Wife and I drove down from Georgia to see Atlantis, final shuttle launch, truly beautiful launch and was incredible to be there live. I was 11 years old, 1961 when Allen Shepard launched for his sub-orbital flight. Mama let me stay home from school long enough to watch...1961 to 2011...I've seen the first and the last 😪 It was a bitter sweet moment! I always get a chill when the flight director says "your go for throttle up" I get Challenger flash back. I was working for BellSouth in Atlanta, was at JC Penny's at Perimeter Mall installing data circuits...walked over to the TV department to watch the launch...its just something you never forget, it was difficult to comprehend what just happened in that moment of time. Seven crew members gone in an instant on live TV...everyone was crying, me included. It was difficult to get back to work.

I don't know why but I always always love when Mission control counts something down for the crew and then says MARK at zero.
Atlantis was my favorite of the shuttle fleet. One of the later orbiters built, it had the glass cockpit and it had a pretty impeccable record. It also might have a little to do with the fact I watched Space Camp over 100 times as a 6-7 year old.
All the orbiters were updated to the glass cockpit.
I was just telling my 9yo daughter we need to watch Space Camp! I only saw it once when I was a kid but it stuck with me. At that age it's really inspiring.

It did look rough though. I've just watched a differentr flight and the launch on that one looked smooth as hell, just a little jolt on takeoff and the rest was smooth. In this one they looked like they were really getting the G's early after launch. Check out how pinned back they look compared to some other flights.

I probably didn't phrase it well. it's not really about G's the main difference I spot in launches is how much they get shook around (some launches look silky smooth and some look borderline violent) and you're right, thats going to be more of a weather thing than a G thing so I think you're spot on.

I think I speak for all Americans when I say that the shuttle and all those who supported it and the crews that fly it had on that fateful day secured their place in history! For 30 years America proved why we're the best at spaceflight and why we've accomplished so much, to all those at NASA who supported this outstanding piece of American engineering and ingenuity God bless all of you and thanks so much for all you did, you made Americans everywhere so very proud!
The more you understand what's going on in a shuttle launch, the more you realize how insane it was to do that!
All astronauts seem to have a sweet wonderous childlike quality to them.

I love watching anything with the space shuttles. I miss watching the shuttles launch and land I miss all of it. I wish we could have a new shuttle, it's just not the same with all these new space stuff.
Thank you for these great memories! I was eight when Armstrong set first foot on the Moon and now when being fifty, I had the chance to view and hear this cockpit communication from last flight of the Shuttle!

I was there and man when the clock held at T-minus 31 seconds, I think all our hearts skipped a beat. We were so close and now a scrub?? A few moments later we heard a cheer coming from up front and could only assume it was good. Then we heard the call out of resuming the countdown. What a roller coaster ride that was. Incredible memory I shared with my mom and oldest son. I can't wait until we start sending people back up. Sure it won't be shuttle but I'll take what I can get. :)

I was lucky enough to see Atlantis trailing the ISS prior to docking from just south of Sydney Australia.
Amazing to see two spacecraft in orbit.

Could just make out the shape of the ISS but Atlantis was just a bright dot that was trailing it as it caught up to it.
I use the web site 'Heavens above' to find when the ISS is passing over.
This footage makes me so happy... Proud we were witness to such an amazing program

I can't get over how it sounds almost like a quiet jet engine after SRB sep even when there's just the three huge SSME's going in the back!
The astronauts reported that you cannot image the "shake rattle and roll" when the solids are firing - then when the solids are jettisoned - it's like "electric drive" smooth and quiet but you feel yourself getting pressed back in the seat as you accelerate to eventually 17,500 MPH. Who wouldn't get a thrill out of that ride?

Being born and raised and still living 40 mins north west of the cape I have seen countless shuttle launches and watching the on board cameras never gets old. I will always miss the space shuttle. The SpaceX launches are cool but they don't come close to the beauty of the shuttle launches and landings. The sonic booms of the shuttle coming in will always be unforgettable. I was 15 when we didn't hear the sonic booms from Columbia, each SB after that was truly a blessing to hear

Fantastic ride is an understatement that was hands down absolutely the most amazing launch footage I have ever seen. I like that stretch they did at 3g Just watching those guys faces I could almost feel the sensation well I would never know what it feels like for them I just know it was awesome.
If you ever get the chance to go to Disney World in Orlando Fl, Mission Space simulates 2.5G on launch. It’s an experience being pushed back into your seat like that let me tell you.

Joel Heffner it’s longer than 2 years if you consider the fact they had to have 1000 hours flight time in jet powered aircraft and a degree in either science maths or engineering. They prepare there whole lives for this

+This Is The Multiverse .. and if you listen closely... they explain/accept it as "cabin stretch".... the inverse of a submarine getting smaller at depth from the underwater pressure.... as the cabin gets larger (stretches), the internal cabin pressure necessarilyy decreases. What an incredible machine.

In person there at the VAB ~3 miles out from LC-39A, incredible, emotional, unreal to see the last flight of STS with several good friends and business associates - Fortunate to have worked on the program and others along with many talented engineers and beyond - End of an era... \m/

Ive probably watched this video atleast a couple dozen times, and it never gets old.
That was a great time period outside of Challenger and Columbia but I have a great feeling that were slowly easing into an even better one of human space travel.
Col Doug Hurley there in the pilot seat (on the left of the screen, in position 2, ie the pilot seat being on the right of the flight deck).
Flew on the last Space Shuttle mission then was Commander of Crew Dragon Demo 2, nine years later.
In 2011, piloted what was then the last spaceflight to launch from US soil, and in 2020, just 3 months ago, commanded the next American launched spaceflight.
One of the first humans (Together with Bob Behnken) to launch on a commercial orbital spaceflight in human history (on Crew Dragon D2).
Awesome guy. Amazing accomplishments.

Hard to believe there were nine years between here, the final shuttle launch, with Doug Hurley in the pilot's seat, and SpaceX Demo-2, with Hurley in the commander's seat. Officially....one of the extreme few to do back to back launches in the American space program!

Watched this launch from almost 200 miles west at about the place the SRB's fall off. The exhaust plume from the SSME's was visible all the way to orbit...a huge pale white wake of steam.

The Shuttle years were an exciting time in the history of space exploration and travel...
I lived in central Florida during this time, and was witness to almost every launch.
I would like to recognize the families and friends of all who lost their loved ones over the years, during the space shuttle era, and those from the very beginning of man's explorations into the cosmos 🙏
2:30 - Mission Commander’s launch words. Incredible. If that doesn’t grip you in the chest, I don’t know what will.
Every foot they go up gravity is getting less and less then he casually says, "Welcome to space guys!" and they go weightless - just incredible.
I am going to let my nerd self do the explaining here.
Whilst yes, the gravitational pull of the earth weakens as you go away from it, the true zero g of the experience comes from the fact that you are essentially eternally free falling, but you’re going so fast you never hit the ground.

+Guitarfollower22 First reason is that that is a natural position while laying on your back. Second reason is , that is where their HIU (headset interface unit) is located clipped to their seat belt. Its a comm box to talk when they push a button. You can see it on the pilot. Its gray.

Yes, that no confirmation of beanie cap retraction. I was at Titusville Space View Park and heard the "hold" and a launch window closing. My issue that I was planning to see Barbara Eden couple days later at Castro Theater in SF (video for someone that will interview her). I was faced if launch was scrubbed should I stay and miss Barbara or go home and miss the STS-135 launch?

Alarm going off at 17:52. Cabin leak advisory, caused by cabin stretching and contortion due to acceleration during ascent. Normal occurrence so crew was told disregard message.
The Guy in the back just kept fooling with his microphones, over and over and over. He was really nerves and the one next to him just sat still and very cool.
I miss these launches of the Shuttles. They were a sight and sound spectacle. I cannot wait till the next manned launch in the US with the new Space Launch System and the Orion Crew Capsule in 2020! Would love to go see it in person. We’ll see. 🚀🇺🇸

Cluck Nuggets I hope they get it going on time now. Saw an article that the Orion Capsule arrive at Kennedy after testing at the Plum Brook facility in Ohio. Passed all the tests. They are now looking at mid 2021 for unmanned launch with Artemis to the a Moon. Hope it goes well from now on! I’m getting to old to wait a few more years 😉😉

@@HooyahPeacock So your saying that astronauts are not brave ? There were 135 space shuttle missions. Two of which ended in disaster. So if we divide 135 in half one out of every 67 flights ended in death and disaster. If you drove you car 67 times and it then blew up and killed you you would not drive my friend.

On ascent the cabin sensors sense the air is thinning out indicating a leak but in reality the cabin is just stretching due to the thinning atmosphere outside and the full atmosphere inside.
@justinnanu4338 @jrockett73 the forces of launch combined with the changing pressure during ascent causes the inside of the cabin to stretch very slightly like when you add a tiny bit of air to an already inflated balloon. Because the volume of the cabin gets ever so slightly larger but the amount of air inside that cabin remains the same the sensors see it as a thinning of the atmosphere in the cabin... something that can also occur if there is a leak. The good thing is if the reduction is small and then stabilizes they know it's NOT a leak but rather just a trick on the sensor because of the cabin's stretching. when the alert comes they ask Rex what you see, I think they meant on the cabin pressure gauges but he instead responds... 3 at 104, a reading of the normal engine thrust he is looking at on the gauges in front of him. Sandy on the other hand in the back begins checking and reads off the slightly negative atmospheric pressure change she sees which the commander recognizes as too small a change to be a threat and he then says is likely due to cabin stretch... which about a second later is confirmed verbatim from ground control who has reached the same conclusion. later sandy confirms the cabin atmosphere has stabilized at a normal level and formally confirms there is no leak. while this alarm did not occur on most launches, the stretch was always on the border of causing it so it did happen time to time and by this point in the shuttle program was a well understand process that all crews were aware could occur and that it wasn't a real issue.
