*Oh the memories this song brings to mind. My wife called the radio station back in the 90s she requested & dedicated this song to me. Happy to report we are STILL together today. She has shaken the tree a few times since but each time a hand full of rotten apples keep tumbling down. I don't know why she expects a different result each time!* 🤠

This song has been at the top of my playlist for nearly 30 years

Back when Country music was Country music...I miss this time.
Had the privilege of seeing Chicks With Hits in concert a few days ago. Terri Clark, Suzy Bogguss, and Pam Tillis. If you love 90s country as much as I do, I highly recommend seeing this concert. It was amazing. 100% acoustic which was awesome.

If you think about what the song writer is saying is sad really; The lover she's messing with doesn't really care about her and of course when and ONLY when her lover feels like he's got something to lose he'll turn on his charm. Sugar is nefarious for being a rush/a high and eventually it crashes.
Maybe thats me but listening to the lyrics its how it made me feel. A lady shouldn't have to shake her man to give her the love that she deserves.

I think you’re exactly right! I do not think it is as “dirty” as some interpret it as. But, there is a difference in feeling what the words are saying versus simply hearing the words.

So true that was country music in the 90s. I don't like today's country at all. Not pop country. I have fallen out of country. Bring back the greatest group ever. ALABAMA saw them 5 times in concert. No one comes close to them. Randy the grestest

I am pretty lucky since I listened to her father Mel when I was growing up (my uncle had an 8 track collection) and then Pam as an adult in my thirties.

Every single time, from whatever source, whatever device, I'd hear her singing "Shake The Sugar Tree", ALL the time that we were together. Out on a date? this song would be playing. In the truck? This song would be playing. Hangin out with each other, at each other's house? This song would be playing. EVERYWHERE the two of us were together, this song would be playing.
SO, I said, THAT'S IT! THIS IS OUR SONG! Every now 'n then I'll hear this song, like "Back to the Future", I'm propelled back 30 bittersweet years. Time bittersweetly moves on.
