I had a GSX750F new when they came out in 89,looks were debatable but I thought it was ok,certainly looked hideous when the bodywork was off.Did many good trips on it when I had it - from memory it even compares favourably with the VFR750 I have now, especially on the motorway.

I absolutely love everything about this bike, specially the looks. I'm actually considering getting one. The one thing that is stopping me, is the size of the tank. 12 lts for a 1000cc is just too little. Even if I'm just gonna be using it for my city commutes, it's more and more visits to the station.

  • @1MrBryn

Also agree on the 750 thing. I love the styling of this, but I have no interest in getting a thousand. If they do a 750 version down the track I'll be all over it.

I feel like a lot of people who dislike the look are because they never had a Katana. This bike targets the people who use to have the original bike but now they're a lot older and tired if hunching over. Remind me of a Delorean of bikes.

the 2022 update version is minimal, a quickshifter, improved clocks to help see them when the sun is shining, slight engine tweaks but I believe still the same fueling, the same engine is in the new 1000GT and that is super smooth so Suzuki can do it just not on the Katana and being in the UK and wanting a test ride on the 2022 version you have to travel 9435 miles.... yes that is the nearest dealer who has one on demo.

I remember going to the NEC motorcycle show in '82. They had a silver Katana on show, it was on a revolving pedestal and it looked drop dead gorgeous. At the time, Meriden Triumph was in its final death throws and I thought, "no wonder, who would buy a Bonneville when you could get one of these beauties". Sadly, the only bike I could actually afford at the time, was a second hand MZ.

I've got a 1000 and a 650. They both serve different purposes, the Z1000SX comes out for long trips the 650 is for daily use. That said the SX is very rider friendly and you I could easily use it daily. Yes it has power due to the 1000cc but it isn't bonkers, where the 1000cc supersports can be more so. Also I've been all over the UK on the 650 and it does it well enough, the SX just does it better. At the end of the day they only do what you let them do. As for this Katana I get why they made it the way they did, but the combination of looks (which are not for me ) and the small tank kills it.

Enjoyed your review, Spicy. While I know that looks are in the eye of the beholder, I can't understand mass hysteria about the looks. It's like music - embrace all the genres. I like it. It's compact, aggressive, balanced and unique. The industry has perhaps gone so insect front end (MTO9, Street Triple or duck bill crazy BMW GS/Multistrada etc.) that anything else is deemed ugly. Sure there are some classically good looking bikes out there (Panigale, Z900RS, etc), but there are plenty of far less integrated looking bikes out there with "bolted on looks" that are accepted. Remember the original Street Triple? Fugly, but attractive in a quirky way. IMO this is no different. Cheers.

There was a 1000 Katana sold alongside the 1100 back in the day to qualify for production racing. But here I think 1000 is just a convenient repurposing of an engine.

Everything you said in your review echoes how i feel about the GSXS1000f. It's so powerful you can't use any more than 5000 rpm. It has so much torque that the engine seems characterless - every gear seems the same...6th gear seems to have the same pull at low speeds as 2nd gear. If you whack the throttle open you are quickly going so fast you daren't take you eye off the road to see what speed you are doing. I test rode the 750 too and agree with you that less is more.

The original Katana was first released as a 750, and if I remember right, the 1000, and the 1100 followed soon after, using the GSXR engines, as the 750 did. Love the looks from front back to the seat but I personally think the tail tidy is too small for that particular bike design. RSM8, keep the content coming.

I'm personally a bit 50 - 50 on the new Katana. I mean, I really like the looks of it, but it definitely needs improvements with a wider, flatter bar, mirror delete, a tail tidy (with the exception of the one on that bike specifically), all the protection bits and maybe integrated indicators into the tail light and a smoked headlight. But I am a bit disappointed with how they're giving a quite decent price tag and not even including a quickshifter (autoblipper I wouldn't frankly care about, rev matching is fun). Still, I can't say much until I try one, which I won't even be able to think about for another three years, minimum

It sounds like it's not really the cc's that is fuckin with your speed but rather the throttle on/off, which is typical euro bullshit. It's hard to tell w/o feeling it, though, just what it seems like based on what you're describing. The 0-100 in 1st gear thing is typical with liter bikes.

Two things of concern. There's a carbon fiber scorpion slip on which would have complemented the colour coordination here. That chrome one is out of place. Two is the logic behind the 12 litre tank. The only reason I can conjure up is that Suzuki wanted to split buyers between this and the Gixess thou' ..12 litres on a litre bike is underwhelming to say the least. Otherwise really cool review and information..two thumbs up 👍👍

I did a test ride on the original Katana when it came out and thought it was fantastic it looked amazing and handled really well (for an early 1980’s bike). I like the looks, as I did with the original. I'm also a fan of higher capacity machines because I like the torque, which is also why I tend to prefer twins to inline 4s. The lack of any differences compared to the GSX-S1000, other than the aesthetics and a 30% smaller tank, while being $3500 AUD more expensive... kills the appeal. I'd be more inclined to buy the GSX-R1000, which is still $1000AUD cheaper, has better electronics (uses an IMU for the TC and ABS, also includes a quickshifter/auto blipper at that price with Suzuki's current promotion) and the new SR-VVT engine.

The Katana that's complained about is usually what was called the GSX-600/750F outside of America...taken for what it was, it was. Fine bike from what I can ascertain (commuter/budget ST bike). The problem was the US where it had the Katana name and buyers that wanted a sport bike for budget-bike money. Marketing is, typically, Suzuki's downfall in the US.

I do get what you mean about with a smaller one you can wind it on a bit, the vfr i used to have sounded awesome when you let it go (delkevic with the baffle tube removed), but sometimes i'm finding it's nice to not need to. I have a few points of umbrage with the neo sport, but that's off-topic for this video...

I feel the same with their gsx250...why they didn't do a 300 or Hell even a 400 would be better. But a 250 sport bike in this day an age, especially coming from suzuki, who isn't a bad brand by any means, but people who generally choose suzuki, just buy them mostly for reliability. But they kinda went back in time by 2-3 years making it a 250. It is a cracking little bike, but don't see any on road around here...it's either the R3 or Ninja 400.

When I heard about this though, I was like..oh wow, have to see the pics and when I did, I liked it. Buuut...only in a 1000 kills it for me. I already have a cbr900rr and with traffic getting worse here every two years, buying a new bike that you know you are hardly going to use 5 and 6th gear..not worth it. If they made a 600 I'd be signing the papers any day now.

I do like fender on the swingarm, cuz it made tail look much cleaner. and it made the bike look longer and shorter tail which looks like a Streetfighter a bit.
i would put an S1 exhaust from SC project on it, still, i waiting for Z model. not going to buy any bike soon.
30 Mph? better with 200 VanVan lul. VanVan would last forever im sure.
Speed Triple RS still my first choice to pick if it available in my country i hope they selling it next year. but i would like to have Katana aswell, both are my top pick for 1litre bike but i would prefer my SV650 for everyday ride.
