As Will Carling said himself. That was a legendary Scottish side we were up against. David Sole, Derek White, John Jeffries, The Hastings Brothers, Gary Armstrong, Craig Chalmers and not forgetting the winning British Lions Captain Finley Calder. What a Team.

I was at this match. It was the most exciting and dramatic match I have ever attended. The commitment of both teams, but especially the Scots, was something to behold. And they were amateurs! They were not playing for pay cheques, they were playing for their country. I have not seen a professional match that comes anywhere near it.

You know what I miss from the old days? Apart from the mud, the long grass, the cotton shirts, the collars tucked in, its the wind. The cold February wind. Stadia these days are enclosed, even have roofs on. The wind whistling round and players looking freezing, reminds me of my playing days on some desolate northern pitch at the back of a council estate.

I am English, but people forget that of this Scotland starting XV, eight had been selected for the Lions tour of Australia in the summer of 1989, and in fact 6 of them had started at least one test match v the Aussies. They were a good team full of high class players.

I remember turning out for my club 3rdXV in 1993 against Stewarts Melville 3s. Who's on the park but bloody Finlay Calder! A test series winning Lions captain! I can tell you he was made of different stuff, just steel and sinew. To tackle him head-on was close to suicide.

Please could someone find the Wales v Scotland 1982 l would love to see that game in full again it was a cracking game of rugby and the tries were incredible, that day Scotland were absolutely cockahoop and of course in those days Scotland v Wales games were exciting to watch and of course the late Bill McLaren made them even more exciting. The first rugby match I ever sat through on TV, as a fresh faced 12 year old English lad. We only had to turn up to win it ... which is precisely why we didn't win it! Constantly got turned over ... yes the Scots had the rub of the green and a couple of obscene lucky bounces (not least the Stanger try), but they made that luck and were deserving of it. We just didn't have the fire in our belly that the Scots had in theirs. God alone knows why I ever wanted to watch another game after this ...

    • @YARROWS9

That was some English team Pete. They were up against a Scottish side that was a fluke in having all those good players, playing at the same time. Never to be repeated. Finley Calder taking out Mick the Munch Skinner. It doesn't come better than that.

Thanks for posting this I've been trying to find this game on-line for a long time! It's actually the first time I've watched this game since it originally aired on St. Paddy's day in 1990. Grew up listening to the late Bill McClaren calling rugby on BBC TV, sadly missed these days :-( Even though I knew the final score I was still biting my nails at the end just I was biting my nails at the end as a 16 year old in 1990 watching this live :-) Hopefully Scotland can get a decent team together to challenge for the Grand Slam again :-)

Reading a book about the game called The Grudge. V good book which highlights the poisonous atmosphere created by the papers in Scotland. Eng players went out to warm up and spat at. Spat at again on the way back. Imagine if that had happened at Twickenham. We'd never hear the end of it. Eng had played superb rugby until then but were out thought.

Everyone in Scotland was sick and tired of the English arrogance stirred up by the English press and BBC. The atmosphere in Edinburgh that weekend was unbelievable. There was just this nervous but steely determination to wipe that smug grin off WIll Carlings face. But once it was all said and done there was a great night had by one and all.

Credit to the Scots for a spirited team effort but it's disgusting how lenient he was on them for all those collapsed scrums. England should have had a penalty try just after half an hour. Even the Scottish try came from a scrum that should have been on the halfway line.
