THAT'S why when I had MY shop, I had a MINIMUM charge of $35 that was due when the set was DROPPED off for repair! THEN, if it cost more to fix, they'd have to pay the balance when they pick it up AND I had signs all over the shop that said "Items left over 30 days from date of repair WILL BE SOLD NO EXCEPTIONS"!!
I agree. But he is too kind, (like me), to go that far... And that is why I went out of the electronics repair business in the late 1980's. Plus the influx of cheap TV's and VCR's from China. Made it cheaper to just buy a new one than repair it. Everything is disposable today, even automobiles.
It is cheap when you consider the time spent repairing it, but at the same time you could get a working unit for a fraction of the cost at some thrift store or even for free from craigslist or similar.
Most techs get over 75$/hour, and would not even look at something for 30$. Many want a minimum of one hour. There are very few TV techs in our county, and they aren't cheap. The TV tech has gone the way of the shoe repairman or piano tuner, few and far between, and you have to pay, not because of what it's worth, but for it's value to YOU. I called an old TV repairman (probably dead now) about a tube set, and he said he can do it, and rarely does anymore. But young repair men know IC chip sockets, not tube sockets, ICs have pins, not tubes, what are "tubes"??? You can get CRT TV sets at junk stores a dime a dozen, not worth fixing, most are under 10$, and they work fine. But junk stores want a lot more for flat screen crap that probably has issues. The TV repairman makes his bread and butter on tablets that needs power jacks fixed on the PCB, people will get their ipad or iphone fixed... that is unless Apple comes out with a new model icrap, than the old ipod (i stands for idiot) gets dumped.
If you told me that the bill was $30 I think I would be very happy. Also a record player for $35 is a very good price. People don't have the decency to respond. Yea, I'd block them, too. I hate GoldScar and LG products.
Amen to your rant man. I am in the same situation as you, people want their electronics fixed for free, but they love to spend their moneys on new phones, cars, cigars etc. At least I don't smoke or drink. That's why I'm able to save of and at least try to get myself some decent stuff. Many "friends" that were visiting me, were just calling me to borrow stuff to them. It really gotten to the point of admitting that I have no one that I can call a real friend or to rely on them when I need to. So my advice is to stay away from strange caracters, only do business with people that you really trust most and don't brag about being able to fix stuff, always play stupid is a good idea most of the times. I really laugh my arse off when I see someone that comes to me to fix something that will you cost them about 2-3$, they say, hey it doesn't worth it. Then I see them going to a service guy that will charge them 30$ just to just a freaking CPU compound paste. That reminds me, I've got the take a memory stick from someone. Most of this comment was addressed to me. Cheers :)
I had a service I use to provide in my business. People would call up and ask how it turned out and then never show up to pay me when they learned things did not turn out. Eventually I made everyone pay in advance so if nothing turned out, at least my ass was covered for all the time involved!
2:55 - How exactly do you think new HD flat screen TVs ship adjusted from the factory? Bright and blue as all hell! And folks just accept that as the "new HD" picture. 🤦♂️ Bryan I calibrate TVs and my biggest challenge isn't a technical one, it exists behind the remote: I can't convince set owners that this store mode is not even remotely accurate nor is it good to leave the display in such mode. They're like, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
I had an old floor model tv from 1989 and I found an rca RF modulater for clearance price of $ 3.00 dollars and played a DVD player just fine hope you see this and reply back to me soon thanks
I'm surprised these things are worth anything at all to be honest. Here in the UK I have a Samsung 20" TV of similar vintage, in perfect working order, and I can't give the damn thing away. Even a 10 year old Panasonic 36" CRT set, originally retailing at near $2000, won't go for more than $30 -- if you're lucky. So a 19" Goldstar with a failing CRT? You'd have to pay to get it taken away here :(
I get angry when the scrappers go out and cut the cords off of electronics or scrap them. It's like, you take a perfectly working TV or VCR or whatnot and ruin it for the 2 cents of copper you can get off the power cord? I see people scrapping the metals and such out of electronics and I always think "if that thing worked, they could get a lot more money for it". Not much money, but still. End rant. I actually haven't had a hard time selling TV's around here, I still manage to sell them for $15 to $20, which isn't too bad considering I get most of them for free.
This is one of those cases in which an assessment of the customer is as important as an assessment of the equipment requiring repair, if they smell like beer, or cigarettes, or refer, or appear unable or unwilling to bathe, be like Nancy Reagan and just say NO. That being said I don't think I would waste my time on anymore BPC television sets for repairs, if you can get one free and do some minor things to spruce it for resale, maybe. I don't know why someone would even think of bringing a 90s-00s BPC TV set in for repair, especially a 19'' one of a cheap brand, I see sets like that dumped all the time and most of them still work, if I wanted to save them I could have easily have filled up a garage full of them by now. Unfortunately electronics are considered disposable these days, in fact they were getting that way 20 years ago. Now they plan obsolescence by playing around with how many jacks are at the back of the TV, and of what kind, or what sort of outputs a DVD/Blueray player has. My mother bought a Sony Blueray player about two years back and we quickly found out that it only had a digital output, no RF out, no video out, nor audio out, so we could not use it with the current TV, even though it was a 2005 model, so back it went to the store and in went an older but still working DVD player. So today it will be an HDMI, a year from now they will cook up some new scheme so your old HDMI compatible TV won't work with whatever new gadgets you buy. I'm not a big fan of government intervention but this B.S has to be stopped, screw the energy efficiency ratings how about the energy and resources wasted by turning perfectly good electronics into scrap through rackets like this?
I really like the 1993 Toshiba TV the one who has the RF input only. I used to do that by hook them up with the RF Modulator to get the video from the DVD, game console, etc.
Bryan, Now watch that ole blood pressure, my friend. Nowadays, our society's deadbeats are everywhere one looks. Don't let them get to you one iota. They're not worth the bother. Sooooooooooo...Don't worry - Be happy. LOL Regards, John
With the amount of 90s CRT sets kicking around for next nothing, I guess there's really no point putting up with the inconvenience of one with no AV IN when you can probably find one with.
I learned very quickly to charge up front before I would except a set. Like you I found people expected you to fix it for next to nothing or they would dump it leaving you the task to get rid of it. The worst of it was they would pay a Plummer or Electrician without question even though you and I are highly trained in our profession. So, not only did I charge when the item was brought in, I made sure the tag stated thirty days to pick up or it was sold or dumped. Most people learned very quickly I meant business and make no apology for it.
I know the feeling all too well - especially people who make offers on items for sale, but don't bother responding. Then there are the people who buy something and arrange for me to deliver it, but aren't decent enough to let me know that they won't be home in time.
I don't deliver things anymore. If they want it, they can come over here and get it. If they are too afraid that I might rape and kill them; then, they need to stay at home.
radiotvphononut I've decided to avoid deliveries now too, as I hate wasting the time and petrol to drive into town only to find out that the buyer isn't home. Like you said, if they want it, they can come get it. Otherwise I'll drop it off at the thrift shop next time I drive into town.
i have a 29 inch samsung crt tv, had a problem with the picture. it turns blue the entire screen sometimes pink and green. and you can watch whats on the display but the color is bad. is that a case for rejuvinating my tv? thanks for the response nice fix on that tv btw.
You brought up a good point. i used to run a TV repair shop in the early 90's & decided to get out of it. it seems that most people nowadays don't think that the labor & time involved with doing repairs is not worth anything. As for these Asian made pieces of garbage, i don't waste any time on them, they go directly to the trash. when i was doing repair work, the customer often ask what was the best set to buy, i would just tell them to find a old Zenith Chromacolor set. i would also tell them that none of the new sets were worth buying. they would not listen. Oh, Well.
Toshiba did make some really nice CRT TV's, I have a flat tube 20" one from about 1998 which was a higher-end model, I use it as a monitor for old computers video games, still works great and it's really heavy for a small TV.
Is that the Parkway record label on the 45 in the background? Keep up the great work. There will always be dead beats as long as they get something for nothing. Thank you Washington - Republicans and Democrats.
hey where can i get a picture tube tester like that and how would i use one i have a few old tube type tvs id love to test the crts on then i have a few modern mid 80s-90s tvs id like so see how much life is in them and come on gee 30 bucks for the tv repair i woulda had the picture tube redone and paid the 30 bucks for maybe another year outta the tv.
I know exactly how you feel about the digital signals. There are garbage. I hate that thing else that knows and I wish we still had analog. Now you have to have a crappy converter box or spend hundreds of dollars on it or get a new TV. Just like you when you showed your other video about not wanting a flat screen I don't want to flat screen TV. I have an old Fisher TV that is working just fine they're all control is because it's from 1993 no longer working and I had to get a replacement but the CRT inside is just fine and like you said you can get replacement parts for it unlike my flat screen in my living room which was given to me as a Christmas gift where you can't find parking at all you're looking up to go on Amazon and find a replacement remote control for it. I hate that there's no signal in my bedroom I get almost nothing and have to put the amplifier on at my grandmother's house in Puerto Rico her bedroom TV is the best signal at all and yellow two TVs hardly get anything. I don't know why are my uncle broke his leg he did not go up on the roof and split the signal to all three TVs it would have been better and if I could have done it myself I would have.
$30 out the door? Cripes, you're actually doing him a favor. Most techs would charge way more than that on the labor alone. That "customer" you're dealing with is a cheapskate.
Jesus man,, I wish you lived close to me here in Florida,,, I would be over joyed to get my tv’s fixed for so dam cheap!!!! 30 dollars?? They couldn’t come up with that? Wtf....with your skills,, in a area like mine... you would be making a hell of a lot more on repairs than that my friend...
its like come on 30 bucks is lot cheaper then a new tv. id be happy with an old crt if i could get it for 10bucks i dont watch the tv enough to really care abou an hd picture as long as i can watch my shows im happy.
Honestly rf only sets annoy me. These televisions support external composite in but the oem simply didn't add the jacks and disabled it in firmware. It is possible to hijack the rf composite line to add composite, but for something that should of been there in the first place its annoying.
$100 is mostly the max I would want to spend if I really wanted to get it fixed . I am not good at some repairs, too complicated for me. Heck if you lived close by, I'd happily give you some business. I got some items I would like repaired. ( No, I am not rich.)
Agreed, 30 bucks is extremely reasonable. I know what you mean about people wanting something for nothing, that's a big part of why I pretty much got out of doing tech work on computers, you get the damn thing going and then charge the person 30 or 40 bucks and they bitch. $30 to fix a TV is real cheap. I remember paying over $100 to fix one of mine a short time ago.
I agree. But he is too kind, (like me), to go that far... And that is why I went out of the electronics repair business in the late 1980's. Plus the influx of cheap TV's and VCR's from China. Made it cheaper to just buy a new one than repair it. Everything is disposable today, even automobiles.
+metalmoto I fixed my own LCD tv for $50.00

Do like the lawyers do and demand a retainer up front. If the repair costs less, then refund the difference.
You can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter- an expression that comes to mind!
hahahaha!!! "Ho money." I laughed for a long time when you said that.
$30.00 is a great deal compared to a shop a shop would charge $50.00

He can’t pay $30??? The minimum charge for any work here in Atlanta is $150! You are too nice, I wish you were in our area

$30!! What else did he want for that sort of money, 'executive relief'?
Cant believe they moaned about $30, like your time has no value. You should introduce it to a sledge hammer and send them a link to the video.
Wgat good would that do? Ain't the TV's fault. Better solution: Introduce the sledgehammer's to the idiot's foot!

That blue gun shorted twice haha.
i love your posts... do you fix the old rca 45 record players....have a nice day...

Do you ever fix vcrs beta and dvd players?

If The Picture Tube Dosent Work Good
It'll Be Good For Parts For A Another Stereo.

Brian when it comes to $30.00 I know how much work you spend on TV's and the parts labor
Ahh jj cruz, the famous cap replacer made famous by shango.
I was going to guess $25 charge.
$30 to troubleshoot to component level and replace several parts.....LOL......most of us wouldn't even plug in our soldering irons for that.
When you repair niche products like CRT TVs that are a low demand, $30 is DIRT cheap.
This type of work is not cheap anymore.
Hey there. Do you still do Facebook. If so, I'd like to be one of your friends on Facebookk :)
@shango066 I don't get it :(
Probably an inside joke. :)
If You Want That Speaker Reconed Let Shango 066 To Recone It For You.
What you should do is put a VGA input in it and maybe even RGB. It's pretty easy to do with any TV made after like 1990 (anything with an onscreen display). That will dramatically increase the value of the TV. It allows excellent picture quality from games and computers.
Polish a turd... RTPN you crack me up.
Goldstar is LG and killed the Zenith brand.
I have been wanting a 1960's record player so if you have one from the 1969's then I will buy it from you and I only have $20.00and I mite go up to $30.0 and I will also buy any body's else's so if any body has one then let me know asap. Thanks
$30.00 is a cheap price for repair.
Lol I would have bought the toshiba with no jacks
would you sell him the tv for 15 dollars if he come in lol
I can't figure out why he'd even bring it to you for repairs.....it's a throwaway piece of garbage. It's the CRT equivalent of today's modern tv's, no quality whatsoever. And yeah, Zenith 90's era picture tubes.....my parents bought a brand new Zenith during that time, and the picture tube was defective right out of the box.....had a lovely purple picture.
A good set to watch Barney on. "I love you, you love me, let's make a fam-i-ly"
kinda weired that they complain for u making they tv look better
around here they are a dime a dozzen junk why would you waste your time
