  • Wing Chun is a martial art that originated in China and has since become popular around the world. The tan sau is a basic technique in Wing Chun that involves defending against an opponent's punch by using a hand position called the tan sau. The tan sau is formed by extending the arm with the palm facing down and the fingers relaxed, as if holding a tray. To perform the tan sau, the practitioner steps forward with the front foot and raises the arm with the tan sau hand to deflect the punch. The tan sau can be used to defend against punches to the midsection or head, and can also be used to redirect the punch to set up counterattacks.

Latest TH-cam video is going to piss people off.
Gang, most all Wing Chun is taught and seen through the lens of theory because it’s only taught and applied in a controlled environment or chi sau.
If you are looking to “Tan Sau” in a fight, you’ve already lost and if you don’t know what I mean by that, you’re not ready to fight.
The punch is EVERYTHING in Wing Chun and that’s why it’s the first movement we ever learn.
I’m not going to enable people by teaching them something that isn’t a reality just because your Sifu made it work in a demonstration in front of class.
If you want Fantasy Fu, go watch an Ip Man movie.
Kids, Tan Sau works in Chi Sau and for controlled energy demonstrations. It may even work in post contact grappling. It has no place in striking and gap bridging, because your own initial strike is fundamentally required for you to not be behind the movement. If Tan Sau was so important, Bruce Lee would have brought it into JKD because it’s one of the base techniques we’re taught in WC. I know a lot of you don’t want to hear it, but if you use a Tan Sau in a fist fight, you aren’t ready to fight and are still in the comforts of a controlled training environment.

I was always taught that the tan sau was just the halfway point in a strike. The technique is just what happens when you get objective force meeting you while your in mid strike. If the the opponent force is overwhelming to yours of course you redirect that energy. etc. But I was taught that blocking was not a technique in Wing Chun. Its a constant attacking art and the Tan sau was just a wedge to direct the incoming energy off center . But its main objective is to strike.

Very nice video, I feel like Biu Sau is a more natural reaction than Tan Sau in the sense its more natural to flich palm down than palm up...However I see your point with the overall impact being absorbed by your shoulder instead of your Lats, I like that you're encouraging people to go off how the body feels in certain positions to ascertain what works best for their particular build. Keep em coming!

But if the Biu Sau is what works in the moment, USE IT! That's the whole point. Just make Wing Chun yours.

Biu sau shouldn't cause pain in your shoulder if you turn your hips towards more towards the punch. I agree that I don't see tan-sau being practical in a fight in most situations though!

When someone says “shouldn’t” we have to take into consideration everyone’s anatomy is similar but not. You might not have done the thousands of heavy reps I have over the years in the gym that have destroyed by body. Also, turning is literally fractional and is only needed to the degree of its application. Lastly, this, as all things, is a demo. I’d never put myself in a position to take in coming energy like that without my own forwarding force.

Yes an mma fighter would tear you up. However, wing chun was designed for self defense, not the ring.

The Win chun real fight wich took place in teality were not interesthing at all! There was nothing to see! The only thing you could see was one guy hit the floor! In one of them of wich I know my friend had this ‘ fight’ wich was not a fight but just one bulls eyes hit to the mouth of a very very strong man The strongman lost alle his front teeth!! Ofcpurse my friend fist were well conditioned!!! Without well conditioned fist this can not be donn! The win chun fist is vertical en the karate fist is horizontal well in use I do not care is I use the verticsl or horisontal fist !!! I only care for result! I advise my studrnt to condition the weapens daily! I use the can do end and twist daily for my fist annywhere anny time! My fist has to work just one shot not two one! For this you do not need cardio but for the ring you do need cadio! But without glioves the man with conditions hands and arms is a problem for a man with less condition arms! In the yearly sparring we have permision to break arms! There are manny around who can repair broken arms!!! You can enter only if your arms are well conditioned! Either you break other arms ore your arms will be broken! If this will go on for ever??? Who knows!!! But it happend for manny years!

While you may know terminolgy, you fail to know concept or application. Your understanding of Tan Sau is abysmal. The examples provided represent similar application to the very karate style blocks you dismiss. Wing Chun is fluid, Tan Sau is a dispersing energy movement, which flows into another movement. Your example is misleading at best. Secondly, to use Biu Tze to block a high hook punch (you inaccurately named it) is horrible technique and should not be done, just as that extremely high Tan Sau. The correct block should have been a standard Biu Sau, which is taught to beginners. I have watched many of these videos, not impressed at all. If you wish to truly have the correct understanding of Wing Chun I recommend you contact Grandmaster Steve Lee Swift. He is currently in Minnesota and will be of great benefit to your training. I have been a student of his fir nearly 20 years, and have been teaching classes under him for almost 15 of them. And yes, I have plenty of application experience to back up my critique of videos. Not in a classroom or demonstration, real world application. Lastly, foul language is not becoming of someone looking for respect when attempting to teach. To the keyboard warriors who are "offended" by this post, I will part you this wisdom...kung fu translated means great skill thru hard work, dedication, and endless practice to attain perfection. This is not it. Have a great day, hope you become better a better person today than you you were yesterday.

Yep. All that will never apply in a real fight. Definitely during chi sau and post contact but never in the opening stages of a fight or to bridge the gap. But you do you.

Well no surprise that your quick quip sticks to your original premise. Those who know will relegate this garbage to the countless other failures of Wing Chun out there on the internet. The rest will be impressed with this garbage because they dont know any better. As far as being of Grandmaster Steve Lee Swifts lineage, I say you are a liar and a fraud. Almost 20 years his student, never heard of you, never mentioned, certainly never trained with you. Obviously nothing more than a dime a dozen, seen many of your type and ALWAYS the same. No honor, just ego. Again to those who view this garbage, follow this charlatan at your own peril. This philosophy, practice and techniques will get you hurt if not killed when it matters. You want the real deal, go seek out Grandmaster Swift. He is a living legend in our time. As for this instructor, first lesson you should ask for is how to properly use Tan Sau. Until then you have a long, long, long way to go before you should be presenting anything about Wing Chun. Nothing you have shown is accurate.
