      I was just thinking that Gothenburg is becoming a swedish mini New York. I must say of all the major cities in Sweden Gothenburg is the one that is most suitable for high rise buildings.

      @@swedenvideos8912 They obviously have more sense in Stockholm. The cost per unit of floor area rises sharply with the increasing height of a building. What is the point of these buildings? It is not as if there is a shortage of space in and around Gothenburg. Uddevalla in particular is a huge development opportunity, and Borås could also expand, as could Mölnlycke, all of which have quite good transport links. There are other potential growth points along the railway towards Strömstad and Halmstad.

      @@physiocrat7143 Why do you think people wait for over 12 years just to be able to rent an apartment in downtown Gothenburg? Because most people do not wish to live in smaller cities. Urbanization is a factor, and Sweden has to adapt.

      @@shiguCS High buildings have nothing to do with urbanisation. They are anti-urban and entirely unsuitable for family living. They do not even achieve high residential densities due to the amount of empty space that has to be left around them. They are also incredibly expensive to build and poor value for money, in terms of cost per square metre. They are also environmentally unfriendly due to the amount of energy, mostly releasing carbon dioxide, needed to build them. Rich pickings for the big developers, though.
      All of this was known 50 years ago. Why are our planners and politicians making the same mistake again?

      @@shiguCS Waiting lists are what you get when prices are controlled at sub-market levels. There would still be a twelve year waiting list if the numbers of houses and flats was doubled or tripled. We should stop running Soviet economic policies. Russia gave them up in 1989. Time we did the same.

    The last thing we need, with our cold and windy climate. The embodied energy and the energy footprint of these buildings is horrendous. How will people be got out when there is a fire? What happens when the electricity goes off? Madness.

      You do realize that Gothenburg is rapidly expanding and needs new buildings? If you don't build skyscrapers, you would need a LOT more land to fill the same space. It would be madness if you didn't build. You're not in the year 1800, building tall has become the solution to many problems.

    • @physiocrat7143
      @physiocrat7143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shiguCS Expansion is a policy decision. Skyscrapers as being built in Gothenburg do not save space. They also put pressure on roads and other infrastructure due to the concentration of traffic they generate. There is plenty of room within Gothenburg to put this floor space, in buildings not more than six storeys. Given the Covid revolution, it is questionable whether there will even be the same requirement for office space in the future. In the UK, office buildings are being increasingly turned into residential, for which they are not really suitable. Buildings of the kind going up in Gothenburg are being demolished even in London.
      There is space for expansion towards Kungälv, Nödinge, south of Mölndal, around Frölunda, at either end of the Älvsbro - all of which have reasonable road, tram or train connections. Beyond Gothenburg, many of the smaller towns could usefully be expanded. The potential exists to develop a complete new city at Uddevalla, which enjoys excellent rail connections and is a port as well. Concentrating growth into Gothenburg is an unbalanced policy which is storing up trouble for the future as the infrastructure will not be able to cope. It needs to stop, and quickly. The city is being ruined as what made it such an attractive place is being destroyed.
