I used to repair these diesels. I didn't see the yellow glow plug light come on. Check the strip fuse located on the firewall behind the intake. When you put in new heat shields on the injectors, you can check the glow plug functionality. Make sure you use never seize on the injectors when you reinstall. You could have primed the system easier by pressurizing the return line(just a little). When you do the timing belt, you need to lock the cam in position, lock the pump sprocket in position and loosen the cam sprocket. The cam sprocket is a tapered fit. If you don't break the cam sprocket loose, you won't get proper timing(which is set with a dial indicator on the back of the pump). Repaired correctly and properly maintained, this engine will run another 200K.

I like the rattle of a diesel...Last company I worked for had a mix of Ford PowerStrokes & heavy duty Internationals. Once a week, I'd do a basic runthrough of the trucks & their systems - the Fords were o.k., but the Internationals were the ones I preferred: punch the clutch in, bring the rpms up, just barely slip the clutch(we had steep driveways, sorry) & those trucks were off to the races. I know the Jetta doesn't have that kind of "get up & go", but it could in the right hands :)

I drove such a 1600cc VW Diesel up to 420.000 km. Same injection pump, same injectors. Just regular maintenance (Air and fuel filter on schedule, motor oil and filter every 10.000 km). I gave it to a vegan friend who added an extra 60.000 km running on vegetable oil. At 480.000 km the car started to fall apart but the engine was still alive and well, consuming 1 liter of motor oil every 10.000 Km.

Im a little bit surprised how the breaks are not stuck, after 14 years. And also there are some Window Liquid inside the Tank. And of course, there is no problem to get an old VW start again after many Years, there are no useless Sensors, or many electric Stuff in this Old cars. Im happy u get it start again, and wish u have fun with this beauty. Greetings from Germany

Oh they were but with a quick drag they free’d up 😃 they were still dragging a little when we drove of, so will need a good brake rebuild. I know, it looked fresh even with the crack all the way down it 😂 Thanks!

I had a 1985 Jetta that was a gas 4 cylinder, stick. I paid $50 for it because the owner lose the keys to it. So when I got it the owner didn't think I could get it started. Little did he know, with a few wires cut an old ignition switch out of a lawn mower and some "polish ingenuity" we were running in about 10 minutes. It leaked oil well leaked is probably an understatement. I had to put a couple of quarts in it every few days, which was just used oil I had in a 5 gallon bucket which I kept in the trunk. Not to mention having to deal with the annoying oil light buzzer that stayed on all the time, I just turned the radio up while driving to drown it out 🤣. The main seal was gone in it. Plus it smoked, ah those were the good old days. This is a cool car, it's the same color as my old old!!!

Wow, really enjoyed that, bit of a walk down memory lane, had an ‘85’ Jetta, they were built like tanks and such a good drive with a cavernous trunk for such a small car. I’ve honestly seen cars on the road in worse condition than that is now. 👍🏻 awesome!!
