      Ahahah B1M is forgiven ❤ …as all of us Nordic people look and sound the same to outsiders.
      We’re basically the East Asians of white people.
      I think our countries are each so individually insignificant and collectively homogenous that it’s not realistic to assume people will treat us as any other than a collective in their minds, if they even give us that much.
      Our current national borders and separate national identities are all so arbitrary. We’ve been trading sovereignty of each other backwards and forwards through various “Kingdoms of X & Y” combinations for well over a thousand years. That we’ve landed as the current separate nations (…at least, for now) is mostly a fluke of timing. But the rest of the world wouldn’t notice or care if all or some of us joined together. Or split further. Or… whatever.
      Bring an unlabelled world map when you go travelling internationally and ask locals that you meet if they can point out your country on the map. It’s an eye-opening experience. And I’m not talking about doing this in the third world either.
      anyway…

    While I have no technical skills or interest in the world of construction, I AM interested in design, architecture, industrial planning, commercial projects, development, etc.
    You don't just show us construction projects, but you look at the ways in which construction intersects with other fields and the technology that enables these sorts of megaprojects. For example, I'm a keen follower of nuclear fusion development because of my physics studies, so it was great to watch your video on ITER! Thanks for making these videos so insightful and varied, yet captivating even for folks who have little to no experience in construction.

    Gothenburg is definitely a rapidly growing city. I was there 3 years ago and so many new towers have popped up all over the city since then. Karlatornet, which is going to be 245 meters tall, will be the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia. It looks very impressive already! However, there are also downsides to these rapid developments. It looks like the city is selling its soul to investors. Many newly constructed buildings really feel out of place and have very little respect for the surrounding areas. Scandic Gothenburg Central really is an eyesore. An ugly glass box that can't be unseen. The same counts for Hotel Draken, which is located next to the beautiful old parts of Haga. Hotel Draken and the surrounding newly constructed towers really don't fit there. Hotel Draken feels a bit like Gothenburg's own version of Tour Montparnasse. The city really needs to step up the game and focus building a coherent, good looking city. Some experts need to oversee all the big projects and make sure they fit in better. Quality over quantity. The same counts for newly constructed apartments, many of them look really bland and cheap. Gothenburg can do so much better, really! Don't get me wrong: I do love Gothenburg!

      I agree, they're investing in the wrong things and destroying the city's soul to turn it into an "event" city with ego-driven projects. I laughed when the video called it a "sustainable" city. When so much is invested in industry, car infrastructure, glass buildings (the most unsustainable kind of buildings there is) etc, there is no sustainability in mind. Could do so much better indeed.

    Beeing from Gothemburg this rebuilding phase do inpact the entire political landscape of the city.
    Road tolls + new trains (västlänken) + a decade of construction + The skyscraper (karlatornet) + the cancelled idea of a cable railway over the river + the replacement of the old city bridge with 4 lanes + the now proposed tunnel under the river. I do love to see that they did correctly identify the shift from port city to more of a general industry hub.

      i believe any city wich doesnt have a skyscraper yet shouldnt build any.
      the minute you build one they spread like wildfire and take up all the good looking parts of the city.
      they remove the views and the sun from the people, they create wind tunels and they never lower the rent prices anywhere they are built, its just a way for developers to especulate and for criminals to launder money with real estate.

    The biggest issue in Gothenburg for those living in the suburbs is commuting using the public transport. Although Swedish public transport is really good as it reaches every corner imaginable, if you want to get anywhere in the city it takes you anywhere between 50 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes depending on the time. It is a huge problem which needs to be solved because 2 hours everyday for transportation is not acceptable. For the majority of people who use cars, we are taxed both when entering the city and going back to the suburbs which can be aroud 5USD daily at rush times. That itself combined with the hike in price of fuel and 3 USD per hour parking fees makes it super expensive to be able to commute to college or work on a car. Either you sacrifice 2 hours of your life everyday or pay your way out of it if you have enough money. This is the dirty reality which is being overlooked. Also the new metro system being built will only facilitate a few areas which still leaves majority of the suburbs only connected through the current slow transport system. Also the public transport one way ticket costs 4USD which is a total joke. For someone which an average Gothenburg salary of 22k USD, this type of expense is terrible and even worse for the students.

    I'm always frustrated by companies saying a development is 100% renewable / 100% solar powered without addressing power when the sun isn't shining.
    Unless they have, or their grid has, enough storage, they're likely also using gas generation at those times but selling excess solar for offsets. Here in Western Australia, we're the world's largest island grid and massive solar uptake is a grid stability issue, so exporting excess solar to claim you're 100% renewable is pushing the problem elsewhere.
    But maybe they have more batteries.

      @SweBeach2023 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We really don't use gas or coal in Sweden, so I suspect selling excess solar produced in the daytime and buying hydropower in the evenings and during the winter is the way they reach their "100 renewable" goal.

      @@SweBeach2023 Thank you for the info - yep, that would do it!
      Wish it worked that way here. We don't have hydro in WA (yet) - low on both hills and water!
      I assume the Swedish grid has an interconnection with other Nordic countries but they're probably similarly powered.

    • @jattikuukunen
      @jattikuukunen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YhanaSL Norway and Sweden both have lots of hydropower because of the mountains, so they export lots in the area. Sweden also has nuclear and wind. Finland does not have as much hydro so there's a more even distribution of nuclear, wind, hydro, and fossil fuels in CHP plants (and significant imports from Sweden, but no longer from Russia).

    Grew up in Gothenburg. It was very cool to see this video and recognize landmarks from my childhood - Fiskekyrkan at 0:21, the Poseidon statue at 7:00-7:05, and Ullevi stadium behind the new building - and not transformed beyond recognition by skyscrapers and urban decay. But I do remember the insane scramble to move into an apartment that was large enough for two, and later three kids - from a studio apartment where my parents slept on a foldout couch in the living room and my sister and I shared a bunkbed in the hallway, to a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom place near Avenyen and the old opera house. A great city for walking in.

    Im from Stockholm originally but recently lived in Gothenburg for 10 years, had a great time. However Ive visited Gothenburg a few times since and the vibe is really off, city center is full of aggressive migrants (especially at night), not the city I remember and loved when I sadly moved home. Stockholm is much better in that regard because we have our "stadsdelar" that isn’t as connected to the city center as the cramped one in Gothenburg.
    I guess these areas in Stockholm are the last bastion against the destructive and failed migration policy that virtue signaling politicians has forced us to live with without any thought of the consequences. The downfall is just sad with no solution in sight.
    I will still always have a special place for Gothenburg in my heart. A big / medium city with a small town feeling / mentality.
    The sweet spot.

    Has anyone incorporated a gravity battery into a building to save extra solar energy for use at night? Even as a green gimmick that might be worth doing for the LEED credit. Though that would probably make tuning the building for seismic and wind load an interesting challenge.

      City is a mess and maybe all of this construction will pay off by 2050 but we'll have to wait until that time comes.

      @@krystiandobrzanski9745 and the construction is not sustainable. by 2050 those glass buildings and all the solar and ac systems will have to be repaired, most likely replaced. meanwhile the historic buildings will still be functional for centuries, but no one calls them "sustainable". only high tech stuff can be sustainable acording to leed, that why people should be suspicious
