Funny that you say that…lol. This group recently did covers of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters.” And Eli (the bald guy) really gets to shine with his rock tenor sound. And you also get to see how much the group sound has grown since this cover. Definitely recommend.

My day is made when I find someone reacting to Voiceplay for the first time!
The Sing-Off producers required Voiceplay to have a female lead singer. They did not require that of Home Free who won that season. Their creativity and artistry was stifled by the restrictions. They are completely independent, no label, no manager, just complete artistic control. This means that they are not as well known and don't get the publicity that other groups do.
They do almost everything themselves, arranging, production, editing, sets, costumes, and makeup. For more complex videos they will use a camera crew and makeup artists. Ed Boyer does the final mix, as he does for several other acapella groups.
    Suggestions for Voiceplay:
I Can't Make You Love Me - heartbreaking
    Nothing Else Matters - amazing
Golden Hour - weird, funny, and heartwarming. Trust me.
Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay (and eventually Geoff).

Okay, from the original Sing-off group there are Geoff, the bass, Layne, the human drum kit, and Eli(pronounced like Jelly), the bald one, is the tenor. Earl, the one you recognized, left for personal reasons , and the other was Tony , who now owns Pattycake Productions along with Layne. The newest Tenor/baritone is Cesar(on the far left). Jose was in the middle as the features artist. At this point the group only has four members, but they consistantly hit it out of the park with features artists that they bring in. Thank you for your reaction. I enjoy finding new reactors to Voiceplay, so have fun with this new rabbithole.

Since the Sing Off, via encouragement from Tim, Geoff challenged himself.
He has become well known for using subharmonics, and can sing down to an F#1 in chest. (Subharmonic range roughly B1 to B0.)
Eli is a beast and rock god. They've done Carry On Wayward Son, Nothing Else Matters, and a few others that feature him in rock mode.
As well, if anything, since the Sing Off, Layne has gotten crazier.

I have to admit, I really love when someone who actually knows something about music is gobsmacked by their performance. I always feel it's rather to be expected that a 'casual' listener's jaw is going to drop when they hear that first low note from Geoff, or that his eyebrows will raise when hearing the fantastic beatboxing by Layne, rock tenor grit from Eli or first hear Cesar's haunting, heartfilled tone. But appreciation from someone's whose 'work' is music is just a little more justification for my belief that they are extraordinary musicians. Like getting the 'People's Choice' award is nothing to be sneezed at, but getting a grammy voted on by your musical peers is just more rewarding as a validation of your actual talent.
I agree that the Sing Off didn't begin to showcase their talents and if they had to have a female singer with them, Rachel Potter, a frequent collaborator with them, would have been a much better choice had she been available. Honey did seem to be presented as their 'lead' singer rather than a member of their ensemble.
I really hope you look for more of their videos to react to. If nothing else, you MUST experience their "Nothing Else Matters" that was recently released. It is just an amazing piece!
VoicePlay has really been doing increasingly amazing work for the past 3-4 years or so, and it, funnily enough, also coincides with the pandemic hitting and Geoff letting his hair grow, LOL. Also greatly developed during this time has been Geoff's work in developing his subharmonics from being able to occasionally use it to hit a really deep note to starting to have an amazing ability to slip in and out of subharmonics with an ease that is just incredible. Now that we're all used to seeing Geoff with long hair, it's fun for someone to watch one of their older videos and not recognize him with short hair and complain about, "Why isn't Geoff here?", followed by, "Now, wait a minute, I HEAR him, where is he?". to "OMG, the guy with short hair is Geoff!!!"

They are #TheatreKidsOfACapella. Welcome to the rabbit hole. It's amazing that they do everything themselves. Lighting, sets, costumes, Arrangements, filming, editing, Geoff Castellucci, Layne, Eli, and Cesar are the four current members. The others that are missing from the sing-off are Earl and Tony.

You nailed Eli's talent - we fans often think of him as a utility player because you name it, he'll do it. Beautifully. (Including drop to an A1 to back up Geoff, the bass.) Before VP, he fronted a Metallica cover band, so yeah, he can pull out the grit and metal edge whenever he chooses. Please take a look at their cover of Nothing Else Matters, and also their cover of Golden Hour (just released Friday). It'll give you a sense of their breadth. Geoff has his own channel as well, and does stunning solo work there. They do 99% of their own arrangements, split pretty evenly between Geoff and Layne (the beatbox), both founding members. This song was one of Geoff's.

They have come a long way since the sing off. Eli is the bald tenor. Geoff is the bass. Layne is the beatboxer, and Cesar is the bari/tenor on the far left. They are still a 4 squad marty, but the guests they bring in for every song makes them crazy diverse in their sound. It is great

Original members, all the way back to middle school, were Layne/beatboxer, Geoff/bass, and Earl/ crazy high tenor, who is the person that you noticed was missing.
They’ve gone through a number of baritones which isn’t surprising since they’ve been around for over 25 years. When Scott Porter left to pursue an acting career, Layne switched from baritone to beat boxing and they brought in Tony Wakim who is now Layne’s business partner in Pattycake Productions studio.
After the sing off Tony decided touring just was not his thing but still contributes behind the camera when they film at Pattycake Productions which is pretty common. Tony can be seen in the Phantom of the Opera cover with Rachel Potter who is their most frequent collaborator. Another that I really enjoy is the version of Road Trip that they did while they were on the Sing Off tour and they were actually allowed to do their thing as opposed to the network’s thing. He’s also in Grim Grinning Ghosts which I highly recommend for Halloween.
When Tony left JNone came in at the baritone position and was with them until 2021. The Navy snatched him up for his singing ability for a five-year stint and he is the front man for their Pacific Northwest band. He still comes in quite often as his family seems to be located in Orlando area and whenever he comes home on leave they try and grab him for a quick collaboration. Many of us hope that he will be coming back for good when he finishes with the Navy. Most recently he appeared with them in the cover of Nothing Else Matters.
When J left Cesar Delarosa took over the baritone/tenor position. They’ve been one member short since her left in 2020.
In this iteration you can see in the back row Cesar Delarosa in one of his first appearances with them as a permanent member. Jose Rosario Jr is the feature performer although he is not the person originally slated for that position.
Originally they had another artist in mind who can really belt as well but he couldn’t make it due to Covid restrictions. Jose was already home because his production of Hamilton in Chicago had shut down due to Covid and he took the spot.
Eli had originally been slated for the part that Jose covered but he ended up recording the part originally set aside for the original feature performer. Jose took Eli’s part. They almost always put their featured artist in the center and they usually get more of the lines. (He and Cesar attended high school together).
Next to the Jose is Eli Jacobson the rock God. He easily has the most versatile voice. In front are Layne Stein and Geoff Castellucci.

Welcome to Voiceplay's rabbit hole 😁.
"Sing off" wasn't quite in their vibe. They were kinda forced to put a lot of emphasis on things they just weren't their cup of tea... They weren't feeling at ease with that. But they give their best when they can do their thing. 🙂
I think you kinda missed Geoff's 2 octave jump up at about 6'40" of your video... There were so many things happening that it's understandable 😁. It's still one of the Geoff's feats that impresses me most. That guy is just beyond human. 🙂
Eli, the Rock God... Watch their version of "My Mother told me", again featuring Jose Rosario Jr., to have a better look at that aspect of him. Or their cover of Metallica's "Nothing else matters", or, as you yourself said... their take of Aerosmith's "Dream On", which BTW is just ridiculously good. 🙂
Or, to see their funny side, try "In the hall of the Mountain King", featuring Elizabeth Garozzo. 😁
I'd suggest also their versions of "The Dragonborn comes", "I can't make you love me", "Can't help falling in love", "Tennessee whiskey", "Carry on wayward son", "Enemy"... and pretty much whatever you'll find in their catalogue on their channel 😁.
Just subscribed, wanna see your next step in the journey through this rabbit hole.
And don't forget Geoff's solo channel... He just released a cover of "Sound of Silence" that is a beauty, but has LOTS of beautiful stuff there. 🙂

They struggled in The Sing-Off because the producers suggested they take on a female singer just to be a bit different, and they didn't really have time to gel as a group. No disrespect to Honey LaRochelle, she was amazing, but they just didn't really know how to arrange for and be a group rather than a female lead, a beatboxer, and four backup singers. Sometimes The Sing-Off interference paid off -- they were the ones who suggested Home Free lean into their country roots -- but it didn't really work out for VoicePlay.

    @allisoncameron-dicker2737 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole... I live in the UK so had never seen or heard of the Sing Off... however, since discovering VP, I have watched it on here... I became aware that S.O had required VP to have a female singer in the group.... (Not a stipulation they had put on other groups, which does make me wonder if they were trying to manipulate votes a certain way.).....I'm not saying that having a female in the group was bad... I just think that all the practice and arranging had probably only been done primarily with the normal line up and that this put them at a disadvantage.... For me, an a cappella group is exactly that.. Being all male, all female or a mix shouldn't make a difference to an entry to the show........Ahem!! just saying lol.... As for Voiceplay.. I originally found them on YT while I was looking for some Disney songs for the grandkids... I've been following them for a good couple of years now and their talent, arrangements, editing, costuming, lighting etc has just gone from great to phenomenal.. I don't pretend to love everything they've done, but I do appreciate the work ethics and the sound they have. In my humble opinion, they are tops.... Their videos are financed by patreons. This makes them all the more impressive to me.. They are not just standing looking pretty, while someone else decides where they have to stand, when they can eat etc (you know what I mean)...... Of course, as with most things... life, personal reasons , health and the US Navy have made a difference to the line up.... As I'm sure others have mentioned.. Earl left for the aforementioned personal reasons.. Tony left to concentrate more on Pattycake Studios which he co owns with Layne... They enlisted J.None, who sang with them until last year I think when he joined the Navy.... Cesar then joined as the group's baritenor.. They have collaborators such as Jose and often Omar Cardona who was in The Voice USA.. (also sing with them in Dream on and Dragonborn comes among others)... Their Christmas song collaborator was DJ Young who is touring with Hamilton... I can't recommend this group enough... As you mentioned Aerosmith, you should check out Vp's version of Dream on, Metallica, Nothing else matters, Tennessee whiskey is a must as well as Carry on my Wayward son..... Geoff's solo channel has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years... His version of Ghost riders in the sky is my personal favourite, his cover of Sound of silence is up there with it too... Along with Shenandoah and Ain't no sunshine....... I'm subscribing in the anticipation of more of VP and subsequently Geoff.

With the arrangements that Geoff or Layne is developing for every project, how Eli is taking care of ligtning and how the stage is staged, they help each other to shine and their PLAYfulness with their VOICEs is always in front. The fact that trey do all the work to produce a music video by themselves, makes it only better, because the message is in the entire production.

Voiceplay formed in 1997 under the name 4:2:Five with original members Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein, Scott Porter, Earl Elkins Jr and Mikal Kilmore.
Scott left for a very successful acting career in 2003 so Geoff , bass, taught Layne beatboxing and Layne took it from there. He is also a baritone.
Mikal left in 2002 for Broadway.
Eli (like jelly) Jacobson, tenor /rock tenor, joined in 2010. Tony Wakim, baritone, joined in 2011. And they changed their name in 2012.
Tony left in 2016 to go behind the scenes and be half of Pattycake Productions with Layne. J None replaced Tony in 2018.
Earl, tenor, left in 2020 for unknown personal reasons. No replacement has been found for him as yet.
J None left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy. He was a Musician. He recently got promoted to Musician 1 and moved from Washington to Washington DC.
Cesar De La Rosa, baritone/tenor, joined in 2021 to replace J None.
They collaborate with various artists for the 5th.
In their recent video, Drunken Sailor, they had 2 extra. One was the drunken sailor and didn't sing.
Geoff has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. He clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Each with their own name and personality.... Jeff, Jeoph, Goff and Daryl.
These guys are also known as "The Kings of Halloween". Their Halloween videos are phenomenal. Hide and Seek (ding dong) is my favorite.
The first video I watched of Voiceplay is Dragonborn Comes Skyrim.
The first video I watched of Geoff was Ain't No Sunshine.
The first I watched of Pattycake Productions was Villains Haunted Mansion.

The main problem they had in the Sing Off was the same one that caused some issues for PTX the next year. They were told "you really need X". in their case they were advised to partner with a female soloist. As you watch more, you will see all 4 tend to fall in line behind the lead vocal, and having the lead be someone who had several years as a soloist fails to give the group the structure it needed.

One of my favourites/ It's quite an experience. Geoff and Tim have a very similar range but you can tell the difference in tone. Geoff has a very unique smoothness to his bass. Yes, they have changed since Sing Off days. I think Tony Wakim was with them then, certainly Earl Elkins Jnr was but he left in 2020. Eli, the bald guy has sung with rock bands in the past, so yes. The newest member of the group is Cesar de la Rosa, in the white shirt. And yes, they have come a long way since those days. No the guy in the middle was a guest, Jose Rosario. VoicePlay's arrangements are second to none and are usually done by either Layne, the beatboxer, or Geoff, the bass.

Earl is the one you are thinking of.....he LEFT the group.........Tony was on the sing off, he is part owners with Layne in Pattycake Productions where they do mot of their videos....current lineup is Geoff, Cesar, Eli, Layne, with featured guests......J.None was with the group from 2018-2021, enlisted in the Navy, when on leave he comes back as a featured singer...Eli the "rock god" Voiceplay recently did cover of Metalica's Nothing else matters, Aerosmith's Dream On, and Kansas's Carry On My Wayward Son.....

Now that you mention Aerosmith, VoicePlay's (featuring Omar Cardona's) cover of "Dream On" is fantastic! th-cam.com/video/SEz9VFmvG_I/w-d-xo.html

No, they weren't this good in the Sing-Off. They've improved a LOT since then. The first thing they did that I'd call really good, was Phantom of the Opera, and they didn't start hitting it out of the park on a regular basis, until just before J-None joined them. Hoist is in the running for being the best thing they've ever done, though I personally lean toward Mountain King. But yeah, if you haven't heard them since the Sing-Off, you need to catch up with their more recent work, because a lot of it is fantastic.
The guy you recognized in the Moana thumbnail is Earl; he was their countertenor for most of the group's history.
Honey, the female vocalist who joined them for the Sing-Off, was quite talented, but of all the many guest artists they've worked with, she is the only one who, in my opinion, didn't add much value to the group, and I don't know why, because the potential was there, they just didn't do anything worthwhile with it for some reason.
