- Analogplanet.com editor Michael Fremer opens the new David Bowie "Five Years" vinyl Box Set and talks about his "Almost Famous" moment covering the 1972 David Bowie Ziggy Stardust tour and traveling with the band.
That's some vinyl collection you have there! Those black plastic discs in their beautiful artworked sleeves are the most precious of possessions. Your memories of the Ziggy tour are fascinating & it is so sad that Mick, Trevor & David are no longer with us. As a 16 year old in 1972 I remember the era so well & bought much of the vinyl on its release date. The Space Oddity 45rpm is indeed on the blue Phillips label & I have it in my collection. David's manager at the time was Tony Defries & not Tim. He was reputedly a shark & it later cost David a reported $27m to get out of the Defries Mainman contract. It must have been wonderful living in the moment musical history was being made.
Your stories are so fun to listen to, entertaining. I was spellbound. And jealous I wasn't interested in Bowie in his prime. You brought Bowie back to life, just for one day. so thanks
Hands-down the best unboxing video I've ever watched. I just bought this set, and it was an absolute pleasure to watch you discuss it. Really good stuff, man. RIP, David...
I love this guy. Great wealth of music knowledge and extremely entertaining. I could hang out with him and listen to records all night!
Mike you are excellent - your style is addictive and you have a great voice. Most importantly you are funny and know your stuff - you appreciate art both musically and visually and convey it with great enthusiasm, keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for your honesty and showing us this cool set. Get well soon!
Thanks for sharing your fun memories along with the unboxing. Great video!
Just found this and loved your wandering off subject, you made me chuckle and enjoyed the unboxing.
I thought my record collection was big. That's impressive. You are great advocate for analog.
Michael, thank you for sharing those memories and memorabilia with us. What an amazing time that must have been? It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. We lost a true artist when Bowie passed. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to see him perform at The Bridge School Benefit here in Northern CA. AN amazing acoustic set spanning Hunky Dory To Ziggy.
Thank you for sharing such wonderful stories. Thoroughly enjoyed your video
I second this, it's always cool to hear this kind of personal stories behind the music.
I think Bowie wasn't an ET , on the contrary he was the most human among us (well I was on short pants on those days) he was the most free man around in every subject. Fashion, pop-music and in showbiz he kept been number One . What a lucky man you are Mister just to meet him even dance with him . I am very happy to hear from you that mans like John Lennon and David Bowie have a very very spacial place on the heart of the people who really listen the music and appreciate the artist. Thanks for sharing this
I wasn't thrilled by your Beatles boxes because they're everywhere on TH-cam. But then I found this Bowie-Box video of yours. I am too young to understand your enthusiastic spoken word about his show. But I met mister Bowie back in 2015 and he signed some CD's of mine. Thanks for the words of you about Mr. Bowie.
Thanks for sharing your memories ffrom the Ziggy Stardust Tour, I enjoyed it.
I would love to see your entire record collection. Such wonderful history. You are the reason I now
Watch multiple TH-cam record videos
Never a dull moment ! Incredible font of information, wonderful!
I'm very late to the party but your stories and memories are just a treat to listen to.
It really gives an insight into the scene during that time.
What great experiences you have to treasure and share.
Thanks for a great video.
Damn, that's one hell of a collection! thx a lot for the upload
He is the kid from "almost famous"
Not sure how I tripped over your vlogs, but they are terrific! Thank you!
All this and a head full of cold! Well done Michael, a tour de force, much appreciated.
Just came across this and your channel via TH-cam Facebook Vinyl Community. Loved it. Great review, especially enjoyed the English accent! Subscribed.
I saw that Carnegie show and was not sure what to expect. And yes it was amazing! One of my top 10. Ronson was a guitar god.
How amazing to see someone who TRULY loves his music. Fascinating listening to you and very interesting
I need to pick this up. I love David Bowie.
Thanks for a great video.
Well done Michael. That was a quick 30 minutes for me mate.
RIP David.
I love listening to you Michael, and what a collection you have.
I could listen to you for hours, man. It's great you still have a passion for all of this! Me too!!!
Thanks Michael for the tip! Love ya man!
Great video and wonderful stories! That's a hell of a collection! I just bought the CD version of this set. It really is terrific.
Thanks for the stories and Bowie love big fan myself! Give me your hands! That was heart felt , great video !
Loved your stories and insight mate!
I love music history, this was such a neat story. I could picture seeing Bowie in concert with the story you told.
Entertaining as always Mike- loved the Baseball, Bowie David call-out to the youth of America- funny as ell!
Thanks for sharing the stories. Too Cool. This is an awesome set. Favorite set in my collection for sure.
Thanks for the video Michael Fremer and your breakdown of the box set and you personal experiences on Ziggy Stardust I will definitely get the box so I can sell my simply vinyl pressings surprisingly no talk of it mastering sources
Dude, you crack me up.... Your entertaining and your Japanese accent is spot on! LOL I like that Baseball Commissioner radio spot you shared also, however the BOWIE stuff, all of it, fun, informative, full of trivia, and very entertaining. Thanks! Whew, I've got lots of videos to catch up on... :-)
I think it's great that there is a vinyl revival and people are rediscovering it. I find the TH-cam channels about vinyl hoardes and snagging really enjoyable and I don't even own a turntable or vinyl! What I dislike is the comment you make in this video about listening on a computer. I listen on a computer (Raspberry Pi and a desktop) and I also have a CD player, preamp, amp and PSU setup. Not everybody has 1) the money to afford vinyl or a decent turntable 2) the space to store it and possibly the most important 3) an extremely understanding partner or ideally somebody who shares their love of vinyl.
Peace out!
Excellent Michael, didnt know you were such a fan.
Excellent vid my man , and any fan of `the thin white Duke `is instantly subbed
Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
I look forward to watching your other videos.

Great memories relayed there; thanks for sharing those... good times! :) And a nice unboxing video too... great style :)
Oh my...... This is so awesome! Thanks for posting
I continue to enjoy your videos, hope you will review new McCartney live reissues.
Don't try to sing or play but cool old stuff. I remember Bowie day the 70's. Was blessed to see him many times and jammed with his friends. He intimidated me. Met him in Chicago.
Thank you very much I have watched this twice already
Bowie seemed to lighten up after the 70s. He always seemed to be so happy in interviews in the 80s and 90s through to his death. Would have been cool to meet him then.
I really like when you make a conclusive definitive statement on a particular LP in your collection because then I go buy it- saves me a lot of money!
Great stories,awesome boxset RIP David!
Space Oddity was originally released under the title Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US in November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity.
Michael. Thanxx so much for making the video. Really well presented, and fantastic stories to boot. I am a proud owner of this box, and aesthetically speaking, I agree, a lot of thought has gone into it's production. Really wanna hear your thoughts on sound quality too. Not a vinyl expert,by a long shot, eagerly await your take regarding digital remastering, comparisons eg to original UK & Japanese releases of Aladdin sane etc etc. Hope you reply and let us all know soon. And get some brandy n honey for that frog in the throat. Thanx ;)
That's hilarious. Woody and Bolder bunking up in the supply closet and the bus driver's fannying about in the penthouse 😂
Hello Michel,, I hope your feeling better. Wow what an adventure you had back in the day! You lucky %$^. Most folks would give a part of their anatomy for the same experience.
Funny you started out selling records, I started in 74 selling stereo equipment.
Now waiting on your review, and investigation of source material for the mastering.
My fingers are crossed.
We have hope as you mentioned the EMI Centennial "Hunky" and the recent "Ziggy" are analog. I have some folks asking me if I am going to purchase the box for review on my channel. I have the original Japan glam rock pressings of the early Bowie records for comparison . just reviewed Santana mofi 45 rpm, and Cat Stevens Quality records 45 rpm
I agree with Jim Corbet digital sourced analogue is an oxymoron
I worked at Trident 1978-80 as a tea boy then tape op. In the tape library were some live Bowie and the masters for Ziggy, etc. Ray Staff was the Cutting engineer. Great times.
+Michael Fremer definitely. I tried to reach out to him as we are connected on Facebook but no response. I used to spend ages in the cutting room watching him at work. A record could live or die in there, it could be EQ'd to death, but you know that. Great video, thanks.
Awesome.
"and like a shmuck " , I love that, I haven't heard that word used casually in conversation since I lived in Pittsburgh, PA , as a kid back in 1983. There may just be a lot of shmucks in Pittsburgh.
very cool vid..really enjoyed it..take care mike
I have this box and think they are the best pressings. The Scott Ziggy LP to me sounds better than the others I have. Great box set, I am so pleased with it.
sad that only 8-9 weeks later Bowie would pass. Excellent video. I wish the viewing resolution was a little higher. Some fun stuff in this video I wish was a little clearer.
Outstanding, thank you.
You should start a regular series called " Opening Michael Fremer " Great to hear your Apple Rabbits bit and other secret favorites of yours on a great turntable with comments and adding your own perspective. Bruce
You are too cool, man. Extremely jelous, but this is a lifetime of collecting we're talking about. I feel like I'm in the room, and you are talking to me! Your a real cool cat, man!
Great video. Loved that satire on Rock and Roll. It's especially funny because a Rock career is so hit or miss (usually miss). Your chances of success are in lottery winning odds.
Michael, you mentioned what you say to famous people, musicians when meeting them. I am a musician (and IIRC you are too), and what I do is ask advice or something. Maybe something that connects as fellow musicians or just something I think they may not have heard a million times.
.... " bag of tricks " .... cool ... !! I used to have that TIME magazine !! .... love your passion & humor ... one last thing : peter gabriel also pioneered into theatrics + rock ...
Love the trip down memory lane Michael. As an aside, are you reviewing other speakers as it looks like your Wilsons are in storage behind you.
Awesome Vinylibrary! nice story happy holidays thanks for share
At 31:06 Michael mentions Nigel Reeve, who is Bowie's official archivist, which suggests there would have been access to the original tapes.
Love your Japanese animation. Nice review.
Fun info, but glazing over Pinups was dissapointing. We played-all the cuts-lots and lots of times!! Asked for another player copy for radio! Still love it.
RIP David
Hey so I just picked up a David Bowie the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and I was wondering if it's a 1980 re issue the number of it is AYL1-3843 and I spent $25 hopefully that's not too much for it hahah thanks man your videos are so Awesome!
When A Lad Insane came out i was trilled by the music .......and the drive, the emotion & power of the music on the album ..
25 years later i saw the reissue of the album ( digital remastered )........Gone was the music , the drive and the emotion ???????? What a deception . It sounded like using a thee bag twice and the thee has no flavor nor color left ...
I hope your edition is a good one ......did you compare to the original albums from the seventies ?
Enjoyed this video. I was debating whether to buy this or source the originals depending on which sounds better. Did you come to a conclusion as to which versions have the ultimate best sound of all the vinyl releases?
+Matthew Stuart : I think you would have difficulty sourcing originals that are in as almost new condition and if you did manage to they would be quite expensive. This Box's pressings are excellent with (as I noticed) improved mixes for Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust Soundtrack Live and you get the Rarities/B-sides collection.
Guru indeed and yes danced with Bowie.
Where the criticism of pressing quality ? is what's really interesting
I think his eyes are bloodshot from a toke he had a little while ago . I am a big Bowie fan also like Zappa ,CAN ,Hendrix , Miles Davis and Ray Baretto .
Would love to hear a follow up on how they sound
+Michael Fremer ..its full of nastys.,get it cleaned up.. but wot we really want is a youtube'licious result.
Michael, 1080p please. 1080p 60fps would be better still. 480p hurts the eyes.
Hi Michael... What's in the background? Looks like 2 or 3 ATMs (money machines)!
Never to old to rock and roll
You are always such an awesome guy to listen to. The passion is so obvious.
Two things that irritate me with these new records; "remastered" and "180g vinyl"
180g vinyl makes no difference if it is horribly manufactured, scratched and marked. Like the Beatles and Bon Jovi records I own that universal apparently spewed out of wherever. Pisses me off.
As for the labels on these, I think that what they did with the labels is kind of cool. I also think it is a shame that they did not use the original RCA labels nor have the RCA logo on the covers. I guess there could be a couple of reasons for that. Bowie hated RCA and I also don't think EMI wants to promote or pay another company just for accuracy.
Quite a collection of albums you have. Curious, how do you organize them so you can find something quickly you might want to play?
What do you think about the bowie picturedisc singles (life on mars and so on) ?
Hahaha 'if i offended you, tell your friends'. Luv it. Going to use that one for sure
This is so cool yayy.
Hey Michael - where do you store your vinyl box sets? Bowie, like many others, are too large for standard record shelves, like the ones behind you.
on deeper shelves obviously ..sheesh
Still miss him.
So how did they sound?
I love This video.
did he do a follow up after listening to the vinyl?
Excellent
Thanks
Well, how did they sound?
so, is it from master tape
SPARS rating?
Really like the part at 4:30
Interesting quote Bowie gave regarding digital CDs and why anyone would still buy vinyl. In short, he called those people crazy.
Now on another topic, if you had to listen to CDs and wanted to get a decent sounding stereo to play CDs...what might you pick? WhTs your thoughts on playing CDs through a Blu-Ray system with a 5.1 all in be type system...say a Samsung, Panasonic, or Sony?
+Analog Planet I don't know if he's talking about a different quote but the one I'm thinking of is from an interview on Letterman. He's got the limited edition Vinyl as a sort of show off copy Heathen and Letterman says something like "why do some people want some of them on Vinyl" to which Bowie laughs and responds "they're crazy" laughs some more and then says "I download everything on this internet so... I don't bother with any format" the clip is on youtube called david bowie I download everything on the internet and I don't think it's anything to do with sound quality.
RCA was a low quality sounding label
Rykodisc out of Salem MA
You keep talking about him in the past tense, this was posted before he died. How'd you know?
Great 👍🏻
