are great boots (and shoes) and have been a tremendous value over many decades.
My original pair are 403s, I also have a pair of 405s, and milkshake suede on wedges, that are both fairly recent purchases. I think of all of them, I actually like the 405s best of all... go figure.
Definitely my grail boot as well. Would really want to get the experience of fitting it as well to make sure I nail the fit considering the price. One day! Awesome video as well.
I was a little hesitant because of the cost, but I bought the Alden 401 about a year ago in black calfskin. Greatest boots I've ever owned, now I want a set of Alden loafers!
They are an investment for sure, but I love ‘em. Rocking my Alden loafers as we speak! Easily one of my most comfortable pairs of shoes. Would recommend. Cheers!
@@dominicscalise There’s lots of good looking choices, I’m thinking about getting the 17831F Unlined Leisure Handsewn in brown chromexcel. They look very comfortable. What loafers do you have?
@@dominicscalise yeah, that's why I resoled mine with commando soles! though I have to admit the neocork on my new 405s has much better traction than my old 403s. I think that neocork "hardens" with age and becomes slicker....
Love my Alden Indy’s! Have two pairs, one in Chromexcel and another in calf. Take both when traveling to alternate and they’ve held up perfectly… only thing is the tongue on one of my slides, and been thinking of getting it stitched in place. Now thinking of getting a 3rd pair in black, but not a huge fan of the white stitching on the black… wish everything I bought have me this much value.
Yesss! They are so great. I feel ya on the black ones; I really dig those with the commando soles, but black shoes generally don't fit into my wardrobe. Cheers!
Just bought the black Indy's - tried them on in store and they were miles ahead of any other shoe, let alone boot, I've worn. The fit, comfort and quality was apparent from the second they went on my foot. By far the most expensive pair of footwear I've owned, but I 100% believe in quality over quantity and that I will get years of satisfaction from these.
Yes! That was the same scenario for me. My mind was blown when I first slipped them on. I was like, "oh. THIS is what quality boots feel like." They are going to serve you well. Cheers!
I bought the #8 shell cordovan version for my first pair. I figured that if I was going to spend 600 bucks on a pair of boots, then why not go 850 and get a true grail. The downside is I’m too chickenshlt to wear them in crappy weather, but I do love looking at my feet when they’re on! Your comment about buying something you’re excited about wearing is dead right. That makes the difference and justifies many of our, eh, less necessary, purchases. :)
I love this. And I’m pumped you went with, let’s be honest, everyone’s grail Indy. And man, I totally feel ya, I may or may not have fell apart when I got my first scratch on my Aldens (and CPs
I have a pair of 405s that I've had for the last 4 years. Brand new. I originally was going to get Thursday Diplomats, but they sold out and changed the style. So I went with Alden for my Indiana Jones cosplay build. Worth every penny. Sure, it's the lighter brown. Like a British Tan kind of pumpkin brown, but I don't care. I love these boots. $600 after taxes at the time. They've been with me almost everywhere. Trekked up and down California, Disneyland, Universal Studios. I wore these overseas to the Philippines. Up and down Manila and Baguio. They've been my main boot to work retail, church, errands, hang outs. I practically lived in these boots since I got them. Only time I didn't wear them much was during the lockdowns. Had to take it to the cobbler 3 times. Twice to reinforce the upper and heel on one boot and once to replace the top lifts one both boots because they were pretty worn. I probably had more miles left on the heels before needing to do so, but I didn't mind. It had enough wear to justify it. Right now I'm currently looking at adding another pair (or two... or three). The Indy in the rusticalf and black Indy have my attention right now. Maybe even the 403 for a darker brown, but I could get another 405 too since the current batch is darker than what I have. The $600-$650 is for sure worth it for good boots that, like you said, can be excited to wear. I was looking at Nick's and White's but - while handsome boots that I'd like to get eventually - they don't charm me like my Alden 405s.
@@dominicscalise I have the same Gshock square in your other review too for years. By the way, your videos are done very well both the cinematography and the writing.
I own four pair of Alden Indy's. The 403 is definitely the iconic everyday version, but if you haven't tried a pair of the reverse tobacco chamois with commando soles your missing out on a great winter/wet weather pair of boots. Not at all like suede and they work for casual and many dress occasions.
Love Alden in general - I think the only model I’m missing out on at this point is a pair of Long Wings. I’m gonna check out the chamois Indy’s you mentioned - they sound rad.
they are my next purchase but alas that needs to wait til early next year. also no store here in vancouver bc carries them, so a trip down to seattle should remedy that. great video
My first pair of real shoes were the Alden suede chukkas that I bought as an intern during college. A few years later I bought the Indy's. The chukkas are definitely more comfortable and easier to wear than the Indy's.
Isn't it so good?! You're gonna love those boots. I gotchu on Indy care: Shoes trees are a must. Venetian Leather Balm for leather care. Put that on and then you're going to be brushing them with a horsehair brush after to bring the sheen back. Works great. Cheers!
Did you ever consider the Redwing Iron Rangers? Im looking at both boots but since you have experience with leather working, I figured I’d get your opinion.
The Iron Rangers are too workwear for my style; the Indys have an elegance to them that made them more versatile for how I dress. That said, both are great from a quality and longevity standpoint. I’m a Redwing fan too
not on the level of the indy but i have my redwing beckman 9011 its such a great shoe. there just never seems to be a situation that i cant wear it. and these shoes once the leather conforms to your foot are just amazingly comfortable.
Great video. I’m considering getting a pair of Indy’s. Did you have to size down in width? The reason I ask is because I’ve heard they can be very generous in the forefoot.
I thought I recognized Gorila Glue on those boots in the pics. When someone brings me footwear for repair and they've used Gorilla Glue it's an automatic $10 upcharge. That stuff is a pain in the ass to remove. I have two pair of Indy's myself and absolutely love them. Yours are looking great!
I know it’s a very common question and a very tricky one, but, what about sizing? It looks like a wide width on your foot but I know the last is a D width… I have a 9 or 8.5 in most of my boots and a 9.5 in Converse… Would you recommend going for an specific size if I also have a thin ankle and low volume feet?
These things run big for sure, and even the D width is roomy. I am a 9 in nikes, 9 in Jack Purcells, and with these (and all Aldens so far) I'm an 8 with enough room to wear chunky socks.
If you think these are rugged think again, they are a nice casual boot but not rugged . I own a pair in CXL and I like them . I use Venetian shoe cream to polish them, and I use black leather shoe strings from Whites I think they compliment the brown CXL well .
Define rugged. I’ve had my first pair for nearly 15 year. They’ve been in every situation from every kind of weather, 6+ years of daily shop use, venturing different countries, and numerous motorcycle trips (including off-road). Never let me down.
I used to do concrete foundation work out of high school and I did it for 5 years and I’ve also been a heavy equipment technician and I’d be lucky to get 3 months out of those doing foundation work . Something that is rugged can handle that kind of work . Don’t get me wrong it’s very nice foot wear for casual situations but I would never do real work in them and expect them to last doing foundations or climbing all over heavy equipment .
Ricardo! Thanks so much, man. I really do appreciate it. You won't regret picking up some Indys. They are so choice. Lemme know which ones you end up snagging when ya do!
Great video of The Alden Boot ;). Just curious which products you might use for maintaining their luster i.e., Saphir or something other or simply nothing and use a horsehair brush and damp cloth like some I've read? I actually purchased mine back in 2020 at a store in Media, PA that was going out of business and I've yet to wear them. I just have a problem, buy things like boots, watches, hats, etc., then fear wearing and damaging them. Crazy I know and hopefully watching this and other videos will give me the motivation finally to start wearing mine. Cheers!
Thank you! You've gotta start wearing them! They only get better. In fact, I wear my original pair more than my new pair. There is something special about well-worn (and banged up) high quality products. I simply use a horse hair brush and venetian shoe cream to keep them in top shape.
You can use Safir neutral shoe cream, or Bic 4, or Venetian Shoe Cream every six months or so, but otherwise just keep them brushed and wear the hell out of them.
Never really liked the look of them, so even if they were very comfortable, I couldn't justify to shell out that much. Luckily I found the Heschung Ginko boots. They are amazing... and by the way this channel too is amazing!
The thing is. Alden Indy will always be around. Most cool Red Wing boots come and go. So I’ll try to collect the ones that are hard to come by first. After that I want a pair of Vibergs and then both Alden Indy boots. In calf and crome excel. I guess Alden Indy are grail boots for many people. Slowly working my way towards them.
Man, that's a great question that I can't answer; I actually don't recall my Brannock device measurement! I will say, all my Alden shoes are .5 - 1 full size down from my normal, casual shoes. Cheers!
Love the style of the video. I unfortunately need to wear insoles for flat feet. Does anyone have any experience wearing insoles in these? Would the fit become too tight without being able to remove the Alden insole?
Thank you! I hope someone can hop in to comment on this. These do come in differing widths, so perhaps if you dropped insoles into them, going up a width might be the ticket?
Dang you put your self in a corner with that "last ware" of the old pare. they would be perfect for a full resole to lug comando sole so they serve the use of boots you ware where you wouldn't ware Aldens usually. Tat would be kind of cool to have Aldens for Alden situations and Aldens for tough stuff. However if you do that you are killing the story of last ride to the sunset. Though life
Haha! I'm not married to the story of a final wear - I just used a shit-ton of Gorilla Glue and thought I ruined them. I'm gonna have to reach out to Alden to see if I can revive them. I'd love that!
Go 403s. The 405s have a red hue to them that makes them harder to pull off with certain clothes/in certain situations. 403s in brown chromexel - you can’t go wrong.
Awesome video. I too have watched hours of videos trying to decide on 403 vs 405. I’ve even contacted Alden, shoeMart and Horween about the best leather/color for me. Even though everyone say the 405 is the “true Indy,” I personally like the looks of the 403!! Thank you for the video that helped me decide.
Alden indys with the commando sole are on my short list. But I just bought a Omega speedmaster so 600 dollar boots are a hard sell to the wife right now.
KC CO. I knew I recognized you from somewhere! Followed your Instagram for years. Inspirational stuff! I’m also an old leather crafter and happy owner of two pairs of Indys. Mainly because of your old posts. Greetings from Sweden!
Thanks, man! You know, I just might get in touch with Alden one day to see if they could restore them. It'd be super cool to see bring them back to life.
@@dominicscalise You should! Bring ‘em back. They have such a great story. There are quite a few cobblers out here on YT as well who do good work. Might make for some good content for your channel. There’s a huge audience for shoe restoration believe it or not. You’re definitely onto something with your style and content.
Those are also solid boots. The Indys keep that somewhat elevated feeling because of their sleek silhouette, but they feel a bit less dressy after you put them through the ringer.
Alden Indy boots are a 300$ boot masquerading as a 600$ boot. Pressed board insole. Cardboard heel counter. Thin chrome tanned leather with a heavy acrylic paint.
Seems like you just watched a Rose Anvil video. To be clear - The leather on the 403s, Chromexcel, is actually fantastic and NOT painted. It’s a dual tannage which gives you the best of both world - patina and durability. That said, there is nothing wrong with a well done chrome-tanned leather; in fact, it’s likely preferred for any hardwearing boot. Regarding build materials to price - Yeah, I probably agree that they are more expensive than they should be, but I’ve owned my first pair for over 10 years now, worn them harder than most people, have had them resoled 3 times, and they will easily do another 10 years. The price tag is definitely a hard pill to swallow, but they've served me super well and they just look so damn good.
The way I looks at spending money is that if I’m laying on my deathbed would I say to myself “if I didn’t spend $600 on Indy’s then my life would’ve turned out so much better “ …YOLO
That's so overblown. I've owned my original pair for a decade and I guarantee I've worn them harder than 99% of people. I've resoled them 3 times and they've held up like champs. They easily have another decade of wear in them. I found a cobbler to take on the pair that I messed up with Gorilla Glue. I had him slap combat soles on them, and I took them with me on a motorcycle trip through Southern Mexico. Great boots.
Oh man. I really appreciate the kind words. I think it’ll just come down to consistency… and patiently waiting for years :) I appreciate you coming along for the ride!
Wow, this video didn't age well...get a better indy boot in the Parkhurst Niagara mahogany with a commando sole. It actually has real leather in the heel and soles instead of cardboard. Sad, alden used to have real leather 35 years ago when Indiana Jones movies hit the theaters. Then they swapped in inferior parts.
I find comments like this so silly. All you guys come in after gulping down Rose Anvil videos to tell me that the boot I’ve worn hard for a decade is not long-lasting. I’ve worn these harder than 99% of people, have had them resoled 3 times at this point, and they’ll easily last another decade. I still wear my original pair more than my new pair. Thanks for the knock-off suggestion. I’m not in the market.
@@dominicscalise I kinda doubt these are hard wearing boots, cardboard doesn't hold up that well when put under stressful situations.
Thanks for the kind words!
Re: Indys - You'll love 'em. Definitely get sized in store; they run big.
@@mikem2132 I have the snuff tassel loafers
@@dominicscalise That’s cool, how is the sizing compared to the Indy boots? Did you have to get a half size larger?
@@mikem2132 Nope, Same size
"Ya goin sleddin..." haha another one knocked out of the park.
Haha thanks, pal!
Cheers!
Another great video. Personally I'd love to hear more about your history with motorcycles.
Thanks, Jon! Oh man… I might have to get into that story in some video.
Bought some Indy 403 a while ago, they do live up to the Hype for sure.
They are just tops
Just bought the black Indy's - tried them on in store and they were miles ahead of any other shoe, let alone boot, I've worn. The fit, comfort and quality was apparent from the second they went on my foot. By far the most expensive pair of footwear I've owned, but I 100% believe in quality over quantity and that I will get years of satisfaction from these.
Yes! That was the same scenario for me. My mind was blown when I first slipped them on. I was like, "oh. THIS is what quality boots feel like." They are going to serve you well. Cheers!
I have my J.Crew Alden 403 version i really loved these boots.
Dude. Another outstanding video! Thank you 🙏
I'm wearing mine with love such a good and iconic boot
They are tops!
They are charming, no doubt. Cheers!
I have the same boots for over 20 years now, it’s my dress down or casual dress go to boots besides my Clarks desert boot.
20 years! Love to hear this.
I've been calling you the Top Turkey for years. Another great review!

I love my Indys! I have other boots that may have a better build quality, but my Indys are my favorites!
They are great quality, but visually, they are so good!
Are the chukkas at the beginning of the video Alden snuff suede? I would love to see a video about them.
They are! Love those things too.
they are my next purchase but alas that needs to wait til early next year. also no store here in vancouver bc carries them, so a trip down to seattle should remedy that. great video
My first pair of real shoes were the Alden suede chukkas that I bought as an intern during college. A few years later I bought the Indy's. The chukkas are definitely more comfortable and easier to wear than the Indy's.
Man, I love my suede chukkas too. They are such a great looking shoe.
a love letter to the Alden boots
Mine just arrived yesterday. The smell of that leather is awesome. Any recommendation on products to take care of the leather?
Isn't it so good?! You're gonna love those boots.
I gotchu on Indy care:
Shoes trees are a must.
Venetian Leather Balm for leather care. Put that on and then you're going to be brushing them with a horsehair brush after to bring the sheen back. Works great.
Cheers!
Rhino laces are great too I use them on my work boots
Thanks for the rec! I'll check those out.
@@dominicscalise you’re welcome!
Worth every penny
Wearing mine right now. My go-to
Did you ever consider the Redwing Iron Rangers? Im looking at both boots but since you have experience with leather working, I figured I’d get your opinion.
The Iron Rangers are too workwear for my style; the Indys have an elegance to them that made them more versatile for how I dress. That said, both are great from a quality and longevity standpoint. I’m a Redwing fan too
@@dominicscalise thanks for the insight! What’s probably gonna make me get the Alden over/before the redwings is that the Indys are known for comfort.
Your Alden boots are the same size as your Alden tassels?
Yes
not on the level of the indy but i have my redwing beckman 9011 its such a great shoe. there just never seems to be a situation that i cant wear it. and these shoes once the leather conforms to your foot are just amazingly comfortable.
Redwings are awesome too!
Plan on Indies being my next pair of boots. Thanks for the cool review. Hey tell me about that cool wood chair you use in the video.
Thanks!
That chair is an Eames LCW. Maybe my favorite chair of all time.
Great boots!
Great video. I’m considering getting a pair of Indy’s. Did you have to size down in width? The reason I ask is because I’ve heard they can be very generous in the forefoot.
Thank you!
Alden’s standard widths (D) have always worth well for me. I’ve stuck with that.
I don't blame ya! Gorilla Glue is a beast.
I hope I can have the original pair salvaged one day. They've been such great boots.
Cheers!
Alden makes these boots in multiple widths, including narrow. Mine are C width rather than the standard D .
What socks do you wear for these during the different seasons ie summer vs winter?
I wear Darn Tough merino wool socks year round with these. (Wearing them both as I write this)
If you think these are rugged think again, they are a nice casual boot but not rugged .
What lace color is on your old pair of Alden boots?
That's actually grey paracord.
Hey Dom! just stumbled upon your channel, great content and great work! Thinking of getting the Indy's in suede or this one you just showed!
Ricardo! Thanks so much, man. I really do appreciate it.
You won't regret picking up some Indys. They are so choice. Lemme know which ones you end up snagging when ya do!
You should completely restore your original pair. It shows your history and it probably fits you like a glove by now.
If Alden will forgive my Gorilla Glue sins (I haven’t asked them yet), I totally will! I think that’d be amazing.
@@dominicscalise exactly
Never really liked the look of them, so even if they were very comfortable, I couldn't justify to shell out that much.
Luckily I found the Heschung Ginko boots. They are amazing... and by the way this channel too is amazing!

I first want to buy more Red Wings, then a Viberg and then definitely a pair of these. Looking forward to 2022 :-).
All great boots!
The thing is. Alden Indy will always be around. Most cool Red Wing boots come and go. So I’ll try to collect the ones that are hard to come by first.
They actually have really amazing arch support by themselves
Great videos! Keep them coming:)
Thank you! Many to come :)
I’m very interested in the Indy boot. I just cant figure out if I want the 403 or 405
Great boots. Super comfy but yeah, they're pricey. I wear white gym socks w mine. shhh 😀
I’ll never tell.
Dominic Scalise that’s why u da maN!
Great boots but its a bit hard to justify $900 Australian on them So I bought a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers for $528 instead
Red Wings are great too!
I just got mine yesterday. $685. I like them but after watching Rose Anvil video of them being dissected I know they are not the Highest quality.
@@dominicscalise I wore them today for the 1st time. Love them. So comfortable right out of the box.
