  • Hii!!!! So I was a bit nervous about doing this one, specifically the part about poking fun at the costumes, lol. But hopefully you guys know it's all in good fun and isn't directed towards the models themselves or how 'sexy' the costumes were!
    I hope you guys like these little mini-costume tutorials I did! It took waaaaayy tooo long to edit lol, RIP me and my eyeballs.
    I love you all!!

    Hiii! Just a side note about the "Bearded Lady" idea. It was not my intention to poke fun at trans women, so I'm sorry that it came off that way. I thought of it more as a drag look if anything, not necessarily 'HAHA LOOK A LADY WITH A BEARD, HOW FUNNY". I like to push the boundaries of gender, so I wanted to include her, but I totally understand the implications of the whole 'oddity' aspect and the history of it. The fact that I packaged it as a 'Halloween costume' certainly didn't help. I'm sorry and I love the trans community! I'll think more about my actions in the future ❤️

      I did think about the possible implications of costume when I saw it but I also think their is a big difference between dressing as Caitlin Jenner and dressing as a bearded lady. As someone within the queer community who identifies as genderqueer I love Halloween because it gives people the opportunity to blur with the lines of the gender binary in a way that many do not feel safe doing outside of this time. It seems to me that you have taken the time to consider the implications of the costume and I think it's rad that you like fudging gender roles.

    • @rhiannonm8132
      @rhiannonm8132 6 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      elle claire agree! I’m genderqueer too & I also saw how the costume could be problematic but I feel like Rachel is a sweetie & she meant no harm, and the fact that she addressed that some people saw it as problematic and apologized instead of ignoring or being defensive really made me happy 💖 I can totally see it being kind of a vintage-style drag thing, that’s actually super cool! As long as she didn’t mean it to be poking fun at or dressing as a trans person (which she didn’t)

      YES! Plus they are all cut above the knee.....women's dresses weren't above the knee in the 1920's! Unless you were a lady of ill repute, your skirt was below the knee, and even being cut below the knee was considered scandalous by the older generation!

      So true, this Halloween I intend on going to a party where the dress code is gangster and flapper and I'm pretty sure I'll see soooo many of those horrid and ridiculously expensive costumes but I already dug in my closet and created a pretty good outfit inspired on the era. It's not 100 % historically accurate but considering I'm not spending a dime on it I'm very proud of how it will turn out and on the plus side I know there won't be anyone else dressed like me 😀

    • @MadiBendy
      @MadiBendy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

  • @TheVelvetKitten
    @TheVelvetKitten 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    I put together a steam punk look an hour before the party I went to. Kinda leaning Victorian, but honestly I thrifted all of it because ummm it's what I wear usually. Maybe less accessories, but yeah man, those were my clothes. I won a couple small prizes! Which paid for my "costume" .... it is confusing. This time of year is my favorite to thrift cause people seem to think real genuine vintage is a "costume ..."

  • @themermaidstale5008

    That was fun and the ones you put together were really good. However, in the 50s, the felt poodle skirt was ubiquitous - I was 7 or 8 and had one, although mine was just the head of a poodle wearing a plaid beret. My sister, who was a teenager had a BEAUTIFUL blue felt circle skirt decorated with a felt leafy branch, some non-felt half acorns and a darling felt squirrel with a REAL squirrel tail. I so, so wish I had that skirt now - of course I wished it was mine, back then, too. I'm not too obsessed with that skirt, can you tell? TFS

    The other part of Halloween being near is people asking you if you are wearing a costume or going to Halloween party for basically the whole month of October! And you're there like nope....dress like this everyday! This year I'm doing a 1950's Hufflepuff student costume. My daughter is being Hermione, and I had things already in my wardrobe that would work, so I'm making a capelette that's black on the outside, lined with yellow, and has the Hufflepuff crest so it's reminiscent of school robes. I guess the plus side of dressing vintage is in a pinch you can just wear your regular clothes and people will be like "Wow! Great vintage lady costume!"

    Ever since I was 12, I’ve been making my own costumes for halloween, patching them together from my own clothes and stuff from goodwill. I like making costumes that I can wear later, like some cool pirate boots, tabi boots, cool suit trousers, that sort of thing. I get more bang for my buck that way, and I think that’s why I love costumes like the DIY ones in this vid; you can wear so many of these pieces just as regular clothes!

    Love these ideas! Especially the army girl and bearded lady. I dress vintage more often than not in daily life and wanted to keep the vintage vibe going but wanted to do something different than usual. So I decided on a *very modest*, rockabilly style tiki girl that I put together myself. I'm with you on the Halloween costumes at the stores; expensive and cheaply made. Not worth it. I've always had fun making my own costumes ever since I was young; it's so much fun going thrifting, or even going through my closet and seeing what I can come up with. 🎉🎃👻🎃👻🎉

    I loved this video. You has so many great ideas for costumes. I also love to go to thrift shops to find vintage inspired halloween costumes. My favorite one I ever put together was 1940's reporter complete with a fedora with a press pass in the brim and a vintage cammera that I borrowed from my grandpa. It was pretty easy to find an inexpensive men's suit and button up shirt that fit me (I also love men's wear on women). And it was way more comfortable than any of those "retro" costumes from the costume shop look. This video inspires me to want to try something like that again.

    We're going homemade this year...my daughter, Ebon is going as a Sorcerer, inspired by Prof. Snape. He's not exactly vintage, but his clothes look rather Victorian. I'm going to channel my inner Stevie Nicks...I rather have to owning a purple velvet top hat that I added black lace to...I even have plumes for it. Happy All Hallow's! Have fun and stay safe.

    For Dutch Comic con a while ago our showgroup had the theme The Walking Dead...I wear vintage inspired dresses daily and had one with some very bad memories so I went out on it, dirtying it up, cutting it up and it was both therapeutic and fun and I went as a "modern stepford housewife zombie" complete with apron and stained and torn yellow rubber gloves. People were terrified of me. It was awesome!

    When you showed that naughty costume with the cherries all over it, I instantly thought "Ewwww!" I am with you, girl! NOT THE CHERRIESSS! Out of all of the "Retro" Halloween costumes you modeled, my fave was the 1950s girl with the curled bangs, and the pony tail with scarf tied around it. I also liked the 1940s military look! Thanks for showing all of these great ideas! Stay safe, Rachel!! ~Janet in Canada

    Okay... I love cherry print. Not for any “vintage fashion” reason, I just.... love cherries. Cherries, cherry scents, and of course, the motif. But there is a weird over saturation in “vintage” inspired fashion and costumes. I wonder why that is.

    Even though I already know what I'm going to be for Halloween; I still really like these ideas! Also, question for y'all: If I'm going as Madeline (from the Madeline books etc.), then does that mean that I am dressing in a vintage look? The original book was published in 1939, but aside from being in Paris, I don't know exactly when it's set. The other books weren't published until the 60's (I think?) and then the movies based on the books were made in the 90's...but the costuming definitely wasn't the 90's. hmmm...what decade is Madeline?
