Doesn't drilling a hole through the branch damage the tree? I noticed on your site that you're an Arborist so I'm assuming the answer to my question is no since you care for trees for a living, but could you explain to a non-arborist why it's ok?
Also when you say "nearly-mainenance-free" are you referring to having to loosen and re-apply the hardware some years down the road due to growth?

Hi Bryan. Thanks for watching and commenting. Drilling a hole through the limb pierces the living layer of the tree in two places (top and bottom of the limb). That is less impact than tying a cinching knot around the limb, which over time can completely choke off the limb. The tree is very good at isolating the wound of a clean hole drilled straight through the limb - especially when it is only 5/8 inch in diameter. Having the bolt in the hole also prevents decay since insects are less likely to get in. The only maintenance needed on a swing installed with a through bolt and 5/8" polyester spliced rope is to keep an eye on the limb to make sure it stays healthy. The only friction will be metal on metal which adds to the life of the swing.

Hi! Great video! Fo you know how to hand a rope swing so that it swings level? The swing I have hung consists of a wooden seat w/ a rope attached to each side( 2 long ropes). My issue is the branch it is hung from is on a slight slant/ not level.

Hi, I love that install. I have a question about the anchor shackle. Could you just put the thimble on the eye bolt and splice your eye to the bolt?
The thimble won't pass through the eye bolt.
Ok I see, I put one up and persuaded the thimble over the eye and braided and eye over the thimble. Ill attach a picture of it.
Where did you get the pre-made rope? Was it a custom length?

Thanks, Joe. I use carbide tipped ship auger bits. For a 5/8 bolt I use an 11/16 drill bit.

The rope in this video is 3/4 Tenex Tec. I use 5/8 Tenex Tec for my double rope swings. You can buy Tenex Tec by the foot from most online arborist supplier such as Wesspur.com, Treestuff.com, and Sherrilltree.com. Have fun - good luck!

What's the name for the bolt and swing hooks you used for when I'm shopping for them?
That bolt is a forged should eye bolt. I'm not sure what the swing hooks are that you are referring to. If you contact me from my TH-cam About page I'll send you a list of the supplies I use and where I buy them.

Why would he needs to do all that. Is this for entire neighbor kids on the swing at one time? That hole will rot the bolt will fall right through and the kid will fall off anytime. And that brand is gone because it’s not going to heal around that. Just a simple rope over and some padding between the bark an rope is fine but nope u Gota pull out climbing harness and bs. Just a throw bag and sling rope over the tree but this guy want to show off the kids in the neighbors. I should gear up my climbing gear whenever I’m installing my kids swing too.
terrible. never damage your own tree. There's high strength straps you can use that will last a long long time and will do no damage to a your backyard tree.
do you think the straps would cause less damage if they were looped around the branch more than once? so they are moving less?
