I remember this well and the players believe it or not I was 9 years old never missed a game with our Dad. Hes gone now but we always appreciated the love of sports he instilled in us. When i see these games it brings me back to my youth a simpler time and a sport that was played with passion for the love of the game not money. The reward was pulling on that old green jersey and marching onto the field to represent your country and your people. No greater honor exists in sport win lose or draw.

The old Ireland v Scotland games were always tough battles with no quarter asked for or given. This is a great example.

I’m struggling here with the concept that this is 43 years ago! And as a full grown adult, I watched this match live! 😅. Rugby has progressed and also regressed since then.

Regressed mostly. All it took was professionalism and making normal looking men into muscular giants.

I agree too many players built like tanks, this always reminds me of how I played in the 60s, 70s and early 80s. It was a better game then

Wish we could go back to the good ol' schoolboy rugby. Still a great game, just not the same anymore

I remember when the wind used to blow down the ground it made it very difficult kicking the ball into the wind.
I really like the new stadium with the glass stand at one end that cuts out the wind.

Back in the days when a scrum was quick and exciting. The ball from set pieces was so scrappy that it was hardly an advantage to win it.

Great to see the late Paul McNaughton at 12, in one of his last games for Ireland.

The way they engaged in the scrums - no waste of time. Just hook in and press. Amazing.

How did TV allow the brown ball?? I remember that McDonnell & Patterson were two great prospects for Ireland but their careers were cut short with injuries, on lions tour. What a garry own by Campbel!l. Irvine was a great full back. Scot had a good team. Other thing to note was the speed of scrum formation, today's game?!

so different to today, scrums, taking back into the 22,kicking dead from restart, staying on the pitch at half time, rugby balls that weighed a ton when wet.I was playing rugby in the royal navy when this was played.

Ah I love this I started to play grade 1981 so round same time scrums just get on with it line out no committee meeting . More actual play time compared to now Tops no walking bill bords and dont look like soccer shirts . Also basically same 30 people start the game is there at the end bar injuries Also if some one lies on ball or tries to stop it coming out of a maul little tap dancing will make them to think twice

Oranges on the pitch at half time, pitch like a potato field

  • @ldfreitas9437

Tony Ward got dropped, unfortunately. Renwick: one of the best ever. The first try: most pitches that wouldn't happen today, with those extra short in-goals, now called try zones (like end zones?) Even in parks where there IS room to have a deeper in-goal, some signage for adverts has to be put up to take up the space behind the dead ball line.

    • @SupremeBros2012

Renwick and Irvine would have been fantastic for the French team with their ingenuity
