I played trombone behind the Dells many times in the DC area in the 70's. What a great experience and one the reasons I became so 'smitten' with the music business ... good old days for sure!
I am from South Africa, I grew up in a broken family, many a times we had nothing to eat for a day at least. We went to school under enormous difficult circumstances. What saw us through life, school and our spiritual life was the music albums of The Mighty Dells, we played LP,s by then. The DELLS are unmatched!!!!! I remember the last time I saw them in concert. They sat on stools but they saaaaaaang their asses off!!!!! I even got a response to an email I sent Marvin about the staying power of the group members. May they REST IN PEACE🙏🏾

The name you mentioned out of the group that rarely gets his just do, is Levi Stubbs who was definitely underrated. Now that also was a beautiful baritone voice. I wasn't really into the Bernadettes' and Sugar Pie Honey Bunchs'. But when it came to Just Ask the Lonely and MacArthur Park and some others,it was a wrap for me with Levi. But Marvin Junior was definitely the man.
I love this interview but the background noise makes it hard to hear him. The Dells got some much deserved respect in the 90's but still it's not the full respect they should have been given. Their name should be honored as the singing group highest standard. No other group can sound like them. Amazing!

I've always loved so much of their recorded output and that album they did with Gamble and Huff really was outstanding, from memory" somebody's gotta move" was another example of Marvin's great lead voice.
