If I Could Only Have One Camera

  • I've been asked before if I could only have one camera, which would it be. Well, here's my answer and here's why!
The original APS-C Ricoh GR from 2013. It's an incredible camera, and that hasn't changed just because over a decade has past. It makes the perfect hiking, biking, landscape, family documenting camera when you don't want the extra gear and you just want something in your pocket. (Since I've had kids that has become an increasingly important feature ;) )
The star tracker I mentioned is the Omegon MiniTrack. I have the LX2 but seems that's not sold anymore: amzn.to/3VAzYGX

Because people are asking and I forgot to mention in the video: The star tracker I use is called the Omegon MiniTrack LX2. Apparently replaced with the LX3 and LX4 now. I put a link in the description if you're interested. The analog nature of it and how you set it up is way cool. I love it. Throw any camera on there that'll let you manually change the shutter speed 30+ seconds.

I always had a love/hate relationship with the Ricoh. I love to hate it! I always wanted to purchase a new or used one but the one thing that always held me back was Ricoh's unwillingness to respond and correct the complaints from their customers on the lens attracting dirt on the sensor which forced customers to send the camera into Ricoh for a very expensive repair. But I am glad to see that you are enjoying your Ricoh and having great luck with it. Best of luck in your photography journey.

The Olympus E-P5 has served me well for over 5 years as my side camera for work (travelling photographer, mostly in east/south-east Asia in rural/less travelled areas and towns) usually having a 20mm or 15mm f1.7 on a shoulder strap while my main body to still not stick out much is an E-M5.iii with a 75mm f1.8 for intimate portraits from a distance to keep from being a distraction and a G9+12-40mm f2.8 in my bag (I loaned my E-M1.iii to my partner to try MFT, and then gave it to them after). If OM-System could release a new E-P5, or even Panasonic a G100 (I actually like the body a lot even with the bigger 20mm f1.4, they just gimped it on purpose... no IBIS is a mystery for a "vlogging" camera), just updated internally to the same level of specs it had back in 2013 (1/8000 mechanical shutter if no solid e-shutter, toggle for mode/settings, 2 dials, tilt screen, better EVF for the G100, etc.) plus weather sealing, I'd preorder 2 of either right now.
Sadly, the E-P5's have doubled in asking price since I tried to buy a couple more as backups in case mine gets damaged/stolen while traveling. I do have an E-PL8 in my bag and my partner an E-PL7 that acts basically the same as my E-P5. They're a bit lower spec in some areas (1 dial, no toggle switch, 1/4000 mechanical shutter max) but are a still great little cameras for people not wanting the E-M10.ii spec wise for the most part, but are fine without a built-in EVF (all 3 I mentioned can use the fantastic Olympus EVF add-on) or just like the styling (the E-PL7 and E-PL8 are basically the same camera, just the 7 is a baby E-P5 in design and the 8 is another retro-ish design).

I definitely think you should give the Nikon Coolpix A a look too! I've been using it as a replacement GR (didn't want to shell out the money) and it offers a very similar experience. Tack sharp Nikon glass, 16mp APS-C sensor, and some pleasing enough noise, I feel comfy using it at ISO 4000! To top it off, it adds a manual focusing ring and there's a gorgeous silver version. I have one of said silver, and would be happy to lend it to ya if you ever wanted to take a look!

That's a really nice choice. For me, I'd never be able to choose - it's all about "best in slot", with 11 slots, spanning 35mm film, MF film, and digital. Oddly I do have a favorite lens, and it's an odd one - the Tamron 35-80mm F2.8-3.8 model "01A" macro zoom. Every bit as sharp as my Canon L 24-70, but so much more fun to use:) If forced to pick a pocket camera winner - the Fujifilm X70 gets my vote.

I typically don't take much stock in what others say about various bits of kit and gear but there was something super validating about hearing you say that about the GR. I don't have an OG GR but I do have a GRIII that I love to pieces. Honestly, when I'm on shoots, I'll often bring it out and convince my clients that I'm using it for "proofing" (which literally means nothing in any sense of the word) when I'm actually taking the photos I want with it. It sucks that, as you mentioned, many people don't take that camera seriously. It's because it doesn't have enough sticky-outy bits to be a "real camera" but I've taken pictures with it and have had everyone from the layman to the most seasoned photographer wonder "what did you capture that with" and when I mention the GRIII (and after they have a bit of a Google) they are quite dumbfounder and often wondering why they don't own one!

Yes, it's my favourite camera. I really don't see why one would pay more for the GR III. It was the first compact where I was amazed about the image quality, and the amount of options to adjust to your way of shooting.
It's true about the lens being sharp at f2.8. A lot of bigger packages won't even give you that sharpness. Because of the sharpness, you still can do a decent crop and still have enough of detail.

I love the Ricoh GR series. My "island camera" (assuming I had to pick a digital camera) would be my original first generation Fuji X100. I've never upgraded to a newer version, and I've made a "film recipe" that looks almost identical to my results on Kodak Double-X (my favourite black and white film). I shoot RAW+Jpeg and I'm actually often surprised at how often I end up loving the jpegs. I always backup and keep the RAWs of course, but I can't recommend those older 12-16mp sensors enough. I've always wanted to try a GR, as 28mm is my favourite focal length. All the best!

I know you threw in the ‘juggling children’ line at the end, but for me it was key. The true one handed shooting experience is a real boon when you have a kid hanging off you. My GRIIIx was the only thing I brought with me on a recent trip to SoCal/Disney, for that very reason (ok, I brought an Instax SQ6 as well). I’m still interested in the 28mm, since I used to have a GRIII as well (sold to finance a K3iii), so maybe an older one might be worth it.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one hand I couldn't agree more, but on the other I purchased a GR (I) which like many from this era turned out to be a dud. Ricoh GR's are NOT CHEAP cameras, and sourcing one of these beautiful, and arguably best GR's ever made (when the of course, work) is a highly stressful gamble. I've owned a GR, a GRIII and a GRD4 and after being really disappointed with the GRIII which I ended up selling, I kept my GRD4 which is like a GR but with a lower resolution sensor and slower to write to an SD. That being said, I have seen a tiny little external flash being made by some third party on ig which looks like it would be a great consolation prize but I really wish they kept that damn pop up flash in the camera lol

I have a "modern" GR III...sometimes in some occasion I don't distinguish GR files from the Leica Q2 files...just to say how good it is. I can complain just if I need to take a portrait with not so much light, so the f2.8 is too dark. But otherwise it's an incredible camera.

For digital it'd definitely be the GR (II though never had the original one) just how amazing it is to use in one hand makes it the perfect digital camera and yeah, the lens is i don't even know how they made it... it's so tiny.... for analog i'll choose my Bronica ETR though... portra800 in 645 just looks gorgeous and with Fuji atleast pretending like they're making 120 film again it's a dream

I buy used camera gear from a few different places, and you can find those links in my description. The adapter you have a few options. You can 3d print your own (and attach a cheap step up ring), you can buy third party adapters, or the original Ricoh adapter. You can find all that stuff on ebay or maybe aliexpress.

The GR series are very nice, but I find the single focal length too limiting. So I bought a GM1 with a couple of pancake lenses and use that instead. It requires a larger pocket, but then again I'm loathe to carry cameras in pockets, especially dust magnets like the GR.

I just picked up one of these (the plain black version) not even a month ago to replace my Ricoh GX100 that I EDC. It's brilliant. Truthfully, I can see myself getting rid of my other mirrorless cameras because I don't use them or feel the need to. But I won't ha ha.
I'm on the record for saying that if Ricoh makes a modern GX100/GX200, let's call it a GX300, that has an APS-C sensor, along with the GX# line's 24-72mm focal length, image stabilization, ability to add an EVF, and of course modern software, it will be the first camera I buy new, regardless of the price. Ricoh just does these compact cameras right.

Agreed! I was just looking at the Canon G1Xiii which is a compact APSC camera with a zoom lens. Would love to see Ricoh's take on something like that. Or, like you said, a smaller sensor GX300 would be great. I have the GX200 and love it. It'll make an appearance on this channel soon I hope.

Amazingly, my black one survived me skipping in a river and fully submerged (for just a second or two). I immediately took the battery out and let it dry on the bank of the river and felt super bummed. Then it turned on after and haven't had a problem since! But that would not be the norm at all. Kinda finicky cameras that seem to break easily.

They are quite different cameras, but generally yes I'd choose the GR over the MX1. But, the GR doesn't have the zoom the MX1 has, or the retro charm, so it all depends what you're going for.

Get an Olympus Pen, Pen Lite, or Pen Mini, and the lens it comes with. The oldest ones have the most film-like sensors and the newer ones better IBIS. IBIS means in-body image stabilization. That's right, the camera holds the sensor steady for you. Sensor is smaller than the GR sensor. Happy hunting.
You can also get a Sony NEX camera with whatever lens it comes with, there were only three kit lenses. Sensor is the same size as the GR sensor. Have fun!
