Its depiction of the consequences of a nuclear war is haunting in its realism, and I would strongly support the production of an updated version, although preferably on a channel like HBO, where the consequences of such a conflict could be shown in more detail. I do, however, have to ask why you would link a Wikipedia article on corruption in a country currently being torn apart by a murderous narcissist whose entire MO relies on threatening nuclear Armaggedon to preserve his "right" to launch rockets into apartment buildings. The walls were double rows of concrete blocks with a foot of concrete between them. The ventilation was from a well work window air conditioning unit with a tattered filter. The claimed that the worthless filtration didn't matter because the window unit was mounted in a hole in the wall at the end of s short corridor and the entrance to the fallout shelter was at 90 degrees to the corridor. That way they would be safe because radiation cannot go around corners. I tried to tell them that "fallout" is millions of irradiated particles and that the wind can take them anywhere but then didn't listen.
Are they particles but they're electromagnetic waves so they might absorb on the exterior concrete. However I get your point they will attach to objects that can be carried by wind through vents and such so it would probably be best to have a ventilation system that is closed to the outside and with a warranty that is longer than many half lives lol.

That was the entire point - use these films to tell people that nuclear war and the aftermath were easily survivable, when the people making the films were well aware that a very large percentage of their audience would not survive a full scale exchange.
In later years I learned that fallout was related to the height that the bomb detonated . As the bombs got better detonating at higher altitudes caused farther range of destruction . This made fallout less of a problem because less debris was lifted into the atmosphere . In other words a nuclear blast at ground level would create the most fallout , but the least amount of damage . In 1959 pretty much all atomic testing was at ground level , so you were given the best knowledge that was available .
Fallout remains the worst danger, given the amount of people it can kill. A 1 MT TNT atomic bomb can be detonated kilometre above populated area and still suck stuff into a mushroom cloud, contaminating the burned dirt.

In the 40's and early 50's, the bomb yields were pretty low as they were strictly fission weapons, atomic bombs IOW, so for hardened targets they HAD to be detonated at ground level very close to the target to take it out. For cities, which are "soft targets", the detonation is much higher (like at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were detonated at about 1,500 feet or so in altitude) to maximize the range of destruction over the widest possible area. Once they invented high-yield thermonuclear hydrogen bombs, things changed a bit. The larger explosive yields meant these bombs could be detonated at 10,000-15,000 feet for maximum blast damage to soft targets, so little fallout was produced (as little fallout was produced by the atom bombing in Japan during the war). If the fireball touches the ground, there will be a lot of fallout produced. High yield hydrogen bombs detonated at ground level still produced high amounts of fallout due to dust and debris drawn into the fireball and coated with radioactive materials. BUT then they invented "staged weapons" which didn't just use a fission reaction to trigger a fusion reaction in nuclear fuel (a classic 2-stage weapon, called a "fission/fusion" weapon. It was discovered that the high energy neutrons from a fusion reaction could fission the normally unfissionable (by slow neutrons required for a fission weapon) U-238, so a "shell" of depleted uranium (U-238) was used to construct the bomb case, which greatly increased the power of the bomb through this "third stage", creating a 3-stage device or "fission/fusion/fission" bomb. Furthermore they discovered you could add ANOTHER layer of fusion fuel around that, and make the bomb more powerful still, into a 4-stage device, or "fission/fusion/fission/fusion" weapon. 3 and 4 stage weapons produce a LOT of fallout regardless of detonation altitude due to the fission of the U-238 tamper... also called the "fission fraction" of the bomb, or what percentage of the yield was created by fission. Some 3 stage bombs have up to around 55% or more of their yield derived from fission reactions, mostly in the depleted uranium tamper, so they are extremely "dirty" bombs. Bombs where only a small percentage of the yield comes from fast fission of the tamper, down around 5% or less, are called "clean" bombs, because they will produce little fallout or radioactive residue when detonated as an airburst. Back in the sixties being a first grader at my elementary school my teacher would have drills having us crawl under our desks in case of a nuclear explosion. One girl in my classroom would freak out and start crying when airplanes flew over the school. Also it was a common occurrence for fighter jets buzz my parents house.

Remember, if the mushroom cloud is covered by your thumb, you're safe from the initial blast, and have time to escape! If the cloud is any bigger than your thumb you might already be dead!
This is actually quite true. In HAZMAT training first responders are taught the thumbnail rule for general safety guidelines. If the object is covered by the thumb you are roughly a half mile away. In this case time is critical, so that's a good start.
Even though this is very dated, it's still shocking they depict these cartoon characters smiling while filling containers with water, etc. No one will be smiling. Depicting them with a concerned look would be much more appropriate.
I remember when I was a little kid in the early 90's I remember going places with my grandfather sometime i would see in peoples houses of what looked to me like a second basement underneath the 1st basement or what looked like Concrete walls in other people's basements that looked to be a divided room. You guys should watch the nuke war movie "Threads" as it really shines some light on what things will be like during and after an attack. If you live in a large city, near a military installation or in an area with any of the following: power plant, fuel depot/refinery, manufacturing, airport, rail yard, port or shipyard or food storage/ warehouses you won't have to worry as those ground bursts have got you covered!

I remember reading Civil Defense fallout shelter pamphlets a half century ago as a kid. All I remember is if you happen to be lucky enough to have a fallout shelter you can come out in two weeks. A few years back I read another book that said fallout shelters were more of a Civil Defense con to make the public feel like the surviving nuclear wasn't completely hopeless.
I wouldn't say they were a "con," per se - but in a lot of those times, they didn't have the sheer destructive power to annihilate the Earth 10 times over as they did later, and the full effects of the weapons weren't completely known. Even now there are still arguments and counter arguments against the idea of a nuclear winter or whether or not the Earth would ever be inhabitable again. I see it more as something any government would do. Who, in their right mind, would tell their populace "You're screwed. No, really. Kiss your collective backsides goodbye, because there's nothing you can do"?
Experts will tell us when to come out of shelters and resume normal tasks. That's pretty optimistic. What normal tasks would you perform after the world as you know it disappeared?

Even that is pretty small potatoes; civil defense and bomb shelters make sense when you’re talking about kiloton fission weapons, but when you’re talking about an all-out nuclear exchange with thousands of modern 2-10 megaton weapons, there’s basically no point. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but a nuclear war between major powers means the end of civilization. Some people will survive, but it’ll be a rough existence. Current US nuclear stockpile 5,500. Current Russian Federation stockpile 6,500. Due to nuclear military doctrine there are often multiple warheads per target. Targets include industry in every city in the country. Even if you miss the initial explosions by living somewhere very remote living off the land will be difficult due to the radioactive after effects. People need to understand these consequences so we can make informed decisions to avoid this kind of conflict.

MOST targets are designated for air burst because the air and the ground reflected shockwaves are coupled that way thus causing the most immediate damage. Fallout from an air burst is minimal. Hitting anything in D.C. or Moscow with a ground impact is a waste of a warhead, since leadership and strategic command will most likely be out of the area. Ground impacts will be almost all missile silos and launch control centers in the mid-west, almost all else will be communication infrastructure. If you live in a big city, getting hit or not will depend largely on the scenario of attack as killing population and destroying buildings isn't high on anyone's list of priorities. Industrial centers are usually fourth on the list.

Good advice for 1959. Air filtration and control of intake air are briefly mentioned but vitally important. Providing very clean super hepa filtered air with positive pressure inside the building to force out air so no dusty air gets in seems very important, as this radioactive dust can be nanoparticles or atoms themselves and one may have prolonged exposures. In emergency, one could bubble filtered intake air through water to remove even more of the radioactive dust for positive building pressure. I suppose when the major danger has passed but it's still dry outside, one could spray everything down with a fine mist to wash off vehicles, house exteriors, etc. to reduce further exposure..☢️🚿🌞

Chernobyl had any one nuke beat for sheer quantity of radioactivity. There were tons and tons and tons of radioactive material in the core. There are a couple pounds in a nuke.

Airburst nuclear weapons do not cause much fallout , ground burst, or those where the fireball touches down, are the dirtiest.
After Fukushima the US turned off radiation instruments on west coast. An employee at Hanford reservation returning from holiday set off radiation detectors. While on holiday he had eaten seafood caught off Pacific coast.

The UK nuclear industry has a long standing contract with independent monitoring bodies and their instruments detected increased radiation in grass and milk too.

My grandparents had root cellars and were prepared for just about anything because they lived through the Great Depression they canned dried and preserved just about everything. It had an old hand water pump inside the cellar and I would get in trouble for playing with LOL 😂 and a whipping.

I like how back in the 50s all educational videos were not only insightful but also encouraged optimism about situations and trust of experts.
That was the entire point - use these films to tell people that nuclear war and the aftermath were easily survivable, when the people making the films were well aware that a very large percentage of their audience would not survive a full scale exchange.
In later years I learned that fallout was related to the height that the bomb detonated . As the bombs got better detonating at higher altitudes caused farther range of destruction . This made fallout less of a problem because less debris was lifted into the atmosphere . In other words a nuclear blast at ground level would create the most fallout , but the least amount of damage . In 1959 pretty much all atomic testing was at ground level , so you were given the best knowledge that was available .
Fallout remains the worst danger, given the amount of people it can kill. A 1 MT TNT atomic bomb can be detonated kilometre above populated area and still suck stuff into a mushroom cloud, contaminating the burned dirt.
Partially true. In the 40's and early 50's, the bomb yields were pretty low as they were strictly fission weapons, atomic bombs IOW, so for hardened targets they HAD to be detonated at ground level very close to the target to take it out. For cities, which are "soft targets", the detonation is much higher (like at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were detonated at about 1,500 feet or so in altitude) to maximize the range of destruction over the widest possible area. Once they invented high-yield thermonuclear hydrogen bombs, things changed a bit. The larger explosive yields meant these bombs could be detonated at 10,000-15,000 feet for maximum blast damage to soft targets, so little fallout was produced (as little fallout was produced by the atom bombing in Japan during the war). If the fireball touches the ground, there will be a lot of fallout produced. High yield hydrogen bombs detonated at ground level still produced high amounts of fallout due to dust and debris drawn into the fireball and coated with radioactive materials.
BUT then they invented "staged weapons" which didn't just use a fission reaction to trigger a fusion reaction in nuclear fuel (a classic 2-stage weapon, called a "fission/fusion" weapon. It was discovered that the high energy neutrons from a fusion reaction could fission the normally unfissionable (by slow neutrons required for a fission weapon) U-238, so a "shell" of depleted uranium (U-238) was used to construct the bomb case, which greatly increased the power of the bomb through this "third stage", creating a 3-stage device or "fission/fusion/fission" bomb. Furthermore they discovered you could add ANOTHER layer of fusion fuel around that, and make the bomb more powerful still, into a 4-stage device, or "fission/fusion/fission/fusion" weapon. 3 and 4 stage weapons produce a LOT of fallout regardless of detonation altitude due to the fission of the U-238 tamper... also called the "fission fraction" of the bomb, or what percentage of the yield was created by fission. Some 3 stage bombs have up to around 55% or more of their yield derived from fission reactions, mostly in the depleted uranium tamper, so they are extremely "dirty" bombs. Bombs where only a small percentage of the yield comes from fast fission of the tamper, down around 5% or less, are called "clean" bombs, because they will produce little fallout or radioactive residue when detonated as an airburst. If a big volcano goes off in a big way, like Yellowstone, places as far away as south Dakota could be buried in 12 FEET of ash. Only 3 inches of ash is enough to completely bring to a halt all transportation. Any water the ash lands on is poisoned, and it'll act like an EMP knocking out the power grid.

You need a respirator with purple (NIOSH) filters, the same as used for asbestos . Interesting tidbit: Before 2000, many gas masks still used asbestos as the filtering medium. (I guess you can't use grandpa's souvenir WW2 gas mask).

Back in the sixties being a first grader at my elementary school my teacher would have drills having us crawl under our desks in case of a nuclear explosion. One girl in my classroom would freak out and start crying when airplanes flew over the school. Also it was a common occurrence for fighter jets buzz my parents house.

This is actually quite true. In HAZMAT training first responders are taught the thumbnail rule for general safety guidelines. If the object is covered by the thumb you are roughly a half mile away. In this case time is critical, so that's a good start.

I remember when I was a little kid in the early 90's I remember going places with my grandfather sometime i would see in peoples houses of what looked to me like a second basement underneath the 1st basement or what looked like Concrete walls in other people's basements that looked to be a divided room. I once asked what are these? He said bomb shelters. Always watching the Coyote alway trying to catch the road runner on TV so I did have an idea of what bombs were but I didn't here the Phrase nuclear bomb till about 96.

I remember the Cuban Missile crisis. Our school used to have drills where we would all march a mile or so to a certain location where all the children would board a train and would be taken to who knows where. My father a veteran of WWII told us 4 kids if it happens to leave run away if we have to and go home. We had prepped. He said the trains and train stations would be sitting ducks and we would be safer all together at home.
There was a notable lack of stocking RAD-X and RADAWAY in the bunker.

If you live in a large city, near a military installation or in an area with any of the following: power plant, fuel depot/refinery, manufacturing, airport, rail yard, port or shipyard or food storage/ warehouses you won't have to worry as those ground bursts have got you covered!

I remember reading Civil Defense fallout shelter pamphlets a half century ago as a kid. All I remember is if you happen to be lucky enough to have a fallout shelter you can come out in two weeks. A few years back I read another book that said fallout shelters were more of a Civil Defense con to make the public feel like the surviving nuclear wasn't completely hopeless.
Not a con at all. A good shelter unless you are at ground zero will save your life.
I wouldn't say they were a "con," per se - but in a lot of those times, they didn't have the sheer destructive power to annihilate the Earth 10 times over as they did later, and the full effects of the weapons weren't completely known. Even now there are still arguments and counter arguments against the idea of a nuclear winter or whether or not the Earth would ever be inhabitable again. I see it more as something any government would do. Who, in their right mind, would tell their populace "You're screwed. No, really. Kiss your collective backsides goodbye, because there's nothing you can do"?
Our school had a large basement rated as a fallout shelter but they still made us do the drop in the hallways twice a week.

@@branchcovidian2001 That’s kind of the opposite of my understanding. Fallout may not be so bad if you can avoid exposure for the first week or so, but the topsoil will be ruined. Even that is pretty small potatoes; civil defense and bomb shelters make sense when you’re talking about kiloton fission weapons, but when you’re talking about an all-out nuclear exchange with thousands of modern 2-10 megaton weapons, there’s basically no point. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but a nuclear war between major powers means the end of civilization. Some people will survive, but it’ll be a rough existence. Current US nuclear stockpile 5,500. Current Russian Federation stockpile 6,500. Due to nuclear military doctrine there are often multiple warheads per target. Targets include industry in every city in the country. Even if you miss the initial explosions by living somewhere very remote living off the land will be difficult due to the radioactive after effects. People need to understand these consequences so we can make informed decisions to avoid this kind of conflict.
@@junkdriver42 The danger from fallout is highest for about two weeks. It decreases exponentially. MOST targets are designated for air burst because the air and the ground reflected shockwaves are coupled that way thus causing the most immediate damage. Fallout from an air burst is minimal. Hitting anything in D.C. or Moscow with a ground impact is a waste of a warhead, since leadership and strategic command will most likely be out of the area. Ground impacts will be almost all missile silos and launch control centers in the mid-west, almost all else will be communication infrastructure. If you live in a big city, getting hit or not will depend largely on the scenario of attack as killing population and destroying buildings isn't high on anyone's list of priorities. Industrial centers are usually fourth on the list.

I worked in Portsmouth Naval Base in the 1980's and we did nuclear attack exercise drills in the tower block I worked in and we had to go to the designated muster station which just happened to be in structurally the weakest part of the building on a floor about halfway up said tower block with a large window with a view of said naval base & dockyard not that that would have made any difference of course because a direct nuclear strike on Portsmouth Dockyard would have totally annihilated everything for miles around! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Good advice for 1959. Air filtration and control of intake air are briefly mentioned but vitally important. Providing very clean super hepa filtered air with positive pressure inside the building to force out air so no dusty air gets in seems very important, as this radioactive dust can be nanoparticles or atoms themselves and one may have prolonged exposures. In emergency, one could bubble filtered intake air through water to remove even more of the radioactive dust for positive building pressure. I suppose when the major danger has passed but it's still dry outside, one could spray everything down with a fine mist to wash off vehicles, house exteriors, etc. to reduce further exposure..☢️🚿🌞

Chernobyl had any one nuke beat for sheer quantity of radioactivity. There were tons and tons and tons of radioactive material in the core. There are a couple pounds in a nuke.
@@LOLHAMMER45678 That's very true. But fallout doesn't come from the nuclear material itself, it almost all comes from material being drawn into the fireball and scattered widely. Airburst nuclear weapons do not cause much fallout , ground burst, or those where the fireball touches down, are the dirtiest.
After Fukushima the US turned off radiation instruments on west coast. An employee at Hanford reservation returning from holiday set off radiation detectors. While on holiday he had eaten seafood caught off Pacific coast.
@@sixoffive Yes, I don't doubt this. In the UK we became aware of the Chernobyl explosion when the detectors at our own nuclear power stations sounded the alarm.. The UK nuclear industry has a long standing contract with independent monitoring bodies and their instruments detected increased radiation in grass and milk too.
This was released the year I was born. I just think of all the poor bastards who lived within the fallout zones of the nuclear tests here in the US.

My grandparents had root cellars and were prepared for just about anything because they lived through the Great Depression they canned dried and preserved just about everything. It had an old hand water pump inside the cellar and I would get in trouble for playing with LOL 😂 and a whipping.

Protection against gamma radiation requires a thick, dense barrier. Sandbags are a relatively cheap and easy way to create such a barrier
