  • Preparing for a whippet puppy - what you need to be prepard for, before taking your first whippet puppy home. As you may know, sighthounds are very specific and different from other dogs, both on the outside and on the inside, so I thought this video might be helpful to some of you.

    I remember when we got our boy and we put a baby gate up and was surprised when it was up that he was in the kitchen! He was small and slim enough to get through the bars! 😂
    Our boy had a double faux fur blanket that he would wrap himself inside it.
    We bought him an inside coat too.
    He was NOT allowed to sleep in our bed or sofa. (Doesn’t mean he didn’t learn how to open our bedroom doors and sleep on them whilst we were out!) 😂
    One piece of advice if you have not had one before they are very, very sensitive dogs and can be very nervous.
    If I was to get another one I would definitely get 2 to keep each other company and entertained. Double trouble but double the fun!
    I was told by a dog trainer I would never get my Whippet to fetch a ball. Challenge accepted. We trained him within 6 weeks! He loved his ball.
    Enjoy your Whippets. ♥️

    "Congratulations, you're about to become a slave.”
    LOL more like you’re about to become a slave that permanently shares your bed and couch with a Whippet. Note to any partners of Whippet owners: buy a comfortable fold-out couch bed b/c you may end up wanting an emergency place to sleep. 🤣
    So wonderful of you to put out such a detailed description of what Whippet pups are like since, as you accurately said, some newbies don’t do enough research into the breed. Imo if unexperienced people have met a grown Whippet, especially ones that are timid/quiet, some assume that’s how they are when they’re little. I think Bo Bengston described living with a Whippet puppy as akin to sharing your house with a live squirrel running around!

      That's is so true, but I have to leave a little bit of "surprise factor" for the newbies LOL once they get their heart melted and their brains washed they will figure out all of the sacrifices they will be willing to make 😅
      Thank you for reminding me of Bo's description. It's a very accurate one LOL

      How did you get on?? we collected ours on Monday 7th June {9 weeks old exactly} ..She is very well socialised. It is definitely harder 'Alone' but doable.
      The advice given in this video is so true! ..Everything 'forbidden' she is drawn to like a pin to a magnet! And she crashes through my garden plants...never mind! She is so fun to have around.

      Nice congratulations! I got mine on June 5th from a breeder in Ocala, FL. She was born on April 1st. The potty training is tough right now because my whole apartment is carpeted….🤬 she goes pee outside every time I take her, but goes again a few minutes after I take her inside. Very frustrating! I still love her though 🥰

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@papaspracticeroom4598 Ahh, ours was born on April 5th!
      My house is largely rugs {Persian type} so I am really diligent about 'House training'...
      so far....not one wee or poo indoors! {I'm sure it will happen though}🙃
      BUT..... Never use those ''Puppy pads'' or paper...They just teach a dog that it is ok to eliminate in the house.
      I had a rescue dog years ago, who belonged to Gypsies, and the rescue place I got her from had some really good advice re house training.. {RSPCA animal centre}
      ''Young pups need to wee /poo
      When they wake up
      After they have eaten
      Every 2/3 hrs ''
      Do you have a ''Code word'' you say when you see her do a wee??
      The minute you see her squat, say ''Wee Bizzies'' over and over.. in an excited, happy voice.. and 'Good Girl!'
      When she squats for a poo, say ''Poo Bizzies! ''in an excited voice...and the minute she has finished, give her a tiny treat or a fuss.
      Unlike us, they CAN and DO do ''dual Wees''
      Eg, do a little one, and then a bigger one 5 minutes later. 🙄🙂
      As you {Like me} have carpets/rugs...it is VITAL you strip the scent from the carpet where she has wee'd in the past.
      Dr Roger Mugford mentions this essential 'odour stripping' in his book about dog training .
      A puppy will often return to the same spot to do a wee..drawn by the scent of the old ones.
      There was a very good solution that a pet shop sold for this.. it stripped the odour of wee from the carpet. It uses enzymes to break down the oils in dog urine.
      Roxy
      Bio Tex {Enzymes}does the same thing, but may cause ''Clean spots'' on your carpets
      I'd restrict her indoors until she is fully house trained...I carry mine out and put her on the grass.
      Don't tell them off for wee-ing or poo-ing in the house...if you catch her mid squat, carry her to the garden!..Ignore 'mistakes' and praise eliminating outdoors.
      Mine tends to choose the 'same' places for wees and poos outdoors, so scent must be a 'trigger' for them.
      I'm sure you will manage to train her..
      Let me know how you get on :)
      My 'Bugaboo' is her making a noise 🎼 {Squeaks and quavery squinnying }at night in her crate...I am sleeping on the sofa and take her out twice in the night when she wakes for a wee {they can't hold for long...maybe 2-3 hrs tops} and last night she was whining and rattling her crate AFTER having a wee..
      They are very clever though...and I was warned only to open the crate when she is quiet. 🤫

    I never thought of my whippets as being naughty...they just need constant supervision early in life. They lived for my approval so I cannot say they were ever naughty, just sometimes mistaken. A sharp "No!" was enough to stop unwanted behaviors, along with heaps of praise when they were engaged in wanted behavior. Long after they were potty trained, they still received praise for every "good potty". I also never felt like a slave, but rather that I had a wonderful hobby, nurturing a living thing in such a way as to produce something very beautiful, not unlike growing flowers. They turn out as good as you make them. That said, if you do not find pouring your attention into your puppy rewarding, perhaps it is not for you. I was working from home when I raised my whippets, so I was able to provide them with constant supervision, and they provided me with constant companionship. It does take a round the clock commitment to get optimum results, but I have never engaged in a more satisfying endeavor in my life. I also raised two litters of puppies and it brought me a sublime joy like nothing else, and allowed me to provide some wonderful lifelong companions to 11 lucky people. The whippet is the most amazing and compatible breed of dog, for me.

      A very experienced Whippet person {Her mother had them before her} said she isn't a fan of 'Harnesses' because of Whippet's shoulders..She recommended a Martingale collar or traditional ''wide'' Whippet collar. {I am getting a Whippet puppy in first week of June @ 9 weeks old from her}..

    I am getting a whippet puppy in a few weeks. Our fence is only four feet. I know the recommendation is 5 to 6 feet. I have greyhounds and it has not been a problem. Any advice?

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Karin! That's very exciting ❤ Whippets can jump very high, but sometimes they don't know they have this superpower. My advise is to supervise them when they are outdoors, especially when they reach adulthood. The chance they try to jump the fence is low, as they like to be around their people, however they might try if they see a cat/squirrel/bird or anything else that triggers them. We have 2 feet tall fence around some parts of the grass and only 1 of our whippets (out of 7) knows she can jump it.
