Just so you know the story that the man who hanged himself told Reiner Annie and Bertolt is the same story that Bertolt tells Eren when he asks about what happened when the titans attacked their "village" in season 1 during their training. They even used the image of the titan peeking through the window only with Bertolt instead of the old man who it actually happened to.

It's nice to see the parallel between the warrior trio and EMA.
Eren wasn't particularly good at anything like Reiner. But they both had drives and purposes that pushed them forward. That dedication was their strong point.
Armin was timid like Bertolt, taking more of a back seat when dangerous situations came about. Both of them didn't like confrontation.
Annie is like Mikasa where she doesn't seem to have attachments to anyone. But they both have that one person who causes them to lash out. For Annie, it's her father. For Mikasa it's Eren.
Inside of the wall and in Marley, they're all the same. Just people. Fighting on opposite sides of the war.

In the pre-timeskip Eren hated the entire world because they took away his freedom, but after seeing all the nuances and circumstances of both sides, all he wants is the end of this cyclical conflict that continually takes away the unalienable rights of his country. This was a great episode, but sadly they cut out a lot of scenes; specially during the RBA scenes in the walls:
-Reiner's mom has more scenes were she kinda manipulates Reiner into becoming a soldier so both of them can be honorable Marleyans
-Annie is way more involved in the mission, she screams to attract the titans to the walll before Berthold breaks it and they almost die in the process; it's way more caotic and last minute planned since they don't have Marcel
-They removed the scenes that explains their plan to retake the Founder; basically the king of the walls told everyone that he would destroy the world with the Wall Titans if someone attacked him, but that thread was a bluff (the whole vow to abandon war that all the royal family titans have that prevents them to do anything); and Marley goverment knew about that bluff (as Kruger who told Grisha in season 3), RBA were gonna find the king and steal the Founder easily (the king was probably gonna show himself so they could eat him without a fight), but since Grisha stole it first RBA were kinda lost and they spent 2 years infiltrated and finding out about the king puppet and that the true king was in hiding (is during this time that they talk to the men before he hangs himself, in the manga is mentioned that no one else survived from that men's village so RBA lied about being from there to fit in; funnily enough Berthold tells that men's story to Eren waaay back in season 1). After 2 years, RBA decide to join the army so they can infiltrate the military police and find the king to steal the Founder (they think that he is still alive somewhere; and they don't know if the vow of the king is 100% true or not, or if the king will release the wall titans or not; so they decide to keep a low profile).
-The Kenny scene is Annie investigating the military police to find the king, and after escaping Kenny RBA decide that they spend enought time infiltrated and that they would destroy the second wall to find out if the king would make a move or not.
Overall great episode, but the pacing is justt waay to fast

Levi isn’t an Asian, he’s German or Caucasian like Eren and Armin, so no, he won’t be recognized or look out of place.
    Also, Ackermans aren’t Asian...
They can be, like Mikasa is. But she isn’t Asian because she’s an Ackerman, she’s Asian because her mom was from the Oriental clan, her father was an Ackerman.
Basically, Ackerman’s aren’t recognizable from regular human beings except for their abilities.
Just correcting Nahid, because he thought Levi could be recognized.
Fun fact: Adding to Marketa’s statement, Hajime Isamaya got the idea of walled cities from his hometown which was a random town surrounded by endless forest.
Galliard is Porco and Marcel’s last name. Reiner asks Porco if he saw Marcel’s memory of how he died in episode 2 and Porco calls Marcel “My brother”
Also, lastly, the story that the man who killed himself told Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie, is the same story Bertholdt and Reiner told Eren and Armin when they were talking back in Season 1 Episode 3...

I think the point comes into focus more easily a little further along than where we the anime is now but if I were to summarize the meta narrative point of AoT it would be this: targeting an ethnic group for a collective crime is wrong and only leads to crimes against the innocent. The imagery being reminiscent of WWII era isn't happenstance, it's visually making a connection to the atrocities of the 20th century to help us understand that's the point.

Heads up for what you might have missed during the discussion
Reiner Braun is chosen as armoured titan. Porco Galliard is mad because is was supposed to be the next armoured titan. His brother Marcel Galliard says he is sorry while he tries to stop his brother from punching Reiner. After all it's his fault, he's apologizing to Reiner cause of what he did. Later during the mission Reiner tries to cheer them up cause they all were chosen. Marcel feels guilty and tells him the truth. Reiner not understanding why Marcel would apologize for making him the armored titan, a chosen one by Marley, stays static. Until Ymir after 60 years wakes up and tries to eat him. Marcel saves him.
After, when Annie blames Reiner for causing Marcel's death, Reiner still shocked but in need of this success in their mission states "If Marcel is dead, then Reiner is dead and I will be the new Marcel". The split personality disorder starts to sprout right at this moment. Reiner will eventually become everybody big brother, the reliable guy who everybody looks up to. Except it's not the real Reiner but the Marcel he created.
When Reiner destroys the second wall, he doesn't understand why Marcel apologized, saved him. Marcel clearly felt guilty. He was a lot more mature than Reiner. Because of him Reiner would go the this place full of devils and even if they succeed in their mission he would have only 13 years to live. He just save his brother but doomed his friend in the process.
During season 1, Berthold tells Eren about how the titan invading his village and how scared he was when he opened the window and saw a titan. This is not true, he stole this story from a man who also left three kids around their same age. The man later kills himself because of his guilt. This helps Reiner's group because they claim to be those 3 kids. This is eventually a bad move because Armin will very easily link the 3 of them as titans after Annie's titan capabilities are revealed.
Berthold is having a recurrent dream about that man who offed himself. He doesn't understand. Why would a devil who doesn't feel guilt even after abandoning 3 kids do that ?
Later, Annie is the only one heavily investigating the royal family. She reaches and tails Kenny. He vanished and grabbed her. She understands he is strong and very dangerous, she makes up a lie about him being her dad. Kenny doesn't buy it but she manages to flee hoping to never have to face this guys again. She wants to leave the island but Reiner's new plan is to breach the next wall leading to Trost event.

6:30 There was symbolism in this episode that can be overlooked: Annie killing the grasshopper. When Reiner and Bertholdt look over to see what Annie was kicking they see a mangled grasshopper. Grasshoppers in various cultures and religions represent different things, but most commonly are associated with "good luck" and fortune for the world. They either go through complete metamorphosis or incomplete metamorphosis and hatch from larvae, which is like an egg pod or cocoon. In religions such as the Bible, Grasshoppers are metaphors that symbolize the puniness of man when viewed from above. They also never jump backwards or sideways and are always moving/jumping forward, which some interpret as meaning to take a "leap of faith." How ironic is it that titans are huge creatures while humanity are puny in comparison when viewed above by Titans. In this case when Annie, Reiner, and Bert attack the walls the Eldians in the walls are like the grasshoppers who symbolize the puniness of man when viewed from above. Also how ironic is it that grasshoppers are meant as "good luck" and "leap of faith," but in this case, the leap forward of the Paradis Island Operation was a massive fail. How ironic is it that Annie, the one who killed and mangled the grasshopper is in a larvae type cocoon just like grasshoppers when they hatch. I doubt this scene was included trivially and I think Annie killing the grasshopper symbolized how terrible their luck and everything was from the start.

It is poetic that the story about an old Eldian man that hanged himself is included into Reiner's memories of the Island. This old man was so scared about the titans that he ran away and abandoned the three kids (basically leaving them to be eaten). But he was so crushed by the feeling of guilt that he hanged himself later on. Reiner did not understood it back then, but now, as he is also suffering from immense sense of guilt from his actions - he understands. And he was a second away from killing himself. Only his connection to the new kids gave him his "Door of Hope" (as the episode is called), the last chance and reason to keep living.
Also - Reiner, Bert and Annie used the story about this old man and his three kids as their cover story in season 1, when they explained where they were from (from a village overrun by titans).

So the best person to wield the colossal is the one who hesitates to use it, doesn't loses his cool to provocations and is afraid of the massive power it holds. Imagine someone like eren having colossal, he would probably end up taking down his own squad if he transforms out of a sudden in rage. I am very happy that you guys had the discussion about having a dangerous neighbour, which relates the plot of the anime to the current world.
As you guy pointed out, it is true that such a kind of an 'unpredictable' neighbour is scary, really really scary. But, I think THAT is the whole point; we do not know what is happening with others and we won't until we talk to them, communicate with them, understand each other. And when we really understand each other, it won't be a problem anymore. May it be a titan-shifter or a random stranger. That's exactly what happened with Reiner, by knowing them and understanding their situation he came to know that, they are no different from him. Still he had his reasons for doing what he did. But that's not the point, he understood them and hated himself for doing such things. That is why I think he felt that way at the thought of going back the island, thinking how he could show his face to his "FRIENDS" after all that shit he did.
