Wishing you all a happy, safe and prosperous 2023! I hope you enjoyed this peaceful morning with the goats and I. Let me know if you'd like more of this casual format in the future and what else would you like to see from us at the Ramshackle Ranch? Pascale
very happy new year to you guys too. The thing is, as much as this'll sound like I'm buttering you guys up, we like all the different styles of vids you release, from Toolmaking Time with Troy, to projects, to food-making (esp. preserves), to these slice of life vids. They're all good coz you guys are good folk and aren't interested in clickbait or selling out - you're doing your own thing your own way and it's great. All the best to both of you and all the pets, and the livestock too, from me and my fiancée too. Hope 2023 brings you everything you need.
As your life is so radically different from mine, or that of most of your viewers, practically any aspect of your day that you share with us is not just a pleasure to watch, but educational as well. The care for our environment you showed while sailing has now extended without surprise to the land. It’s a beautiful thing.
Thank you Pascale - and I am sure you speak for the 'lump in the bed', Troy 🙂 If everyone on the planet followed the example set by you two - in their life choices, their attitudes and their respect for nature - the world would possibly stand a chance of surviving the ignorance, negligence and ugliness of the human 'condition'. May 2023 bring you everything you deserve. More richness, more love, more happiness. . . . and, whilst I'm about it, I wish for the instant demise of warmongers, bullies and cretins. Luv ya!
So glad that I got an recommendation to watch your channel 😊 Me and my husband have also started a new life with a farm. We moved from Sweden to Slovenia and we have two geese, three pigs and 16 chucks and two roosters and last but not the least, our princess a sphinx called Vigdis. It’s so lovely to see both of you learning and working at your farm. Looking forward to next episode 🫶🏻😃 Best regards from 🇸🇮
Looking good! I would recommend a teat dip at night when you lock up the kids, and again when you are washing the udder, I throw one in after I’m finished milking, it will help prevent mastitis and greatly reduce the bacteria count in the milk.
You can use your cheddar culture to make feta. I've aged feta 12 months. It was delicious. I removed it from the brine and vacuumed bagged it. 10°C is a good temp to age it. Lower temps can cause a little bitterness in cheese.
Enjoyed your video. I've been raising goats for 40+ years. Its normal for does that are nursing to get fussy at the end of milking, they are trying to hang on to some for the kids.
When I was using the same technique with my goats (separating the kids at night) some of my milkers would act the same way, they would let me get only so much milk before they decided it was enough! They also may not let down their milk because they want to feed their kids, I had one nanny reach around the head stanchion and bite me lol
This is the first time that Paski's "cooking" didn't make me hungry. Except for the cheese. Many years ago, while in university, I worked at a research laboratory taking care of the animals. We had some pigmy goats that were the funniest animals to watch. I don't think I ever saw them walk from one side of the yard to the other. They always bounced like Mable was doing around 3:10.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought I would comment that in 20 years of milking goats I never milked from the back. You demonstrated well that sometimes there are practical reasons to do so. When I started milking I was too small to reach around the legs. By the time I was 18 the family was milking 20 twice a day. The name was Q Herd back then.
Have you tried making Haloumi cheese. Growing up in a Cyprus mountain village, all the goat milk would be taken to a different family in rotation so there would be enough to make a batch. Quantity and hydrometer were used to record and calculate individual contribution of milk and settled with exchange of Haloumi cheese at the end of the milking season. Your videos are a wonderful window to a childhood lifestyle I really miss.
Pascale, thanks for a great lesson on milking your goats. It is nice to see how much the goats have calmed down and are now used to you milking them. They are calm because you are calm and love your goats. Blessings to you.
I think the goats sensed your nervousness. Once you were more comfortable, so were they. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I hope your time with your family during the holidays was enjoyed. Happy 2023! Thank you for sharing.
I love that you guys have so much GOAT in your life!! TOLD YOU SO!!! But you were so right- the pigs were much more scalable in clearing land on a per animal basis!!!!
Love this channel and that opening scene where somebody is snoozing right on through. LOL Thanks for the peaceful episode. It was different and will add a little variety in between the busy, busy episodes.
I love milking goats. We had a Nubian and a Saanen when I was younger, and we used to milk them. The Saanen looked like your Hugo, so every time I see him, it makes me smile. We sometimes had to ‘tie’ one of the goats hind legs to the fence while milking so she didn’t put her hoof in the bucket, but I also remember milking at ground level, and resting my head in the crook of her belly/hind leg to stop them kicking too. Not sure I could sit on my haunches to milk like that anymore, I like your set-up. Hugo may need to be separated from the girls sooner than later😬
Happy new year guys!! You're doing so well Pascale. Talk to those gorgeous creatures...your voice will calm them. Not sure I agree with your 'ergonomic position there. I would have thought twisting around like that wouldnt do your back much good. I know when I used to milk the cow (early morning is really special and peaceful especially in winter on a cold foggy morning hugging that warm pot.), I used to face the cow on a stool so much easier..maybe Troy could rig you a stool and put a bracket (possibly with some padding or an old cushion fixed on, behind the goats so they feel secure. You're looking a bit tired kiddo, take it easy and look after yourself and both have an awesome year. Cheers from Bridgy 🥰..btw Mabel is so cute..
Do you ever have nostalgia for the simplicity of sailing life? I know the satisfaction of spending time with animals but you it have that in the wild too.
I've seen other people with problem goats during milking they have ropes with a loop that they put over the rear hooves and that stops them kicking the milk pail.
Sorry, last Tuesday was 37 in Corio, and I had a cupla cheeky customers saying they were glad it was me, out there delivering pizza to them not the other way round. Sorry Pasky, glad it you and not me gettin up that early to milk goats. My Dad's Mum had a young goat with horns, in her back area with the chooks in the early 60s, we didn't like each other. The lamb loved everybody. Hugo [?] was alot like Gran's goat. That Rooster needs to be taught Dawn is his chance to crow about what he looks after. trying to find a cupla chooks for me, although theres a lot of cat in the neighbourhood, including Shiffa. Although still really liking the lifestyle. Nice work m8s. Thanks m8s hope you had a good New Year.
Another amazing video from my favorite down under farmers. I always wondered where goat milk came from. 😊 Thanks for putting another bright spot in my week.
I've watched from the beginning, (when Troy was not really on board, lol) Have downloaded your book, Pascale, Thank you!). Love the real life, informal style. The inventive methods to solve problems using found materials, preserving your food stuffs, its all interesting to your audience. Be well and have a fantastic 2023
Been away in Vietnam for a week, got back late last night to peaceful Perth. So nice to get home and have 2 of your videos I havn't seen yet!!!!!!!!!!!! so great thank you,
Good morning!!!! And Happy New Year!!! Fantastic this precise activity. 5 AM??😃 But it gives the chance to see how magic I life at this time. Thank you.
Happy New Year Pascale .. you know what.. I think that 'format' (if that's the right word) of a shorter video showing a specific item with a bit of a chat is a really good idea. I liked it anyway. ... So funny to see that little kid jumping around (3:10) with hooves and knees seemingly bigger than proportionally would look normal to non-goats .. good stuff. Cheers. (also good to see that Troy has the right idea of lying in while you get up :), but I'm sure that's not really the case).
Happy New New guys A very relaxing video to watch thank you For posting it. I will tell you one thing you have a fantastic Stud goat he is big and looking fantastic. As long as his crown jewels work fine I would think he would command quite a high stud rate
We did wether Hugo so he could remain with the herd and not become a complete menace. He has responded well to training and may become a useful herd leader in future. He is becoming quite the handsome fellow though.
Very informative Pasky..my daughter would love your cheese..being city dwellers she buys hers in bulk and yes it stinks the fridge up if she forgets the lid. So when are the Jersey cows coming...Guernseys if J's are too dear..love to see you do a few wheels of great dairy cheese. Somewhere down the line..
@@FreeRangeLiving hahaha you have pigs now, turn em lose in the pasture....So its summer right..Maybe its time for Troy to shine again. Chainsaw maint a biggy..sharpening..tension. tunes..Lots have no idea cause they take the lawn mowers to specialists. Oh and while I'm here hows the cider? and have you guys thought of Ginger beer yet? both kinds..non and rocket fuel..
I love Goats. They are very special animals. However, you may some difficulty with Hugo. Lol. Having a buck on the property, intact, means no one safe. Do not even look at a buck when he is in rut. No matter....he will want and try for anything that moves. Anything or Anyone! Sorta joking there.... maybe Hugo could be herd "chester". BTW you are a natural with the animals!
Hugo has been wethered so he doesn't become a complete menace. The application of the rubber ring seemed to upset us more than him. He never missed a beat and only had one day of not being playful.
@@FreeRangeLiving Weather you are beating into the wind and waves or farming in west Australia I really enjoy watching you two endure. I even started making my own pork breakfast sausage. I can now pronounce every ingredient. Thanks.
Blackberries are a rampant weed in Australia, taking over national parks and private farms and bush blocks alike. They grow so fast they block out the native plants and the thorns make whole tracts of land impassable unless you bulldoze it. Goat control is a great option!

Nice Video, nearly time to consider Hugo's future I think.
His fate was sealed with a rubber ring though you wouldn't know anything was amiss with him. He barely took a day off from playing about.

Finally a solution🐐 to the "I will dominate and take over your entire yard" berry🫐 bushes. And don't get me started about mint🌱
Haha, yes mint has some attitude
Happy New Year to you both. Love the laid back presentation. Can you explain why you scorched the milking woodwork?
Just to add interest to the piece and distract from the very basic construction. It was as much an experiment as anything. We like the effect.
happy New Year. i hope that one goat at the end wasn't trying to 'f' its mother :-))
I adore feta cheese, how did you make your cheese cave?

Fresh feta sounds amazing! Hope a cheese making video is in the plans!
Hope you both have a wonderful New Year's!
Take good care!
We will definitely whip up a cheesy episode just for you! Milking goats has led to some incredible food experiments that are surprisingly simple.
You should decant every now and again so if they do put their hooves into the pot less is spoilt 😉
Yes, we do that after a frustrating experience in the early days...
will be BRRR this winter. ;-)
It looks like it from here. Good luck over there

What am I missing here? Why would you not want blackberry bushes. Blackberries are a miracle of nature…
Some are good but not out of control. The one shading the chook coup gets to remain unmolested but the others are available as prime goat fodder.
