well, for some of us who have been really trying to get into more detailed animation in gp and have a good grasp of regular/ the rest of blender, this is actually perfect. this guy laid out sketch, ink, paint, tweening, and comp in a matter of seconds. Yeah, I like blender more to be honest. Although you don’t have the same toolset since blenders grease pencil like vector graphics in 3d space. You can still achieve painterly style, but it’s not as easy as just painting in photoshop. For doing flat colors and linear blender is fine. I’m waiting for the 4.3 version as they announced updated grease pencil. Should become even better soon
It was, but that is more about the drawing of each keyframe. You can basically draw 1 frame for still shots, and it will feel dynamic with that noise modifier.
Thanks a lot! Yeah, that's semi 3D. Basically a mesh with a projected painting. This is done for the cases when you move camera so you can feel and see the volume. Here is the video where i explain how its done on another example - th-cam.com/video/IOuBC1OeODc/w-d-xo.html . I have at least 3 videos on this topic on my channel, if you want to explore the techniques.
I love your blender stuff. please keep them coming and also can you by any chance make them a bit longer and more Indepth if you have the time. Super engaging content. I've got a question: do you paint in the light as well or can you light it in blender?
Thanks a lot! Projection mapping is coming up next! Regarding the lighting. you can probably make the grease pencil dynamically react to the light source and still look decent, i haven't tried this yet. For the environment lighting, i painted light on the textures. You can mix 3d and 2d lighting for the environments pretty decently imo
I think you should make a 5-10 hours video for us.😂 With many type movement, material, rain, sparkle, how to make a long video on it...need a total guide.
I think imma study blender moving forward. I get too lazy learning again a new software while this can really improve your workflow. Especially the parallax, interpolation and other fx. Mind if you can post the orig speed of your process? Great video! Thank you for sharing! :)
To be honest, I'm super happy that i started exploring Blende couple years ago. Every time i discover new ways of doing things and it gets me excited. Obviously it all depends on what you're using it for and what's your personal goals. Regarding the process, maybe one day i'll have a well documented process. Now its a bit of a mess and I cant really spend time editing that. One, if im lucky, I will design a course or something. That would be much better imo
Actually how? How did you create parallax? And why did paint it all in Krita? Ho did export that grease pencil drawing? This video left me with more questions than answers. Could you explain with more detail what actually happened in this video?
This is very good that you start to get questions. Each are those are very specific and now you can solve them one by one, understanding the process completely. Now for the questions. Parallax is created by making mid ground rock and the frog separately from the background and having them on a decent distance, on top of that, parallax works only when the camera moves, so I made the camera to move forward in the animation Painting in 2d is always faster and easier than in blender. You can still paint the textures in blender but if you do 2d art, it’s better to use the typical 2d software for concept art or painting with all the brushes you’re using for your 2d art. To export the GP object, you just render raw lineart( turn off everything else) and save the render as png or JPEG. Alternatively you can just copy-paste the render into krita. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. But it a good thing to ask questions. Having a right question is a big part of the solution.
me gustaría mucho ver un tutorial como este pero en tiempo real. como no entiendo mucho el ingles, me es muy dificil entender lo que dices, te quedó realmente buena la animacion, gracias
Hello Poly! I just found your video while looking for blender tutorials. Should I learn how to draw first or how to properly use blender first? I'm feeling overwhelmed and really struggling to get started. My goal is to make 2D animation videos.😔
Hey! For 2d animation, drawing is essential. There is no way around that imo. You can do 3d animation with stylized shading that looks semi-2d without drawing skill, but in the end, drawing is just beneficial for understanding composition, design, color. So I’d encourage to learn 2d regardless the end goal 💪
Saw the word beginner and watched it. Then saw u draw that almost realistic sketch and had my heart drop to stomach…. Man I can barely draw something and it’s not even close to this 😅
It takes time to learn, that's true. Although, knowing your tools helps facilitating your process and you can keep focused on art. Dont be discouraged and learn by doing! 💪
You also animate objects in Z-depth? Like making an object pass in front of and behind layers, without adjusting/changing the hierarchy of the layers? & is there a shortcut for it?
If I understood the question correctly, then you should just place your strokes in a right order in 3d space. That’s the benefit of having it in 3d. GP doesn’t work too well with the z depth sometimes and you can get a fighting if you have lots of layered GP layers or object and it’s confusing to blender what’s in front. But for simple scenes with couple view planes placing them correctly in 3d space should work fine. Eg if in one frame your GP character is begins the stone, then you on another one you move the strokes in front of the stone and it will appear in front.
How do we render the image in 3D ? Or that the image follows the 3D form ? I didn’t understand anything about this detail😭 But your work is incredible🥰
I’m using a 3d plane with a texture for my 2d images. For the one with the volume, I modelled it out of 2d plane. I have 2 videos about this process check them out: th-cam.com/video/hM_uhazFOl0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=W_SvdF6GxOAjt3Dn th-cam.com/video/IOuBC1OeODc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yCk2mbHv1z7T1Zki
Amazing stuff! I indeed subscribed. How would you transition to a different scene? I have some drawings on paper that I would like to scan and then create animated transactions. Maybe After Effects is better for this but I wanna try to do it in Blender.
There are some tools to convert images to Grease pencil in Blender. GP is a vector-like tool, if you want to do raster animation its def better to go with other software for that. Check NijiiGpen addon for blender, it can convert your black and white lineart to Grease pencil. Here is the doc: chsh2.github.io/nijigp/docs/functionality/io/vectorizing_images/ And the addon itself : github.com/chsh2/nijiGPen?tab=readme-ov-file
@@PolyPaint Thank you for the reply. You mean convert the drawing into vectors and them importing them into Blender to retouch/animate? Or you meant a plug-in/addon for Blender that will convert to vector?
@@soniferous This plugin can convert image to a grease pencil lineart and you can use it to finish your animation. I haven't tried this feature tho but this addon is amazing. I used it to cleanup my rough lineart and fill the whole animation almost automatically. it works like a charm
Yeah, that’s a valid approach. Although if it’s 2d animation, you’d have to redo that in blender. I used photoshop to do a concept of a coloring and lighting before doing that in blender and it definitely saves time . I then copied the image in grease pencil and used color picker to colorize it directly from the concept art.
Hey man just one question, once you have drawn all the frames, after that, GP allows you to configurate in the timeline 1/1 (24fps), 2/2(12fps) ? Cheers.
Hey. You can set up the framerate in the Output settings at any time. But that doesnt influence your keyframe placement. It makes the animation feel slower or faster. if you go from 24fps to 12 fps, then your final animation will be x2 longer and slower. If you're animating on two's you can scale down your frames on a timeline relative to the start by 200% and you will get 12fps animation animated each frame. If you want to go from 24 to 30 fps... something will be lost or shifted on a timeline. Its obviously better to have final fps while you're drawing frames
Would it be possible for you to kindly create a video that carefully explains how to take something from Krita and import it into Blender, even with just a simple example? 🥺
Hey I have 3 videos about that topic based on different end goal. All of them feature Krita- Blender workflow. Check them out! th-cam.com/video/IOuBC1OeODc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3QpCJrzTVD2ddrvF th-cam.com/video/hM_uhazFOl0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YgAwflt1XhDiozYj th-cam.com/video/WmcmJqMQfbc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LtVfUgpvJFdY-ZkB
Hey very very cool video ! And very cool animation also. I have a question, for the paralax effect, have you create a big rock in 3D and then project on it the drawing you made in krita ?
Thanks! Basically its a rough 3d object with projected texture. The volume was done using AI depth generator with a bit of adjustments and cleanup. But you can also model it by hand too. I will cover this proceeds in details in my next video. Im currently working on the art that I'd use as an example.
@@PolyPaint Thank you for your answer ! Oh ok that's a very smart way to use AI, that make the job done and your art really stand out on top of it ! Well done. I'll try it out.

"Paint like you normally would", and it's the one thing I'm the worst at 😂
More seriously, thank you for these tips!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I didn't know Blender could animate an individual image like this.
I don't need to rely on AI anymore.
Awesome! Glad it helps!
Superb ❤
Thanks ❤️
Cool. Thanks btw nice concept study
Glad you liked it!
this is so good
aw, thanks!
Parallax is created by making mid ground rock and the frog separately from the background and having them on a decent distance, on top of that, parallax works only when the camera moves, so I made the camera to move forward in the animation
Painting in 2d is always faster and easier than in blender.
Having a right question is a big part of the solution.
just WOW!
I love this, wow! You have a full course? :)
Thanks! Not yet! Maybe one day I will have one
Oh my god?? that's so cool
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
please more grease pencil content!
Definitely!
amazing bro!!!!
Thanks bro! 🤜🤛
me gustaría mucho ver un tutorial como este pero en tiempo real. como no entiendo mucho el ingles, me es muy dificil entender lo que dices, te quedó realmente buena la animacion, gracias
Thanks! I may do something slower one day.
Awesome video...!
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome great work
Thank you so much 😀
@@PolyPaint Got it! Do you have any books or videos you can recommend to me for this? 😎
Very Inspiring!
Glad to hear that!
Cool tutorial! Waiting for new videos :)
Very soon!
Yo make a course or a tutorial or something! You teach well 🎉
One day I will do that. It has to be well designed tho. It will take time
Saw the word beginner and watched it.
Like making an object
pass in front of and behind layers, without adjusting/changing the hierarchy of the layers?
I have 2 videos about this process check them out:

Amazing stuff! I indeed subscribed. How would you transition to a different scene? I have some drawings on paper that I would like to scan and then create animated transactions. Maybe After Effects is better for this but I wanna try to do it in Blender.
There are some tools to convert images to Grease pencil in Blender.
GP is a vector-like tool, if you want to do raster animation its def better to go with other software for that.
Check NijiiGpen addon for blender, it can convert your black and white lineart to Grease pencil.
Here is the doc:
chsh2.github.io/nijigp/docs/functionality/io/vectorizing_images/
And the addon itself :

@@PolyPaint Thank you for the reply. You mean convert the drawing into vectors and them importing them into Blender to retouch/animate? Or you meant a plug-in/addon for Blender that will convert to vector?
@@soniferous This plugin can convert image to a grease pencil lineart and you can use it to finish your animation. I haven't tried this feature tho but this addon is amazing. I used it to cleanup my rough lineart and fill the whole animation almost automatically. it works like a charm
@@PolyPaint Thank you so much I will try it. Is called GP?
@@soniferous GP is short for Grease Pencil - 2d animation tool/object in blender. The addon i mentioned is called NijiGPen: Grease Pencil Add-on
Can we, for example, paint the concept in Photoshop and then transfer it to Blender to continue the animation?
Yeah, that’s a valid approach. Although if it’s 2d animation, you’d have to redo that in blender. I used photoshop to do a concept of a coloring and lighting before doing that in blender and it definitely saves time . I then copied the image in grease pencil and used color picker to colorize it directly from the concept art.
@@PolyPaint Thank you for the useful information, I really appreciate it!🙏❤️
Hey man just one question, once you have drawn all the frames, after that, GP allows you to configurate in the timeline 1/1 (24fps), 2/2(12fps) ?
Cheers.
Your videos great dont listen to these newbiews complaining
I appreciate that!
Would it be possible for you to kindly create a video that carefully explains how to take something from Krita and import it into Blender, even with just a simple example? 🥺
Hey I have 3 videos about that topic based on different end goal. All of them feature Krita- Blender workflow. Check them out!

this is all i needed to convince me to switch to blender.
Yay. Blender is awesome
Cool!!!!
Thanks!
how the hell you paint like that, that looks awesome! do you have a painting tutorial?
Thanks! I have some 2d art tutorials on my channel. I did lots of art studies etc to get on this level 😅
what in the freaking holy magick is this feature
im installing blender
Awesome!
