  • I’ve visited Yellowstone and camped inside the park 15 times. Madison Campground inside the park is close to West Yellowstone and is my favorite place to camp when visiting Yellowstone. I typically book a year in advance using the private reservation system called Xanterra that Yellowstone uses for this and many campgrounds inside the park instead of recreation.gov. Video will show some clips from my many stays over the many years of Madison Campground so you can decide if it might work for you. What’s your favorite campground inside the park?

Thank you for giving insight into what makes Madison a great visit! What month did you visit? Reviews on Madison were iffy, but appeared to stem from overly high expectations. Wil watch your other videos. We are visiting for the first time at the beginning of June.

I’ve gone to Madison in late June, July, August and early Sept over the years. Madison is great in my opinion for location. There’s nothing fancy about camping in a old national park campground built decades ago. I’m not looking for that though. Location is key for me. You’re inside the park. 👍😁 Yet, It’s close to West Yellowstone if you need anything. The campground is in the heart of the thermal activities within the park. The river at camp is great as well. It can get chilly at night, so be prepared. Are you tenting it or RVing it?

Yeah. You want to stay inside the park to avoid the traffic leaving and entering each day. It’s grid lock.

I’m going in late August. And staying in Madison. How strict are their rangers with tent sizes?

Hmmm. How big is your tent? The campground hosts patrol the campground all the time. Most tents I’ve seen are not too big.

@@MoutainGuyAdventures we chose the option to take two 8x8 tents. One of the tents we have is that size. But our second tent we want to take is 10x9.

I'm in an almost identical situation, wondering this myself.

It would be worth calling them and see. It sort of depends on the site they assign.

@@jaylenevalenzuela1873 So I just went this last week and our tents were both about 10x9. The Rangers didn't seem to mind, they didn't even really measure our tents from as far as I can tell. I think that you should be fine, but have a backup plan just in case there is an overzealous ranger.
